Mr. Chow was killed in the gun shop between noon and 3 p.m. While police confirm several guns were stolen from the Barr Rd. shooting range, they're having difficulty determining how many weapons are miss- ing because they haven't been able to contact every- one who may have had a firearm stored there. At around 1:30 a.m., a 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck slammed into the front of their house, cracking bricks and the foundation, buckling a wall and window frame, and damaging their front yard. "it sounded like a demolition ball had hit the house," says Mar- lene Boetto. "We heard this awful bang and the house shook. We jumped out of bed and my husband ran outside and saw the truck." A 2222 -year-old Scarborough man driving the truck was getting out of the vehicle when lee Boetto got outdoors. The truck was travelling northbound on Lake Driveway W. when it jumped a curb, took out a tree on the property opposite the Bo ettos, crossed Vale and crashed into the house. "His foot never hit his brakes," Mrs. Boetto says. "The house stopped him. The whole house shook. "Our neighbors heard tires screeching and then they heard a big bang. They were here before we got outside. It amazes me all the things he didn't hit, like the lamp post and stop sign," she says. The driver "said he didn't know how he got here. Apparently he was at a party and dropped a friend off. I don't know how the heck he got to Ajax." The motorist was charged with impaired driving and he'll appear in court Nov. 9. He suffered a gash to his forehead when he hit the windshield. See `HE...Page 3 V ECONOMY Pickering mayor serves up good news ❑ Arthurs won't waffle in bid to make town appetizing for business, breakfast meeting told PICKERING — Pickering has weathered the recession well and is a great place to invest. That was the message served up by mayor Wayne Arthurs to the local business community at the Town's first-ever economic development breakfast Wednesday morning at The Old liver - pool House. The breakfast replaces the Town's annual eco- nomic development banquet held in October of every year. However, this new method of reacting out to the business community is expected to con- tinue year-round, with several economic develop- ment breakfasts for various sectors such as real estate or manufacturing. A schedule for the breakfast% has yet to be determined. About 65 local entrepreneurs who turned up for Wednesday's event were treated to a detailed presentation from the mayor on why Pickering is such a good place to do business. He pointed out Pickering's tax rate is among the lowest in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and that the Town has worked hard at keeping it at that level. Mr. Arthurs noted Town council would have lowered the tax rate by one-half a per- centage point over the last three years if it didn't have to impose a special 1.51per cent levy on tax- payers to hire firefighters for the new fire hall at Dixie Rd. and Finch Ave. So taxes actually increased one per cent over the same period. "For all practical purposes we are debt -free," he said, explaining the Town's debentures are "insignificant" in > comparison to its total budget. He noted $30 million has been spent on capital projects over the past five years without incurring debt. The mayor also pointed out only 44 per cent of the Town's operating budget comes from direct taxation, with the rest emanat- ing from sources such as user fees and grants in lieu of taxation, like those received from the Pick- ering Nuclear Generating Station. Senior's sexacsault, childp orn case put over until Oct. 24 PICKERING — A 60 -year-old Pickering man charged with sexually assaulting and taking pomographic photographs of two young girls in 1982 and 1983 appeared briefly in Oshawa provincial court Wednesday moxnirn_. He's scheduled to appear in court again Oct. 24 at i I am. Ile is not in custody. The man was charged with attempted extortion, possession of pornographic material and two counts of sexual assault following a Durham Regional Police investiga- tion. On Sept. 6, a woman in her late 20s complained the maul had sexual- ly assaulted her and photographed tier in the nude as a girl. The residents of Dadewooxl Dr. and Brookridge Gate appeared before council to ask the "Town to close Brookridge where it intersects with Altona Rd. They maintained they were told when they bought their homes that there would be a cul-de-sac where Brookridge meet,, Dalewood, and that they've been suffering an endless traffic night- mare since Daalewcxxl was extended from Brookridge to Rougemount Dr. in late 1983, creating a connec- tion to I Iwy. 2. Motorists apparently use Dale - wood and Broxakridge to avoid the busy intersection at Allo ni Rd. and Ilwy. 2. Mr. Goldhawk said a hydro box on Dalewood has been "demol- ished" three times over the past two years by drivers who have gone off the road; that one house had a car plow through its front yard and almost through its front window; and that the owners of another home had to replace the tree in their front yard two times after it was hit by motorists. Wendy Smith -Heard, who lives opposite the corner of Dalewood and Brookridge, says she lives "in fear' for the safety of her children. "I in good conscience cannot let my children roars," she said. She also noted she is a "prisoner of air conditioning" in the summer because the traffic makes it too noisy to open the win(k)ws at night. Marc Charette of Rougemount Dr. presented council a petition signed by 52 residents of his street opposed to the proposed closure. "Closing one area and moving traffic on to Rougemount is not a solution;" he said. Council voted to have the Town hire a traffic consultant to study the area. I also share Mr. Cobean's opinion that stiffer gun control is not the answer to vio- lent crimes, that stiffer sentences for criminals and capital punish- ment will keep these violent criminals off our streets and therefore our communities will be much safer. Too many innocent people are being killed and too many violent criminals are getting off too easy. I will never forget how I felt when I heard that Metro Toronto police constable Todd Bavlis was murdered. I assure you that there were thousands of people who felt the same way as I did on that sad day. 1 can remember where I was when I heard about that brave youns man's fate. I had many feelings about this sense- less tragedy, but as devastated as 1 felt I knew that nothing could compare to what his family, friends and colleagues must have felt. I have not forgotten Todd Bavlis and I know that I never will. But memories don't save lives. what will is stiffer laws and the elimination of these violent criminals from our societies. I called both my MP and h1PP to talk with them about mv con- cerns and my wish for capital punishment to be brought back. I spoke with Dan McTeaeue about these concerns and he informed me that he didn't believe in capi- tal punishment. So where does this leave us° I guess as a part of that lottery you spoke of and I assure you that I don't want to take the chance of somethine happening to my family or myself either. The branch will join the Infor- mation Network For Ontario (INFO) with the help of a S10,800 grant from the provin- cial Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation. Access to all those library systems means Rouge Hill users can get inter -library loans from them. The central branch of the library is already on INFO. An added benefit of the grant, notes Pickering Public Library chief executive officer Sandy Cameron, is that it will enable the library to purchase for Rouge Hill the CD ROM hardware needed to get on INFO — hard- ware which can he; used for other purposes as well. Mr. Genuis, a pianist and vocalist, was the only non -Polish performer invited to a music fes- tival in the city of Krakow, orga- nized to raise money for AIDS patient care in the former com- munist country. The festival, which took place July 10-14, attracted around 10,000 people. The Port Perry resident was playing a concert for the Polish community in Toronto earlier this year when the co-ordinator of the music festival in Poland heard his recently -produced CD, Last in Line, and invited him to perform there. The performance was particu- larly satisfying, however, because it benefited a good cause, he says. "Whenever anyone comes together to do a charity concert, it's a special feeling. Everyone knew what the cause was. Ten thousand people were hopeful for their brothers and sisters to come through the disease," he says. The experience opened Mr. Genuis's eyes to what AIDS patients living in the former communist country are facing. "I'm not sure they have the means there to care for AIDS patients. There's not the accep- tance there that we have here. They're still in the ostracizing stage." Mr. Genuis says he wanted to see the situation AIDS patients are facing first hand, but circum- stances made it impossible for visits to take place. "I didn't see anything first hand. I asked, but because of where the concert was held and the timing of it, it was impossi- ble.
