These are just a few of the many perils facing Ontario Riding candi- dates as they go door-to-door in the relentless pursuit of voter -support in the Oct. 25 election. On a recent rainy morning, Ontario Riding incumbent MP Rene Soctens elects to canvass an apartment building on Radom St. in Pickering in an effort to convince residents to vote Progressive Con- servative. Of the approximate dozen resi- dents Mr. Soetens finds at home, most are noncommittal about who'll they'll be supporting in the Oct. 25 election, but all are polite. "You absolutely have my sup- port," says the first woman to engage him in conversation. "Your off -ice has been very helpful. Thank you for your support when I needed it." More often, however, after giv- ing his pitch, he's met with com- ments such as. -I'll keep that in mind." Not once does anyone criti- cize the Tories to Mr. oetcns's face. -We're quite interested in what you have to say.- says an elderly woman who approaches him in the hall. Later. in a stroll an Antonio St - Mr. Soetcns encounters a man who clearly gives an impression of being unimpressed with the Tones. But. although he smirks and shakes his head while glancing over Mr. Soctens's litemiure. the man refus- es an invitation to ask a question. -I have too manN questions. - Liberal Party hopeful Dan SIcTeague has had more problems with dogs than voters. Mr. McTeague began door-to- door canvassing last year after his selection as the Ontario Riding Lib- cral candidate and in that time he's been bitten twice, both times on the hand. LETr1`ry_".,RS TO THE EDITOR Another Love C a 19 0 To the editor, Re: Ajax water plant another 'Love Canal"! In the mid -'50s, a small group of citizens vainly tried to prevent the Love Canal residential community from being built close to a ditch containing 22,000 tones of toxic chemical waste. In the early -'90s, a small group of Ajax citizens are trying to prevent the location of the intake for the new Ajax water supply plant from being so close to the huge tritium -producing Pickering nuclear station. Is there a parallel here? It took 20 years before U.S. authorities acknowl- edged the Love Canal resi- dents were experiencing abnormally high rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and cancer. The Pickering nuclear plant just got up to full production in 1990, and the 1991 AECB, report already shows Pickering has 85 per cent higher Downs Syndrome babies than in the rest of Ontario. Scary. The Love Canal deadly ooze couild be seen, smelled, and tasted. However, the trickle of tritium in our drinking water is invisible, odorless, and tasteless. It also cannot be purified out of the water, and scientists are concerned that prolonged drinking of small amounts increases the risk of cancers by gradually settling in the brain, breast and lymph tis- sues. The U.S. has spent S250 million to try to correct its Love Canal mistake. The long term health-related costs of tritium -induced ill- nesses could make that look like a nit. Wake up, Ajax and Pickering. Bob Willard, Ajax Stompin' Tom for PM To the editor, In his letter of Sunday, Sept. 5 Brian Den - sham suggests that the Reform Party of Cana- da represents a calm national return to what democracy once was (I must have been on vacation that day). I would like to suggest that the chances of an ultra right wing party being chosen to lead this country are remote in the extreme. The upcoming election will be fought out as usual, between the Conservatives and Lib - cab and the Conservatives will be trying to live down their past and the Liberals appar- endy have no plans for the future. It should be an interesting race. In fact, if Stompin' Tom Connors threw his hat into the ring as leader of an "All Canadian Party- he woLdd win going away. Parents "are just saying NO to buying their children's bus pass- es," states a flyer announcing a protest at Pine Ridge Secondary School on Liverpool Rd. N. Fri- day from 8 a.m. "until we're heard." The flyer is being distributed by parents opposed to the Durham Board ot Education's decision to eliminate free bus ser- vice in those municipalities where a full public transit system exists. (It will save almost S525,000 a year by cutting bus- ing in Pickering alone.) The monthly passes cost $38 and are too much on top of such other expenses as textbooks, gym clothes, binders, locks and lunch money, as well as municipal, provincial and federal taxes, the flyer notes. Glynis Bums is among those parents "appalled" at the cancel- lation of busing. "As a single parent withl a mortgage, with no support from a spouse, I am appalled at being asked to put more money into th I s bottomless tax pot," she wrote in a letter to the editor which appeared in Friday's News Advertiser. After holding tight to a 1-0 lead through most of the game, the Panthers saw it slip away as Kingston scored three consecutive third -period goals to claim a 3-2 victory in the inaugural game of the 1993-94 Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League season schedule. The contest was part of the league's annual College Weekend slate of games at the North York Centennial Arena on the weekend. "A couple of rn 'dget mistakes cost us," says Panthers general manager Jim Bricknell. The Panthers opened the scor- ing in the first period as Igor Majesky, a veteran player brought over from the Richmond Hill Riot, scored to give Pickering the early lead * Pickeringi A s s i s t i n 9 were Ajax minor hockey grads Jean PANTH Amyot and EM team captain Melro Junior Frank%., Hockey Club Kavanagh. The slim Pickering edge stood up until early in the third period when Tyson Biss scored for Kingston. ne Voyageurs scored two more goals to take a 3-1 lead at the midway point of the final frame. The Panthers managed one more goal by another Ajax minor hockey grad, Graham Horne, at 13:37 of the final stanza to close out the scoring. Kavanagh and Stephen Koechlin drew assists. In a departure from past years, the Panthers are relying heavily on local talent to get the job done this season. ccording to Bricknell, the team has only two players from the Metro Toronto Hockey League in the line-up this season. The majority of players are gradu- ates of the Ajax, Pickering and Whitby minor hockey systems. The Panthers play their first home game of the season against the Caledon Canadians at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Friday, Oct.
