The four workers — three men and a woman — were clean- ing up at O'Tooles, 1790 Liver- pool Rd. S, around 2:15 a.m. When one of the men exited the rear door to take out the garbage, he was confronted by a masked man armed with what appeared to be a handgun. The robber held the gun to the man's head and walked him back into the restaurant where he "demanded cash — which he was given", says Durham Regional Police constable Jim Grimley. "He walked all four employ- ees into a walk-in cooler. They waited until they thought it was safe and then carne out and called • police." The thug is described as a black male, dressed in black, including black gloves and a black balaclava. An Oshawa couple and their 15 -month-old child were east- bound on Hwy. 401 around 7:30 P.M. Oct. 24 when a pumpkin fell • from the overpass at Harwood Ave in Ajax, shattering the wind- shield of their 1989 Plymouth Horizon. The driver, 27 -year-old Jef- frey Marlow, was momentarily knocked out and his wife, Susan, had to act quickly to reach over and steer the car until it came to a stop near Lakeridge Rd. The impact broke Mr. Mar - low's nose and he was taken by ambulance to Whitby General :Hospital. The Marlows had noticed four kids on the overpass. Whitby OPP Constable Gerry Smith says the Crime Stoppers tip allowed police to track down "a group of young kids around 15 I* years of age" who lived just north f th C LJ 0 W e overpass. The teenagers told police the pumpkin they'd removed from a nearby home was accidentally dropped off the bridge by a cou- ple in the group who were jostling. "The intent is to push the government to make a commit- ment to these lands," says Lloyd Thomas, chairman of Pickering - Ajax Citizens' Together (PACT) for the Environment. '"The idea that they're Iooking at dumps and airports on these lands is ridiculous." Surely, Mr. Brenner does not expect Chief Stewart to defy council and break Town bylaws and policies in order to hire a fire- fighter (which he can't do any- way by order of the council). So why in the world is Mr. Brenner assisting Marlene Lam- bert, an Ajax resident, to lay charges against Pickering with the Human Rights committee because she wasn't hired for a job, which wasn't available in the first place ( by order of council), and for which she was automatically inel- igible (residency bylaw)? For the life of me, I cannot understand why Mr. Brenner insists on dragging Pickering through the mud. The incident occurred at the town hall when chief Steve Stew- art was pulled out of a meeting by councillor Maurice Brenner, who had a CBC reporter waiting. "I walked into his office and the next thing I know, there's a reporter and camera in my face," says chief Stewart. "I was upset and disappointed. I was in a state of shock." Mr. Brenner was being inter- viewed by the reporter on the case of Marlene Lambert, an Ajax woman who's complained to the Human Rights Commission over Pickering's hiring practices. Mrs. Lambert says she's been trying for years to get a job as a Picker- ing firefighter and was never told about the town's policy that fire- fighters must be residents. Mr. Brenner started investigat- ing her concerns earlier this year as acting mayor. Chief Stewart says he felt put on the spot by Mr. Brenner's College offers new programs DURHAM - Want to learn something new this winter? "I wondered, 'how do I get out of here and not create a problem for Pickering?' I was in a state of shock. I didn't know what to say ... I don't hire people. Council hires people." Mr. Brenner says he's written the chief a letter "to say I'm very sorry and I deeply regret putting him in a situation he has no con- trol over ... it was insensitive of me." It's true that hiring policies are not within the chief's jurisdiction, Mr. Brenner acknowledges. "I agree it was not a fair position to put him in as fine chief." He says fie only meant to suggest the chief tell the reporter "no comment" in person, rather than send the mes- sage through Mr. Brenner. However, Mr. Brenner says he has no regret oveir trying to help Mrs. Lambert. "I'm not trying to get her a job. I want her to be able to compete under her own steam." Mr. Brenner says he believes that, under the Human Rights code, he as a councillor is obli- gated by law to cooperate with Mrs. Lambert and respond to her concerns. The incident Friday has prompted mayor Wayne Arthurs to ask staff to prepare a formal response for the Human Rights Commission in regard to Mrs. Lambert's complaint. Regional councillors will consider giving themselves a medical coverage plan, while also studying the idea of a pension for politicians who retire or are defeated in an election. Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson, who heads a com- mittee studying the plan, says the benefits would recognize the fact that being a Regional Councillor is no longer a part- tirne job, but a full-time one. "These benefits are the same service any other employee receives," Council- lor Nicholson says. "Don't forget, councillors have kids The medical coverage is closer to becoming reality Ulan the pension plan, which remains at the "idea" stage. A motion currently before the Regional finance and administration committee rec- ommends Durham's elected officials be included in the medical plan available to all Regional employees. That plan includes life insurance and dental and hospital cover- age - Councilor Nicholson says including councillors in the medical plan would only add 1 per cent, or $40,000, to the $4 - million bill the Region now pays for the plan. Before a pension can be considered, Regional Council must give its support for the Study. Jerry Amernic wrote the book Victims: The Orphans of Justice following the 1980 rape and mur- der of Mr. Sullivan's daughter Pamela by a man who had been out of prison 13 days without supervision and without the police knowing he was free. Mr. Sullivan, co-founder of the support group Victims of Violence, has since waged a suc- cessful fight with the federal government to change the Parole Act and the Penitentiary and Reform Act. The Ajax resident will run for federal office in Ontario Riding, which covers Pickering, Ajax and most of Whitby. The former Metro police officer is critical of the Young Offenders Act and believes the criminal justice sys- tem should be harder on violent offenders and drunk drivers. Think Reuse before you shop. "Recycling Together" is a group of three charities in the Ottawa area sharing a location which diverts large quantities of textiles from landfill. Conceived as a unique recycling idea two years ago, Ottawa Neighborhood Services, St. Vincent de Paul Society and The Salvation Army with financial assistance of the federal and provincial govern- ments, purchased capital equip- ment, selected a site and brought a plant into operation. The operation provides cloth- ing to the needy in the Ottawa/Carleton area and makes clothing available at bargain prices to those with fixed or limit- ed incomes. It also generates rev- cnue for the sponsoring charities from the sale of clothing with which to fund charitable and reha- bilitation programs. Recycling Together furnishes textile brokers with a supply of mixed cloth which provides clothing to for- eign countries as well as retrieves and recycles natural fiber (wool, cotton) and synthetic fibers for upholstery wadding. Recycling Together currently has achieved an operating level of approximately 25,000 pounds of material per day. Clothing dona- tions to the charities, curbside tex- tile pick-up by Laidlaw as part of the city of Ottawa's blue box pro- gram and a growing involvement by local industries, businesses and institutions provide Recycling Together with material to process. The initial sort identifies which items can be used by the three charities locally and diverts these items to the second sort area. Clothes which can be sold in thrift stores or given away are separated into about 50 different categories. The material which does not go to stores is baled and sold to clothing brokers in Toronto, Montreal or New York. Clothing is then resorted for various recycling uses in the rag trades and for shipment overseas. The highly -motivated 30 -mem- ber staff was amalgamated from the three charities and has learned to work together efficiently to accomplish what has been achieved to date. Teachers use an electronic mail box to update information daily, then parents or students can access the mail box by using a code. This is the first system of its kind in Canada. Victoria Haddrall of Telcorps says the service is only a couple weeks old, and neither the Durham Board of Education nor the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board has purchased it "at the present time". Homework by Phone is part of Telcorps' integrated communica- tion system. Ms Haddrall says York Region School Board is a customer of Telcorps and is using some of its other services. "Some school boards are in a good position to add this (Home- work by Phone)," she says. Mess ermizing at competition AJAX - Members of the Susan Messmer Dance Academy kicked up their heels at the recent Dance America competition. Of the 14 entries the school sent to the Michigan event, seven placed first, three second and two third. And, 11 qualified for the Dance America national finals in Orlando, Florida in June, 1993. "There was really stiff compe- tition. The kids were so worried, they felt they didn't have a chance," says Susan Messmer. The competition was for youths from 11 to 19 years. Six of the firsts were turned in by groups, while Lindsay Mess - mer was tops in the Intermediate tap solo for 14 to 16 year olds. Lindsay also qualified for the Miss Dance Olympus, which will be held in Orlando during the Dance America final. Also finishing first were the senior tap group, junior tap, inter- mediate jazz, senior ballet, junior ballet and lyrical (ballet and jazz combined). Jennifer Campbell was second in the junior ballet solo. while Emily Mairs was second in the junior tap solo and Mairs and Campbell second in jazz duet. The senior jazz group was third, alone with Lisa Gibson in the intermediate solo ballet. The Mazda RX -7 was the top vote -getter in its class at the 1991 awards and its merits were going to be hard to match, nevermind beat. It is not like we are compar- ing apples and oranges here. A performance car must be judged for what it is supposed to be. It is more like comparing last year's apples to this year's crop. ADAC members had a variety of fruit to choose from. The crop included the Audi S4, the BMW 325is. the Dodge Viper RT/]0, the Honda Prelude SR -V and the Porsche 928 GTS. The Corvette ZR 1 dropped off the tree before harvest time, when General Motors decided to drop out of the Cars of the Year awards prior to the Shannonville event. Drawing the most attention was Chrysler's roadster. The Viper is an impressive piece of machinery, all V 10 and 400 horsepower of it. The car is also beautifully sculpt- ed, with its smooth lines and California -styling. But drawing attention and drawing votes are two different things. If they wanted to drive the Viper. ADAC members were allowed to take the roadster out for a brief drive with a Chrysler repre- sentative tagging along for the ride. One autowriter was overheard IWaying. "Chrysler doesn't neces- sarily thinks they'll win this class. They just wanted to have the car here to show it off." Fair enough. NEXT! With the Corvette absent and the Viper simply along for show, the Best New Performance Car class was down to a four -horse race. All but outclassed in the field € was Honda's SR -V version of the Prelude. Honda's variable valve timing and lift electronic control (VTEC), two-stage intake system propels the Prelude SR -V along f; 1 with 190 horses and the car has its merits, but whether it runs along with the big boys remains to be seen. And then, there were three. Combining lux- urious interiors and performance capabilities in one car is an accomplishment by any standard. But many a driving enthusiast wants a performance car that not only puts its numbers where the road is, but also looks the part. For unparalleled driving sensa- tion. Porsche is one of the front runners. The 928 GTS is a Porsche all the way. The hand -assembled 5.4 -litre. aluminum -alloy V8 engine pro- duces 345 horsepower and it can be mated to a five -speed manual or a four -speed automatic, which makes the 928 GTS the fastest production sports car in the world with an automatic transmission. It will be quite interesting to see which car will be selected as the best in the performance class at the Cars of the Year awards.
