DURHAM — The minimum sentence for people using guns in crimes
like Thursday's bloody bank robbery in Port Perry should be multiplied
five times. says the chairman of the Durham Regional Police Services
Board.
Jim Witty, who's also Ajax mayor, is once again
demanding the federal government give stiffer prison
terms to weapon -toting criminals like the two masked
gunmen who shot three Durham police officers and two
civilians during the Port Perry bold -up around 7:30
p.m.
"The minimum sentence for a crime with a weapon
should be changed from one year to five years with no
Jim Witty chance for parole;' says Mr. Witty.
He's adamant that tougher sentencing will act as a
deterrent to such crimes.
"If somebody realizes that if he does something stupid with a weapon,

Airport not needed: foes
FROM PAGE 1
reach passenger capacity by around
2025 and runway capacity by 2017.
Paul Kavanagh, deputy director
of the SOAAS study, said it's being
conducted "to try and resolve the
issue once and for all".
According to Mr. Kavanagh, the
factors being taken into considera-
tion in choosing between Pickering
and Hamilton if a new airport is
needed are accessibility to the
Toronto area, environmental impact,
social impact, and the cost of devel-
opment. The Pickering site has the
advantages of easier accessibility
and less surrounding development.
The site being considered here
consists of 18,600 acres of land
expropriated in north Pickering by
the federal government in 1972 for
an airport that was not built.
Several of those who attended
the forum criticized Transport Cana-
da for holding it in Ajax, maintain-
ing it should have been held in Pick-
ering. Several suggested the govem-
ment doesn't have enough money to
build a new airport and was wasting
taxpayers' money by holding anoth-
er forum. As at previous forums,
there was much support for preserv-
ing the land for agricultural use.
In a later interview, Tommy
Thompson, vice-chairman of People
or Planes, maintained there is no
need in the foreseeable future for
another, airport in southern Ontario.
He noted federal transport offi-
cials have been far off the mark with
their estimates of how much air traf-
fic would increase. In 1969, he said,
those estimates predicted 198 mil-
lion passengers going through the
Pearson airport by the year 2000. In
1972 the estimates were revised
down to 62 million, and then during
the 1980% to 30 million. Last year.
said Mr. Thompson, 20.48 million
passengers used Pearson.
Transport Canada's SOARS dis-
cussion paper bases projections on
estimates of 35 million passengers
by 2011 and 45 million by 202.5.
"if their estimates are as accurate
now as they have been in the last
few years that will never happen,"
said Mr. Thompson. "Why destroy
the best (agricultural) land for some-
thing for which there's no proven
need?"
Bryon Hurrle, chairman of the
Committee for the Pickering Airport
Community, also noted it makes lit-
tle sense to destroy good farmland
when the need for food is increasing.
"What people were saying was
there's no necessity for an airport in
Pickering," he said. "There's no rea-
son and there's no money."
Both Durham West MPP Jim
Wiseman and Ontario Riding MP
Dan McTeague attended the forum.
Mr. Wiseman maintained there's
no money available for a Pickering
airport, for building the infrastruc-
ture that would be needed to support
it, and for the "huge" cost of con-
structing the rail link to the airport
which would be required. He also
noted secondary airports have never
been successful in places such as
Chicago and Montreal, because no
airline wants to be away from the
main airport.
"They should just forget about an
airport in north Pickering and save
the land for agricultural uses," said
Mr. Wiseman.
Mr. McTeague said Minister of
Transport Doug Young has told him
the public will have an opportunity
to comment on the final SOAAS
report before the minister makes his
decision, which is expected in Janu-
ary.
"The people who have been
involved in this a long time are
much too wise to be bamboozled by
bureaucrats," said Mr. McTeague.

New separate
school boss
named soon
DURHAM — The separate school
board will announce its new director
by the second week of November,
says board chairman Kevin Aske.
A special meeting of the Durham
Region Roman Catholic Separate
School Board will be held then to
approve selection of a replacement for
retiring director Earl L.agroix, who'll
step down Manch 31, 1995.
When the deadline for applications
passed Monday, there were eight peo-
ple after the job, including a few board
employees.
The board will pare down the list
of candidates during interviews to be
held Nov. 5. A selection will then be
made from a short list.
Although the new director will be
named next month, the chosen candi-
date will not take the reins of power
until the new year.
The board has spent $16,000 on its
search for a new director, conducted
by the Institute for Catholic Education,
which provides consulting services to
separate boards on curriculum and
other issues.
When the board made the decision
to hire the consultant last month Mr.
Aske said the hiring was essential to
avoid a conflict of interest situation
during the interviewing and hiring
process, since the board's superinten-
dent of human resources was a possi-
ble candidate for the direcim's job.
Mr. Lagroix announced his retire-
ment Aug. 31. He has requested the
new director be in place a few months
prior to his departure to ensure a
smooth transition of power takes

More ammo
As the News Advertiser's Friday edition was going to
press carrying an editorial with the headline "More police
now", three Durham officers were being gunned down in a
bank robbery in Port Perry.
While putting more police on the force will not necessari-
ly save the life of another officer, the latest in a frightening
series of shootings in Durham underscores the need to step
up crime control.
It's naive to cling to the belief that serious crime doesn't
happen in Durham, that the shootings we've experienced in
the past few months are isolated occurrences far from the
norm. Our communities, as quiet and safe as they might
have seemed in the past, are part of the rapidly -growing
Greater Toronto Area and just don't seem so safe and quiet
anymore. While there's no need to panic, there is a need to
respond to the criminal element and there's a definite need
to increase the manpower of our police services.
Durham councillors will have the opportunity Wednes-
day to do something about it when they'll be asked to
approve the hiring of 20 new officers immediately, without
waiting until the 1995 Region budget comes up for approval
next April.
It's to he hoped politicians will give the force the money
it needs to properly patrol our neighborhood,, and investigate
crime.
Thursday night's shooting in Port Peng follows closely
on the heels of murders in Ajax and Oshawa where victims
wereshot during robberies. Durham police had been predict-
ing it would happen. last July, after thugs burst into the
Texas Country Show and Dance Bar in Ajax and opened
fire, police warned it was only a matter of time before a life
was lost in a robbery.
Now police, with the support of Police Services Board
chairman Jim Witty, want more manpower.
Give it to them.

Friday morning was no ordinary morning — but it
was one that is becoming all too familiar.
The first thing on my mind when I opened my
eyes was to get the most up-to-date information pos-
sible on Thursday night's shootings in Port Perry.
News angles, photo opportunities, news holes —
those were the things I was preparing for.
I wasn't prepared for what happened next. After
I'd run up and down the stairs flicking radio and tele-
vision channels looking for the latest information I
turned to the task of getting the household ready for
the day.
My four-year-old son ran into the kitchen yelling
"Mom, did you hear? Six people got dead last night."
That's a loose interpretation of the news broadcast
he'd seen announcing five people had been shot the
previous evening.
Four -year-olds shouldn't have to worry about
shootings and robberies and the like. They should be
playing with trucks and sitting on their moms' knees
watching cartoons.
All day while I went about the business of putting
a newspaper together I thought about little kids who
grow up too soon because of the stupid things adults
do. And I thought about those five people who were
shot and their own children — growing up too soon.
A few observations I heard around the office cer-
tainly provided food for thought. i
* "At least all these shootings are unrelated," said
one person, referring to the recent robberies in Ajax
and Oshawa that left two dead and three injured. No,
there isn't one crazed gunman going from business to
business shooting and killing in Durham Region —
we have at least five. Reassuring.
* "Now is not the time for a kneejerk reaction" to
crime in the region. On the other hand, maybe that's
just what we need — a heaping dose of outrage.
* In reference to Thursday's gunmen having been
arrested within hours: "These guys aren't too bright".
Well, there are plenty of stupid criminals out there.
Imagine the damage they're capable of doing.
Incidents of violent crime are going to continue to
rise along with our population. We have to give the
long arm of the law a hand in fighting crime and that
includes proper staffing levels and tougher sentences.
There's a municipal election campaign in progress
and a provincial election soon to follow — is any-

Pickering s teens, bus drivers'
work on better relations
PICKERING — High school
students here took a step toward
better relations with Pickering
Transit bus drivers during a two-
hour workshop at Pine Ridge Sec-
ondary School Wednesday.
Tlx workshop, dubbed Project
Harmony, is the brainchild of a
committee comprised of Pine
Ridge students and staff members
and a senior official of Pickering
Transit.
Representatives from Durham
Regional Police, Pickering Town
Centre, Pickering Transit, Picker-
ing Central Library and the Culmm
and Recreation Department and
three Pickering high schools took
part in the workshop.
They discussed conflict resolu-
tion through skits depicting situa-
tions between students and adults
in the Pickering community.
"Positive ways of handling pos-
sible conflicts were shared and
ideas for future meetings identi-
fied," says teacher Brenda Chan. a
member of the school's Project
Harmony committee.
'Ibis proactive step is the first
of many toward creating a positive
community spirit among the
youths and adults in the Town of
Pickering." The committee was
formed to identify the concerns of
students and drivers about public
transit and reduce conflict on Pick-
ering Transit buses, says Ms. Chan.
The committee surveyed stu-
dents at Pine Ridge. St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School and
Dumbarton High School and Pick-
ering Transit bus drivers.
The results have produced a
more efficient transit service for
the students and a more positive
relationship among the drivers and
students." Ms. Chan says.
Pickering Block Parents need your help
PICKERING — The world can
be a scary place for little children —
filled with bullies who taunt them
on the way to school, frightening
strangers who offer them candy and
ask if they want a ride, and hurtful
accidents that happen when mom
and dad aren't around to soothe
them.
Block Parents make the world a
safer place for youngsters by being
there when they need help. The only
problem is that there aren't as many
of them as there could be.
Pickering has 600 Block Parents,
but more would be much better,
according to Brenda Visconti of
Pickering Block Parents.
"The whole goal is to have num-
bers, to have a link system," says
Ms. Visconti. "It would be great to
see one on every sweet There's just
no limit to how many people we
would want The more Block Par-
ents there are the safer it is."
To celebrate Block Parents
Week Oct. 24 to 30, the Pickering
organization is working to spread
the word on the need for more
Block Patents, and on how easy it is
to be one.
"You can be a part-time Block
Parent," says Ms. Visconti, explain-
ing it is enough even if people are
available only in the evenings and
on weekends, or only a few hours a
week at irregular tithes.
The Pickering organization is
looking for volunteers to help run
the organization and raise funds, as
well as for new Block Parents.
Anyone wishing to help out in
any way may call Ms. Visconti
(839-7445) or Cathy Greenside
(509-2234). Brochures and applica-
tion forms are also available at area
schools and from local police sta-
tions.

Troj,oans dump Spartans
in crucial pigskin clash
By AL RIVETT
SPORTS RE"IER
AJAX-PICKERING — The
battle of the gridiron undefeated
went to the Pickering High School
Trojans senior squad.
The Trojans (4-0) and the
Dunbarton High School Spartans (4-
0) clashed for sole possession of first
place in Lake Ontario Secondary
School Athletics (LOSSA) senior
football at Dunbarton Thursday
afternoon.
Pickering High parlayed a big
advantage in play during the fust half
and untimely Dunbarton turnovers
into a 21-9 victory over the Spartans.
While this battle went to the
Trojans, coaches of both squads
believe they'll renew the rivalry in
the LOSSA championship contest
next month.
"I can see their team in the
LOSSA final, more than likely.- says
Trojans bead coach Graham Hiron.
"I think we'll be ready when we
play them again," adds Spartans'
head coach Pieter Kaiser.
The Trojans held a huge
advantage in tune of possession in
the fust halt, keeping the Spartans'
defence on the field for virtually the
whole 30 minutes. Pickering
quarterback Chris Johnson hooked
up with Khary Adams on a 25 -yard
pass play on a fourth -and -10
situation which took the ball down to
the one -yard line. One play later,
fullback Damian Bowen barged in
for the major with five minutes to go
before half-time.
With just more than a minute left
Pickering High Trojans' Khary Adams, left, tries to break the grip of
Dunbarton High Spartans' Paul Mitchell during LOSSA senior
football action at Dunbarton Thursday. Pickering High won 21-9.
in the second quarter, the Trojans
scored their second major, again set
up by Adams, whose 25 -yard run
took Pickering down to the two -yard
litre. Once again, Bowen got the call
in the backfield and, on a third -down
play, broke the plain of the end zone
for the touchdown.
As much as the first half
belonged to the Trojans, the Spartans
enjoyed a renaissance in the second
half. Dunbarton relied on the work
of stag running back Theron Walker,
as well as a Pickering holding
penalty to set up its first scoring
play. Quarterback Jeff McConkey
threw a strike to wide receiver
Marcel Van Amerongem from 10
yards out.
A while later, Dunberton's Andy
Henderson counted a two-point
safety after tackling Trojans' pivot
Johnson in the end zone.
However, two Dunbarton
fumbles played havoc for the squad
in the last half. One nullified a long
Spartans' drive down to the Trojans'
15 -yard line. The other fumble
paved the way for the Trojan' third
touchdown of the contest, again
scored by Bowen on a three -yard
tun.
Pickering kicker Rob Horsunan
was good on all three convert
attempts, while Dunbarton kicker
Chris McKee made his convert try.

THIS WEEK FEATURING:
"Z ART GALLERY"
If you appreciate the atmosphere
that beautiful art creates in your home or
are interested in collecting the finest in
limited edition prints, then you should
visit Z ART GALLERY in Pickering.
Located at 1900 Dixie Rd. at Finch
Avenue in the Loeb Glendale Plaza,
owner Mike Jaensch invites you to see
his store which is now in its fifth year.
He first started out as a collector
who decorated his homes with limited
edition prints.
Eventually he saw the advantage of
starting his own business and has been
very successful with many customers
coming back again and again after
discovering the enjoyment of a beautiful
work of art.
"We have prints by such people as
Robert Bateman, Trisha Romance, A.J.
Casson and John Seery -Lester," says
Mike. "Our store appeals to many tastes
whether it's an appreciation for wildlife
or Victorian architecture as well as
family portrayals and sport scenes."
Most limited editions have 1000
reproductions per original and each is
signed and numbered by the artist.
They can range in price from 075
and up depending on the artist and his or
her popularity at a particular time.
"This style of art is affordable and of
the highest quality," says Mike. "People
buy them to enhance the decor of their
home while some acquire them for their
investment potential."
Z ART GALLERY is also known for
its expert framing service.
Mike will help you choose from
hundreds of frames as well as the
backing and the matting which are both
acid free to prevent discoloring of your
print.
Another unique service is the
framing of memorabilia like old photos,
mementos and pieces of clothing.
"We'll frame anything," he says.
"Why have special keepsakes hidden
away so no one can appreciate them."
Soon Z ART GALLERY will be
hosting exhibitions by a variety of artists
who will be on hand to sign their work.
So visit Z ART for the best in
limited editions or call (905) 837-0144.
You'll find a wide variety of beautiful limited Bdkion prints by l rtbts such as Robert
6atuuatte TN wAoMwos and Richard Sloan atZ,AgT QALLERY in pigw tq .
