DURHAM — Durham Board of
Education taxpayers forked out about
$2,400 for secondary school administrators
to attend a professional development con-
ference in San Antonio, Texas Feb. 3 to 6.
The annual conference, organized by the
National Association of Secondary
School Principals, was attended by
eight principals and vice -principals
from the board, according to
spokesman Mary Brown.
"Administrators are allowed to
spend to a maximum of $300 each for
professional development and the rest
comes out of their own pockets," she notes.
Ms. Brown explains the professional
development allowance is part of a col-
lective bargaining agreement between
the board and its secondary school
administrators.
Despite the cost to taxpayers, Ms.
Brown says the conference is worth
every penny.
"This conference is massive and it's

If marks were being handed out for the mock dis-
aster exercise carried out in Durham Region this past
week, it wouldn't exactly have been an A+.
Taking a large view, the mock event (staged to
determine how well the region's emergency services
would react to a nuclear disaster) went as expected.
Schools were evacuated, central depots were set up to
process `evacuees' and the agencies in charge of
operations during a disaster sprang into action.
But those taking part in the exercise -- and those
who monitored it -- had the benefit of seeing some of
the areas that require work if there is to be success in
saving lives during a real disaster.
And that underscores the need for Thursday's
exercise. Perhaps the most notable failure of the day,
as explained by Durham Region chairman 6ary
Herrema, was the breakdown in communication
between levels of government participating in the
event.
If, for instance, there was to be a full core melt-
down at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station or
at its sister plant in Clarington, the communication
link would arguably be the most crucial element of
any evacuation plan.
Effectively, this exercise was both a success and a
failure. It failed in a key area that would be required
in a real emergency, but it succeeded in pinpointing
the weak link that must be fixed.
It also succeeded in providing politicians and
emergency response agencies with a clear picture of
the organization, commitment and co-operation need-
ed to save lives if the worst were to happen.
Because the next time, it may have to work more
effectively.

gets OK to hire 11
education assistants
DURHAM -- The Durham Board
of Education's budget committee has
agreed to hire 11 new education assis-
tants immediately at a cost of around
$250.000.
The move marks the first time new
education assistants have been hired
since the board placed a cap on taking
on new helpers for special needs stu-
dents back in 1992.
According to Brian Cain, superin-
tendent of education in charge of
finance, staff have also been directed
to come up with a formula which
would see more education assistants
hired as the school board grows.
"The school board wants staff to
come back with a recommendation to
increase the overall complement" of
education assistants, he said.
Mr. Cain said the recommendation
to hire 11 new education assistants
means there will have to be budget
reductions in other areas.

The budget committee move fol-
lows a school board decision last
week to remove the cap on the hiring
of education assistants.
Bev Freedman, superintendent of
education in charge of programs, said
last week the hiring cap, coupled with
student growth over the last few
years, has resulted in "severe stress
(being) placed on our ability to effec-
tively implement and support pro-
grams for special needs students."
Student enrolment increased by
more than six per cent from 1992 to
1994, but the number of identified
special -education students jumped by
more than 22 per cent over the same
period.
One of the ways the school board
supports appropriate special -educa-
tion programs is through the use of
education assistants, who support
classroom teachers and academic -
resource teachers as school programs
are modified to meet the identified
needs of exceptional students.

Founder Jim Darlow hopes the league

has grown in leaps and bounds else-

past two years, and promote it in a safe,

"In-line hockey is becoming such an
up-and-coming sport. It's all over North

watch. It's even faster that ice hockey

Darlow.
Seeing the increase in the number of

reirs your vehicle
whiFee you're on the GO
Canadian Tire Pickering has started weekday
auto repairs for local GO train commuters.
Commuters just leave their vehicles at the
Canadian Tire Kiosk located at the Pickering
GO station in the morning. An attendant then
drives the vehicle to Canadian Tire for repairs.
A shuttle service meets the owners at the GO
station in the evening and takes them to pick
up their vehicle.
This service has been available since January
16th and will be tested over the next six
months.
According to Randy Conium of Canadian Tire
Automotive, Home Office, "this service is the
first of its kind for our industry. It allows
convenience with peace of mind repairs from
Canadian Tire".
Durham and in Scarborough in January -
Before the league even holds its fust
registration session on Feb. 18, it
already has 30 players signed up and
it's received dozens of enquiries.
"We were quite surprised to get 30
signed up already. We didn't think peo-
ple would fill in (the registration form
on the brochure) and mail it in. It shows
there's a lot of interest. Definitely,
there's a lot of interest out there," says
Darlow.
Running a hockey league is second
nature to Darlow, as he's been involved
with the Generals Men's Hockey
League for the past several years.
"It was a good fit because we were
already running the men's hockey
league and we had the experience to do
this league," be says.
The in-line roller hockey league will
use most rules that are in place in ice
hockey, with a couple of exceptions
designed to make the game faster. The
two blue lines are eliminated and no
offsidut will be called. Players will use
the same equipment as ice hockey
except. of course, for the slates.
However, the league will employ a
unique rule to keep it both fun and
interesting for the players. During the
firstof the schedule, players will
rotate from team to team, competing
with and against all the other partia-
pants in their division.
Darlow notes the rule — which is
employed by the Generals Men's ice
Hockey League — encourages players
to meet new friends. And, the policy
also encourages less aggressiveness
from the players, thus cutting down on
1enaltie&
After eight games, a draft will be held
to set the teams for the remainder of the
season.
Darlow's hoping in-line roller hockey
will appeal to ice hockey players who
want to continue playing a form of the
sport in the off-season. Ile also feels the
sport will attract nori-bockey llayers-
"It really opens the door to ]rids who
don't know bow to ice skate. The door
is wide open. They can put on roller

walk or the road daily or weekly to

DURHAM - It's time for

stay up a little later. Every par-
ent has been in this kind of situ-
ation and wonders how to con-

Durham Board of Education
psychometrist Mary Fitzgerald
offered parents strategies for
reducing the hassles that come
with raising children during a
workshop at Cedardale Public
School in Oshawa on
Wednesday. Psychometry is the
measurement and testing of
mental states and processes.
Ms. Fitzgerald asked parents
to imagine hanging a tape
recorder arotaid their necks dur-
ing the day. She ventured that if
the tape was played back the
parent would hear a series of
commands like "Clean your
room," "Hurry up.- "Comb
your hair," "Slop fighting," and

"Using a constant barrage of
commands teaches kids to tune
us out," Ms. Fitzgerald told par-
ents. "In many ways it pro-
motes defiance rather than
coopeation „
She said there are ways of
promoting cooperation and
avoiding daily battles. One
strategy is setting clear rules
and expectations for children.
"I think sometimes we
assume children know what
they should and shouldn't be
doing," Ms. Fitzgerald said.
It's also important everyone
in the family be involved in
drafting three or four general
rules.
"So it's not just parents
deciding what the rules of the
house are, and dictating those
rules," Ms. Fitzgerald said.
Establishing routines for chil-
dren also helps bring about
good behavior. Ms. Fitzgerald
says routines for a child are litre
s
the walls of a house, providing
dimetision and structure to their
lives. These routines can be
geared to each individual child
and allow for some flexibility.
"Routines need to be flexi-
ble, but not flexible to the
extent that they are no longer
routines," she said.
Providing choices whenever
possible will make children
cooperate more, Ms. Fitzgerald
said. Sometimes the choice can
be as simple as laying out two
outfits to wear and letting the
child choose one, she added.
"They learn to make some
decisions on their own, so they
feel like they're not always
being told," she said.
Other advice from Ms.
Fitzgerald included: choosing
words carefully, giving advance
warnings of events such as bed-
time, anticipating a child's
needs and acknowledging and
ewarding cooperative behav-
ior.

renth farce offers a
dose of spring fever
D In One Bed and
Out the Other a
tremendous
production
By EILEEN O'LEARY
SPSCIAL To ME :EWS ADVERTISER
PICKERING — In case you
haven't noticed, spring is in the air.
How do I know? Herongate Barn
Theatre has opened its spring sea-
son of comedies with the rollicking
French farce In One Bed and Out
the Other.
Playwrights Mawby Green and Ed
Feikat based this play on an old
turn -of -the -century French farce
Une Nuit Chez Vous ... Madame:
written by Jean De Lctraz
And if you are in doubt now
about spring, you won't be after
ret. this production. It is sure to
speed up your pulse rate and fill
your hearts with spring fever
Director Bev Nicholas and
Producer Aran E. Ward decided to
place this production at the than of
the century. This meant a lot of
work for the production team to cre-
ate the right atmosphere for this
Music festival
play — a period set and costumes
befitting the early 1900s.
The results are spectacular. The
set design, furnishings, lights and
sound work very well for this pro-
duction. The design incorporates
the ability for a very clever set
change and the set designer should
be congratulated.
Moreover, costumes are exquis-
ite and Margaret St. John and Ann
E. Ward deserve much praise for
the beautiful work they have done. I
guarantee each sten and costume
change is sure to take your breath
away. The play, in keeping with
spring. is about the pursuit of love,
although who loves who and for
how long is sometimes hard to fath-
om.
The play - centres around
Huguette (artfully played by
Madeline Atkinson) and Gaston
Dubois (hysterically portrayed by
Daryl Marks), a married couple
who are somewhat bored with each
other. The plot is complicated by a
young writer named Didier (well
played by newcomer John Drew),
who fancies he is in love with
Huguette. Further complications
occur because Didier has changed
identity with Maurice. the Dubois'
turns spotlight
on area talent

Peter Hurley).
Add two beautiful young
women, Clara who thinks she is in
love with Gaston Dubois (delight-
fully played by Anita Vandeneykel)
and Rosine, fresh from the
provinces, who is looking for a
lova in order to punish her fiance,
whom she has neva met. (Rosin is
portrayed with a sparkling sense of
fun by newcomer Barb Fitters).
To further complicate matters,
and Maurice's inheritance, his
gusty Aunt Alice (brilliantly played
by Joe Hubbard) arrives looking for
Rosine.
The play is well directed by Bev
Nicholas and extremely well cast.
The acting is good and in some
cases excellent. The pace was
sometimes slow in the first act, but
the second act makes up for that
And there are some wonderfully
funny moments which make the
show a huge success.
Everyone involved in this pro-

together in true ensemble fashion.

Last week's Name Dropping
column included an item about
Cassie Aldridge, but there was no
photograph. Her Mom has sent in
a picture, so we're running the
item again with a photograph.
Feb. 23 was circled on the cal-
endars in the Aldridge home,
because Cassie turned five years
old. The brown -eyed, brown -
haired cutie likes swimming,
skating, reading books and mak-
ing crafts. When she grows up,
Cassie wants to be a veterinarian.
In September, she's going to start
kindergarten. A party was held on
Feb. 25 with all of Cassie's
friends. Wishing Cassie a happy
birthday were Mom Janis, Dad
Dave and sister Diana.
