The youths raised more than S 1,600 in pledges and turned the funds over to Samaritan's Purse, a relief organization with an orphanage in Somalia. During the fast, about 50 young people gathered at the church to hear a speech by the executive director of Samaritan's Purse and some stayed all night to play sports while "starving". On the advice of the Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Pickering council Monday postponed making a decision on how much money taxpayers here should contribute toward the forest purchase. Earlier, the MTRCA had asked Pickering to deter- mine how much it could chip in to save about 53 hectares of the forest from development. They were to pore over a special budget com- mittee's proposals to make cuts in 20 areas to save $4.5 million, Durham chairman Gary Herrema said Wednesday. No regional department was either exempt from or targeted for cuts going into Thursday's meeting at Thunderbird Golf Club in north Whit- by. Local politicians were forced to look at slash- ing expenditures when the provincial government cut S2.5 million in unconditional grants to Durham after the Region's 1993 budget had been set. (The provincial cuts were made to get Ontario's deficit below $10 billion this year.) The estimated 55.5 million cost to the Region for the proposed social contract and how Durham was to pay for it wasn't on the agenda yesterday, Mr. Herrema said. The Region's 1993 budget brought with it a tax increase of 3.5 per cent. Without further cuts to the budget, regional taxes would have to rise another nine per cent to make up for reduced provincialspending- While reluctant to discuss specific cuts, Mr. Herrema did say Durham Regional Police and the Blue Box recycling program would be affected. The recycling program would see "cutbacks, but not the total elimination," while police are "going to be forced to come up with substantial amounts of money." Results of yester'day's meeting will be dis- cussed by Durham's finance and administration committee Wednesday, June 16, at 10 a.m., in Room B-15 at the Region headquarters in Whitby. He intro- duced a private member's bill to that effect in the House of Commons Wednesday. "This legis- lation would allow an employee to Rene Soetens enter into their own contractual arrangements with the government," says Mr. Soetens. "During the last federal public service strike, I was con- tacted by many public servants who said they did not agree with the stand taken by the Public Ser- vice Alliance of Canada." The bill is a "right-to-work" legislation that would grant employees the freedom to make their own decisions about joining or quitting a union, instead of being "compelled to support the union's stand he adds. "Through the freedom of asso- ciation, the individual can make the personal decision to join an employee organization, cease to be a member of an organization, or chose not to join an organiza- tion. The final decision rests with the individual." Mr. Soetens's proposal will be entered into a draw with other private member's bills to deter- mine the order they'll be debated by government. The run wraps up today (June 13) with more than 8,000 kilo- metres covered by 7,000 staff from 120 police and law enforce- ment agencies around the province. Last year, the run raised $525,000 for the Special Olympics, with Durham Region raising $31,200 of that amount. Durham raised the fourth highest amount in the province. Proceeds raised for the Spe- cial Olympics help provide an ongoing year-round program of fitness, recreation and sport for people of all ages who are devel- opmentally handicapped. Special Olympics in Ontario, and in Durham Region, has grown dramatically. Close to 7,000 Ontario citi- zens who are developmentally handicapped are participating in hundreds of programs across the province. In Durham, about 80 Special Olympians participate at various levels of competition. In Durham, the run started at the Hope -Clarke line on the east end of the Region at 9 a.m. Thursday. Runners covered about 64 kilometres and finished up with the torch hand-off to the Metro Toronto Police on the west end of the bridge over the Rouge River in Pickering. Donations in support of the Special Olympics may be made to Sgt. Most of those years were spent at Elizabeth B. Phin Public School in Pickering, where she began teaching almost 25 }ears ago. when the school was named Rouge Hill Public School. She had planned on staying just six months to fill a materni- ty leave. At the time, Mrs. Litherland was raising a family and had been supply teach- ing about 10 years. Before that, she taught eight years in Scarbor- ough. Admittedly, teaching wasn't her first career choice. "As a youngster, I dreamt of selling cabbages at the St. Lawrence Market (in Toronto). I just loved it down there. Then I wanted to work in a restaurant as one of those ladies who carried trays of food over their heads," laughs the long-time Pickering resident. But after spending a summer helping out at a nursery school, Mrs. Litherland's mind was made up. And she still remembers feel- ing "petrified" her first day of teaching, at age 19. Have things changed much since then? "Children are the same as they always were. Once you get them interested in something, they take off. But they need more learning under their belts when they start high school today. Computers weren't even in existence when l started," she recalls. Her favorite time of year? "Spring." Mrs. Litherland answers without hesitation. By then. "Students know, what their tca,: c- . • and won't put up with. You've built up a rap- port and know each other so well. They know how you feel just by the look on your face." What does she enjoy most about children? "The beau- ty of children is their absolute honesty. I've heard, 'What did you do to your hair? It looks funny.' But others will say, 'You look beautiful today.' They don't pull any punches." Still, many can't imagine their teacher anywhere but in the class- room. "They've asked me if I eat, if I live in a house. And their eyes are as big as saucers when they spot me in a shopping mall," she laughs. How is teaching kindergarten unique? "You have to make sure they develop the right attitude about learning and going to school," notes Mrs. Litherland, who recent- ly switched from kindergarten to Grade 3. Cage r +em �ahl�on x "When the bell rings and I have to shovel them out for recess and when they don't want to stay home when they're sick. That's when I know I'm doing things right." Teaching's greatest reward? "When a child comes to you in September needing extra care and attention and in June they've made it. That's the payoff. "I like the idea of personal best," adds Mrs. Litherland. "Don't compare them to someone who's better. Get them enthusias- tic about learning. When instead of getting 49 wrong, they only get 48 wrong, you know they're get- ting better." While Mrs. Litherland hasn't made any definite retirement plans, she'd like to volunteer and may write a book on plays for pri- mary students. An open house will be held in her honor at the school Thursday, June 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. Former students and parents are invited to attend. Donations are being accepted for a retirement gift. Police the world over are a concerned and caring lot -- concerned about the helpless victims of crime, caring enough to want to rid the communit) of the vermin who perpetrate heinous acts upon law-abiding citizens. They get little thanks for the job they do even though they do it for you and other decent people I ike you. When was the last time you thanked a cop for giving you a ticket for speeding or not wearing a seatbelt' You should, of course, because they do it not only to punish you but to protect you ... to save your life. The men and women in blue also rarely get job satisfaction from the judi- cial system that's supposed to serve you. Police officers get as upset as the general public, possibly even more so, when some low -life criminal is able to avoid conviction on a technicality, when a scum -of -the -earth killer or rapist is paroled before his prison term is over only to kill or rape again. Its a thankless job that our cops do -- serving and protecting you, risking their lives to do so. It's our police, not our politicians, who champion the cause of the average Joe, the law-abiding citizens who are too often becoming the innocent victims of scumbag criminals. And, when cops aren't out there working on behalf of victims of crime, they're busy trying to help other victims. Like on Thursday, for example, when more than 200 local law enforcement types were pounding the pave- ment for victims of a cruel twist of fate -- the developmentally handicapped. While I don't dispute the fact that the costs of recycling are high, recycling cannot be an option — it is a must. We cannot just keep accumulating our garbage and pretend it'll somehow disappear. Let's be a little creative in addressing the problem rather than just once again blame someone else, i.e. the provincial govern- ment. Was Mr. Herrema not around when the recent provincial budget was presented. They cer- tainly do not have the money. He would do well to read an article in the Toronto Star, June 2, which discusses North York's thoughts on recycling. Like every municipality they are also finding "it's just too expensive... Nobody can afford it". However, the article goes on to say "We can't just walk away... We'll never be able to build that momentum up again..." Laura Freeman, Pickering Good luck To the editor, As a volunteer for several years with Ajax minor sports this week- end I saw it rewards. In hockey this year I will be the OMHA rep for the AUMHA. This weekend was the draft for the OHL held in London, Ont. My husband, Cliff Long, a panther scout and I attend this event. Six hundred and twenty-nine young men from across Canada and the USA had the opportunity to be picked up in the draft. While I looked for the sport section in today's newspaper it only listed the top 16. Disappointed, I thought It was worth mentioning our local players from Ajax and Pickering. Ajax had Dave Duerden, a 16 - year -old, and Ryan Lowe from the Ajax/Pickering Midget Triple AAA team on this draft list. Ryan Lowe was picked by Kingston; Dave had to be picked up in first three rounds as he is under age. Dave was not picked but had a busy weekend as he attended the under -17 camp in London, Ontario along with Eric Vorstadt from the Ajax/Pickering Bantam AAA team. Out of 629 players, Ryan was picked up in the 6th round. From the Pickering Panthers Jason Reesor and Ryan Connolly both made the draft list. Jason was picked in the 4th round by Nia- gara Falls, and Ryan in the 11th round by Sudbury. Out of 629 players only 256 would be draft- ed. Good luck to all the above young men. If so, you may be interested in an environmental science field course being offered for the fifth time by the Durham Board of Edu- cation. The hands-on course empha- sizes field work at Scugog's Non- quon Environmental Education Centre, Pickering's Seaton Trail and Claremont Environmental Education Centre and Whitby's Lynde Shores. Students will carry out pond and soil studies and examine national park policy among other things. They must arrange their own transportation to Nonquon, though staff will assist in arranging car pools wherever possible. (Visits to other sites are deemed field trips and transportation will therefore be provided by the board.) The course also features a mandatory four-day field trip to the Bruce Peninsula National Park from July 12 to 15, which will cost about $75. The Grade 10, advanced -level course, begins July 5 and runs from 9 am. to 3 p.m. each week- day until July 29. It's restricted to students already in high school. Swimming its routine to the music from Joseph and the Amazing Technicol- or Dreamcoat, the Oshawa Synchro's junior team (aged 15 to 17 years) finished 11th out of 17 squads at the nationals at Montreal's Claude Robillard Pool. Achieving a score of 80.04, the juniors placed 10th in their routine. They finished lith in the compulsory figures, giving them an 11 th-place finish overall.
