And we've come to a clear conclusion: Incumbent Mayor Wayne Arthurs is the best person to lead Pick- ering council into the next three years of municipal government. His record of leadership is apparent. Pickering's financial health is among the best in the Greater Toronto Area, attractive businesses have opted to locate and grow here, services to support residential growth continue to be addressed. But perhaps the most compelling reason for our endorsement of Mayor Arthurs is his style of politics. He has a reputation as being a consensus -builder and he believes in tackling issues as a member of a hard-working team. He doesn't practise the politics of confrontation which too often contributes to political gridlock, and he has a commitment to value on behalf of the taxpayers in the municipality. Pickering council already has a reputation for being fractious and combative, much to the disdain of con- stituents who want their elected representatives to debate issues instead of personalities. That is an issue Mayor Arthurs must address if he is to be reelected, but he is the person most suited to lead council into a less combative, more constructive style of governing. He has a good record behind him. He has the style of leadership Pickering needs. We encourage you to consider those elements as you cast your vote Nov. 14. To the editor: I am writing in response to the article entitled 'Residents angry drivers use street as short cut to avoid busy corner.' (Friday. Oct. 7). Mr. Goldhawk and Ms. Smith - Heard plus others are complain- ing that their subdivision is being used to avoid the intersection of Altona Road and Hwy. 2. 1 live on Altona Road and I will admit Mat I use Dalewood Drive and Brookridge Gate to access Hwy. 2. I do so to avoid any chance of an accident. During the morning rush hour it is extremely danger- ous to make a left hand turn onto Hwy. 2 as well as a right-hand turn. I understand everyone's complaint but until the Town decides to install traffic lights there, l feel I am forced to contin- ue using this so called "short cut". (Note some type of con- struction has begun at this inter- section). I would also like to state that during the many times I have used this short cut the drivers en route are not speed demons or sunning the stop sign. The resi- dents of this subdivision would have had to access Hwy. 2 via Altona Road if the extension of Dalewood had not been imple- mented. Then they too would have had to find an alternative route to get to the highway. I sin- cerely don't believe that any one in this area is at great risk of being injured by the traffic flow here. I would like to comment on Ms. Smith-Heard's statement of being "a prisoner of air condi- tioning" during the summer, due to noise pollution. My house faces Altona Road and for the past 10 years I have had to keep my windows and doors closed because of the noise and dust pol- lution caused by the construction of their subdivision and the one on the west side of Altona Road. When my family moved to Pick- ering 18 years ago both sides of the road were open fields. Instead of those fields, 1 have a two-lane roadway in front of my house and in the back. Everyone has to real- ize that Pickering and the Altona Road area is expanding, hopeful- ly for the better, and we must accept the fact that not everything is going to satisfy our needs or concerns. Great casting makes for great laughs in comedy 0 It Runs in the Family staged at Herongate in Pickering brings out the best in local talent By Bill Simpson SPECIAL TO THE 17Ew'S ADVERTISER PICKERING - The new come- dy which opened last weekend at Pickering's Herongate Barn The- atre continues the great British tradition of staging laughs. It Runs In The Family, written by Ray Cooney, puts characters into an embarrassing situa- tion, and then makes them try to talk their way out of it. In this show, Dr. David Mortimore is the one in a tight spot. As a senior doctor at a hospital. he has the honor giving the annu- al "Ponsonby Lecture" to a audi- ence of 200 colleagues. His attempts to rehearse his speech are repeatedly thwarted by sever- al people and then thrown into near chaos by the arrival of nurse Jane Tate. who worked at the hospital 20 years earlier. Without going into detail, I will just say that Dr. Mortimore does not want to discuss his rela- tionship to Ms Tate with his wife, so he starts to improvise explanations. I won't hint at any more of the story, but it is a good script. However, it was the acting that made this show an outstanding piece of entertainment. This pro- duction seemed particularly well acted, by all I 1 players. Much credit goes to Director Ann Ward for first-rate casting choices. It is unusual to find a cast that is both this large and such a high standard. Bev Nicholas as Dr. Morti- more was on stage for most of the play. He gave a strong perfor- mance in this huge role. In the midst of the sometimes frantic action on stage, Andrea Risk was calm, elegant and beautiful as his i1 wife. Rosemary. Mike Wood -bridge played the role of Dr. Bonney with enthusiasm and wonderful timing. He made this character funny, charming and real. Judging from the comments I heard, the rest of the audience enjoyed this show just as much as I did. If you like a good come- dy, go and see this one. It is great fun. The Wanderers got past the Toronto Lions second team 17-13 in the title match at Fletcher's Fields in Markham Saturday. The Wanderers thirds have advanced to the TRU championship contest for the past two years. In 1993, they lost to the Toronto Nomads fourth team in the title tilt. More than 20 teams will compete for the $500 fust prize, and all players will be treated to food and entertainment throughout the three-day 'spiel which starts on Friday, Nov. I 1 and ends Sunday. Nov. 13. The semi-finals and finals are slated for Sunday. Meanwhile, Ontario Curling Association (OCA) playdowns start the same weekend, with the Unitel Mixed and the Joe Todd Sr. Senior Mixed Zone Bonspiel taking place in Whitby and Dalewood. respectively. The Unitel Mixed playdowns culminate with the Canadian championships next Jan. 7 to 15 in Sarnia. The national mixed finals will be covered on national TV as part of the Season of Champions Curling. The OCA and the Ontario Ladies Curling Association now have Olympic implications for the men's and women's teams entered in the Labatt Tankard and Scott Tournament of Hearts events. Curling is now an Olympic sport, and eight countries will compete in both men's and women's competition in Nagano, Japan in 1998. Japan, as host country, will receive automatic entry, while the other seven countries will be determined by the results of the Ford World Championships in the next three years — Brandon, Manitoba in 1995. Hamilton in 1996 and Bern, Switzerland in 1997. Rinks vying to compete in the Olympics must first win at the club. zone, regional, provincial, Canadian and, finally, world levels. Canada should easily qualify for both the men's and women's events for the Olympics. ♦HOCKEY Atom Panthers make semi-final of tourney PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers A -Plus Software minor atom 'AA' rep hockey squad made it to the semi-finals of a 12 -team tournament in Burlington recently. The Panthers fell to Whitby 4-2 in the semi-final match. Kevin Krasnowski scored both goals for Pickering, with assists to Gregory McHale. Adam Murray and Michael Weiss. Pickering opened the tourney with a 4-2 win over Richmond Hill. Michael Cuzzolino, Mark Gosse. Kyle Hamilton and Krasnowski scored. The Panthers then suffered a 3-2 loss to St. Catharines. Stuart Baumgartner and Bradley Binns scored for Pickering. In the third game. Pickering prevailed over the Scarborough Stallions 3-2. Baumgartner scored twice, with a single to Krasnowski. Assisting were Adam Diemert. Jonathan Samson. Weiss and Binns. Goalies Billy Nicholson and Daniel Sharpe turned in solid efforts throughout the tourney. In regular -season play, the Panthers registered a win, a loss and a tie in recent action. Pickering lost a narrow 3-2 decision to the Vaughan Rangers when a third -period rally fell short. Samson and Nicholas Vierra scored, with assists to Daniel Forrester, Gosse and Johnston. The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but were forced to salvage a 4-4 draw with Barrie. Forrester, Krasnowski, McHale and Samson scored, with assists to Hale with two, Binns, Vierra, and Forrester with one apiece. Pickering also dropped a 5-2 decision to Whitby.
