AJAX - An Ajax couple will
pay off the mortgage after
winning $250,000 playing Encore
in Saturday's Lotto 6149 draw.
"I couldn't believe it. I stili
can't believe it," says Angela
Smyth.
She and husband Dan claimed
their Encore first prize Monday.
They'll also go on a "little
holiday", buy a vehicle, pay off
some bills, and invest the
remainder, Mrs. Smyth says.
Her husband discovered the
couple had won while reading the
newspaper Sunday morning.
"He checked it and then
checked a few more times. Then
he called me in and we checked
it," she says. The couple then
went to a convenience store to
verify the numbers again.
The couple's previous largest
win was about $50.
The Smyths have two sons,
aged four and four months.
They bought the winning ticket
at Smoker's Corner 'N' Gifts in
The Pickering Town Centre.

Hot summer for
tourist attractions
D Tourism pumps
$300 million a year
into Durham
By JOAN RANSBERRY
DUMANt STS
Dt!RIiANI - It's been a good
summer for Durham's tourism
industry, business and government
officials report.
All of Durham's tourist spots
have been busy, especially
Whitby's Cullen Gardens and
Miniature Village and
Family Kartways,
Oshawa's Parkw(x)d
Estates and the
Bowmanville "Loo in takh
(lain ton.
Durham residents are
µ.
also in a fun mix) d. Since
the Region is celebrating
its 20th birthday,
Celebrate Durham '94 events are
being held throughout the year and
across the region.
Norm Leigh, Durham*s manager
of business development, says
tourism "overall" is on the rise.
Then: are a number of reasons
why. We've had sunny skies, the
recession's grip is finally kx).sening,
the low Canadian dollar Li attracting
Americans and keeping Canadians
at home. In addition, marketing
techniques on behalf of the
individual businesses, the local
tourist groups and governments
have improved.
Durham residents are also
helping boost iocal tourism. -People
are also taking stay-at-home
vacations," says Mr. Leigh. Day
tripping is catching on everywhere,
he points out
Durham Region publishes a
visitors' guide and tourism map,
outlining tourist atllwdm in each
of Durham's eight municipalities.
Durham officials take a serious
approach to tourism, stresses Mr.
Leigh. "It's a $300 -million -a -year
business," he says. "There are
13,000 jobs linked to tourism in
"wham "
In order to ensure that Durham's
tourist trade stays on the right track
the Region is in the process of hiring
a tourism co-ordinator.
"tire position will be filled soon.
We hope to have someone in place
by October," says Mr. Leigh.
While the number of Americans
visiting Durham is increasing, the
number of French-speaking visitors
is on the rise at Parkwood, the
former residence of R.S.
McLaughlin, located on Simcoe St.
S., reports Brain Malcolm,
Parkwocxl's manager.
Since Canadians are
losers when it comes to
the American money
exchange, Canadians,
Stay- including those from
,Me Quebec, aren't heading to
the U.S. in droves.
'Area people
;MQ I Instead, ng in Ont are
" holidaying in Ontario,
says Mr. Malcolm.
"Quebecers usually go to Vermomt.
Now they're coming here."
Last year, Parkmxxd had 12,000
paying customers tour the estate.
Numbers for 1991 are expected to
exceed last year's. "We're doing
well," says Mr. Malcolm.

Politicians lobby
for gun curbs
By JOAN RANSBERRY
tWRNAM STAFF
DURHAM - Local politicians want fewer guns on
the streets and no Sunday liquor store openings.
Those are just a few of the demands made by
municipal politicians at the Association of
Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) convention in
Toronto this week.
A proposal to open liquor stores on Sunday is
certainly not getting the blessing of Ontario's
municipal officials, including those from Durham.
During their resolution session at the Royal York
hotel, AMO members voted to ask the provincial
government to rethink its proposal to open Liquor
Control Board of Ontario outlets on Sundays.
Delegates also encouraged the provincial
government not to give into groups demanding
Canadians continue to be free to use firearms.
Local officials realized that when it comes to
curbing exotic pets, they're way ahead of the game.
When AMO members encouraged each other to adopt
an exotic pet bylaw, prohibiting the keeping of many
types of exotic animals, local politicians didn't need
to take notes. Tigers, lions, elephants, snakes and
some spiders aren't welcome here.
While the politicians took formal stands on such
issues as lap dancing, beer drinking, guns and exotic
pets, they drew the line when it came to cigarettes; the
delegates didn't go along with a request to ask the
federal government to reconsider its recent decision to
lower the tobacco tax.
Pickering beach unsafe
DURHAM - Durham's Department of Health has
finished conducting its tests on beaches for the summer.
Eight beaches moss Durharn have been "led as
unsafe for swimming, the latest in bickering.
Frenchman's Bay west beach was the last beach
found to be unsafe and was posted Monday after
bacterial levels climbed to 149 E. coli per 100 millilitres
of water.
The health department checks for Escherichia coli
bacteria by taking five water samples from each of the
Region's 16 beaches once a week. The, st.•utdard is 100 E.
coli per 100 millilitres of water.
Frenchman's Bay west joins the following trenches
that were passed earlier this surnmer:
Rotary Park in Ajax, Frenchman's
Bay east in Pickering, Beaverton
Beach south in Brock Township,
Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, Kinsmen
Beach in Scugog, Port Darlington
west beach in Clarington and
Newcastle Beach central.
Anyone swimming in areas
posted as unsafe is at risk of getting
ear, eye, nose and throat infections,
and if water's ingested,
gastrointestinal problems.
People are also warned not to
swim in any of the Region's weeks
and streams because they have
always proven to be polluted.

RENOVATIONS Part 2 of 7
One of the key elements in deciding on the amount to
be spent on renovations is your "immediate
neighborhood". A basic real estate truth - house values
are often limited by the houses around them.
Assume for the moment that you live in an average
home in a $100,000 neighborhood. Renovations worth $30,000 are then
added to your home. You now need $130,000 to stay even if you sold.
Problem: People looking for $130,000 - $150,000 homes generally don't
stop shop in $100,000 neighborhoods. This would be a classic case of over
remodelling.
Rule of thumb. Don't add value to your home by more than 20% above the
best house in your area.
Next week, we'll discuss one of the most important rooms in your home. If
you don't call me first to list your home:

The S2.6 -million community
centre/library/firehall is to be built
under the federal -provincial
infrastructure program, with Ottawa.
Queen's Park and Pickering splitting
the cost three: ways.
In the letter, Mr. Van Kempen
maintains the special meeting is
needed to determine whether the
Claremont project still has the
support of council, since its price tag
has increased from an initial estimate
of S2.1 million. Ile notes the Town
will also have to pay $166,000 for
one piece of land it bought for the
project and is kx)kin(, at purchasing
another.
"Surely it makes sense." writes
the councillor, "to commence
preliminary work on other pmjecL%
rather than be faced with a rapidh•-
approiw-hing (Sept. 30', deadline ((or
submitting project ideas for
infrastructure funding approval).
Call the meeting of council and
allow the public to learn what is
going ort.'
But Mr. Arthurs says he Iters had
no indication from any other
member of council that they're
dissatisfied with either the decision
to go ahead with the Claremont
project cx the pmcem the Town has
followed in going ahead with it.
"Ilx-re is no need in my ,riew for
a special meeting of council," he
states.
The mayor says the estimated
cost of the community centre is now
higher because the first figures given
to council were only preliminary,
and that the price of the additional
land has not been included in the
estimates because it isn't eligible for
infrastructure funding from the
federal and provincial governments.
As well, he notes some of the
cost of the land will likely be
recovered when the Town either
sells or uses the property presently
occupied by the fire hall, library.
community centre and seniors'
centre the new Claremont facility
will replaty.
As for the public debate Mr. Van
Kempen is asking for, the mayor
says it's too early for that.
"I wasn't aware nominations (for
the Nov. 14 municipal election) had
closed." says Mr. Arthurs. (Mr. Van
Kempen is vying for the mayor's job
in that trattle for ballots.) '"Ibere will
be ample time should somebody
want to pursue this as an election
LSSue "
The mayor suggests Mr. Van
Kempen is already campaigning and
is "grasping at every opportunity" to
challenge the Claremont project.
"Ck-,uly this is being orchestrated
around an election rather than
continuing to do the business of the
Town," says Mr. Arthurs.

Decision time
What is your role, as a good citizen, when it comes to
dealing with racism?
Are you prepared for the day when someone knocks at
your door, asking you to join a white supremacist group? Do
you know what you'll do if you discover a pamphlet has been
left in your mailbox inviting you to a Heritage Front meeting?
Have you ever considered your thoughts on such groups?
Politicians, police and the media did just that at the
Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference
held in Toronto this week.
It's no secret there are racist groups in Durham Region.
Last week, police reported a pamphlet warning white
women not to have scxu:d reLatio ws with non-white men was
found in Oshawa The I leritage Front has reared its ugly head
as well.
So what are residents and politicians to do?
Be prepared, says the fxtwl.
Being prepared should not mean waiting until a leaflet is
dropped at your home. Racist jokes, slurs and stereotypes all
add up and ultimately lead to damage.
Decide now whether or not you want to tx- known as the
person who always has a hilarious joke about a certain race, or
the person who always lends a helping hand to all races.
Decide now if your children will grow up hearing you
criticize the lifestyle of the immigrants next door or if they'll
be educated and enlightened about other cultures.
Decide now whether you'll remain silent if you happen to
be, in the company of people who are having a conversation of
a racist nature or if you'll politely but firmly state that you
don't enjoy the torte of their &%cucsicxt.
Racism is an evil, evil problem in our scxicty. Everyone
gets hurt and no one wins. Plan to live peacefully in your
community, with your neighbors of all colors, shapes and
sizes. And be prepared to fight against anyone who tries to
destroy that harmony.

Taxpayers lack of concern is disappointing
To the editor,
In reply to the articles that

August 17. Mayor Defends

While it is hard to conceive the

improvement of the fire hall and
possibly the library, but a new

explanation can be reached by the
advertisement on the abutting
page.
The most disappointing fact is
the silence, and apparent non -
caring of the various ratepayers
associations.
It was only a few years ago that
any mayors decision that affected
the Town as this one will, would
have had the Town's residents up
in arms, and their associations
letting the council knowing of their
feelings.
Surely the taxpayers still care
about the Town, or has the press
failed to fully report what is
happening.
If we are lucky there is still
time for them to speak out.

Victim says welcome to little Toronto
To the editor,
Monday evening Aug. 22 between 8:15 and 9:15 pm. some person or
persons took it upon themselves to take ownership of my bike and my
son's bike. I don't know what makes you think you have the right to
invade my space. You think you're funny, well funny in the head perhaps.
May my wheel fall off as you are riding it full speed down a hill,
maybe that will knock some sense into you, you goof.
For all the good neighbors in the Griffith/Wickens area please
remember to close garage doors as we are now living in little Toronto.

AJAX BUSINESSMAN"UP FOR BIG AWARD
El Tarxien Corp.
president
Entrepreneur of Year
finalist after saving
failing company
By SAL BOMMARITO
STAFF REPORTER
AJAX - When businessman
Ralph Zarboni took over as
president of Tarxien auto parts
manufacturer in 1987, the
company had just lost $3.5
million and was close to
bankruptcy.
Just seven years later, the
Finley Ave. firm, -which makes
moulded plastic parts such as
door handle assemblies, trim and
grills for General Motors cars
and trucks, is turning a profit.
That in a nutshell is why the
49 -year-old rubber chemist and
business graduate has been
named one of 25 finalists for the
Ontario region Entrepreneur of
the Year awards.
Winners in seven categories
will be announced at a banquet in
October in Toronto. Award
recipients will earn a spot in
Who's Who in Canadian
Business and coverage in
Canadian Business magazine.
Mr. Zarboni is one of three
finalists in the Turnaround
Entrepreneur category, largely
because of Tarxien's much -
improved financial profile.
When I bought the company
it was insolvent," explains Mr.
Zarboni, former national sales
manager for insulating materials,
chemicals and silicones at
Canadian General Electric.
"The company had a good
track record for 25 years as a
family-owned business. But
when the owners sold out it was
taken over by some financial
people who knew nothing about
the business," he explains.
Mr. Zarboni, who was
president of Complax, an
automotive sheet moulding
manufacturer in Cobourg, was
approached by a shareholder of
Tarxien about taking over the

company in 1986.
Realizing the firm's potential,
Mr. Zarboni led a merger of
Complax and Tarxien to form
Tarxien Corp., which would later
purchase the Stellar paint and
finishing company in Concord.
The first thing Mr. Zarboni
did after taking over the Ajax
company was divest it of several
subsidiary firms unrelated to the
auto parts moulding business.
"We concentrated on more
high-tech products," he says.
Secondly, Mr. Zarboni put in
place a new management team
made up of plastic experts, many
of whom also had worked for
CGE.
When the company passed the
break-even point back in 1991,
new technology such as injection
moulding and measurements
testing machines and state-of-
the-art computer design
equipment was purchased.
The use of new technology is
one of the reasons Tarxien Corp.
has been able to meet more
demanding customer
requirements at a time of
increased competition throughout
the auto manufacturing industry.
As a result, the company was
recently awarded a 524 -million
contract to produce exterior roof
trim for a GM division product
which should keep the firm's
employees very busy in the
months ahead.
Tarxien Corp. president Ralph Zarboni is all smiles after being named one of 25 finalists for the Ontario
Entrepreneur of the Year award. Tarxien, located on Finley Ave. in Ajax, produces moulded plastic auto
parts such as handle assemblies, door trim and grills for General Motors.
Tarxien Corp. now has annual
sales of $68 million and employs
500 people at three facilities. But
the ultimate goal is to reach sales

AJAX - A battle for first place
between the top two teams in a
local soccer league ended in a tie
last week.
The Ajax Gallant Wildcat

The teams are now tied for first

It was the third league meeting
this season between the twc
squads, with Scarborough winning
the first 5-1 and Ajax the second
1-0. The loss is the only time the
Wildcats have been beaten in
league play this year.
In the game last week,
Scarborough led 1-0 at the half,
but Candace Chapman tied the
match at the beginning of the
second half, when she took the
opening kick-off and threaded her
way through the defence to score.
While the tie was a result of
solid team play, outstanding
efforts were turned in by forward
Aisha Humphrey, midfielder
Hilary Ilesp and defensive players
Jenny McDermott and Christine
Axe.
Warriors under -15
girls win, lose and tie
AJAX - Three games at a
tournament last weekend resulted
in a win, a tie and a loss for the
Ajax Warriors Mr. Greek girls'
select under -15 team.
In the squad's first game at the
Etobicoke Select )louse League
Tournament, Ajax tied Dixie 1-1.
The Warriors' goal was scored in
the first half by Missy Taylor
before Dixie knotted the affair in
the second half.
Turning in solid games for
Ajax were Cathy Walton, Laura
Markovic, Lindsay Anderson,
Sarah Kilgour, Emma Ito, Taylor
and goalkeeper Erin Shirbon.
Ajax doubled Unionville 2-1 in
its second game, with goals scored
by Taylor, on a penalty kick, and
Anderson, who drilled a shot from
30 feet out. Walton played another
strong defensive game, while
Kilgour. Anderson and Christine
Lasseter controlled the midfield.
Ito. Taylor and Andrea Brown
played hard up front and Shirbon
was again solid in goal.
In their third game, the
Warriors held a territorial
advantage over Erin Mills, but fell
1-0 and were eliminated from the
tourney. The Erin Mills' goal
came on a penalty kick with 15
minutes left in the game.
Excellent efforts were turned in
by Shirbon in goal, defenders
Walton, Jessie Knowles and
Markovic, midfielders Lindsay
Taylor, Kilgour, Lasseter and
Katie Wheler. Forwards Ito,
Missy Taylor, Jennifer
McDougall, Brown and Lindsay
Howell tried their best but

Goldplating service for imports, domestics
The term "car accessorizing" has taken on a new
meaning.
In its most refined context, it refers to a work of
art: adding a touch of class with a touch of gold.
Jim and Rebekah Garland of J.R. Enterprises in
Ajax, offer this genuine, 24 -karat, `touch of gold'
service. Even the most modest car takes on a
dynamic appearance with this J.R.'s innovative
goldplating system, as an increasing number of
car owners are personalizing their vehicles. And
while the goldplating creates that special look,
you'll be pleasantly surprised to discover that it
can cost as little as $149.00.
As Jim explains it, the system is suitable for
-anything chrome" or stainless steel,
consequently, goldplating the emblems on your
car enhances the appearance. Similarly, the
antenna and grille add that hint of classic
elegance.
The system was developed in the United States,
and came to Canada two years ago.
J.R. Enterprises offers a mobile service, which
means the unit is brought to your site. And there
:are other conveniences:
"We don't have to take anything off the car,"
Jim says.
The three -stage process is fast as well as
efficient. The first part of the process removes the
chrome, the second part. in essence, activates the
nickel so the gold will bond to the nickel, and the
final part is applying the gold. Bonding takes
place instantly.
Jim explains further that while the process itself
is relatively speedy, the person applying the
product needs to be conscious of spending
adequate time to ensure a lasting quality. He
spends time "building up" the gold.
Jim stresses, `"This is one instance where slow is
good - to get the quality. Taking time is very
important at any stage of the process. If you only
spend a short time it will look okay initially but
you will have a problem later."
Owners of Toyotas, Mazdas, Hondas and
Nissans have especially appreciated the product,
which adds further class to their imports. Still, this
goldplating process can be used not only on the
emblems, but on such parts as the antenna or
Jim Garland turns chrome into "gold" with his
mobile Electro plating system.
011e. It can also be applied to any make or model
car.
The basic package - which costs just $149 -
includes Civics, Tercels and Corollos. having a
front and rear emblem plus one designated item
goldplated.
In addition, household items such as picture
frames or kitchen and bathroom fixtures can also
be transformed with this product. Imagine, for a
moment, you're renovating you kitchen. The
faucets work well, although they now look plain
in the newly renovated kitchen. The solution? You
can goldplate your faucets to look like new,
without spending a fortune.
Whether you are interested in household items
or a vehicle, Jim and Rebekah will gladly answer
questions about the product and the efficient
process it entails. Although they do work for
dealerships, they are happy to cater to individuals.

When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also
receives a full feature story, complete with pictures.
The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its

overview.
Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff:
