"I've talked with people who are not in favor of it, but with everything that's new that comes out there are people with resistance to change." Mike O'Connor, past president of the Durham elementary division of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association, says he's heard discussion about whole language but nothing strongly negative. Mr. O'Connor says much of the problem stems from people who cannot accept change. As an example, he says, "right now a lot of children maybe go home with their maih books and ask their parents for help. And when they asked their parents, their parents didn't know how to do it because it's a differ- ent approach to it." He says some parents and teachers think "'I was taught this way. I feel I learned. Therefore it's right.' "It is difficult to change," says Mr. O'Con- nor. -The concept of whole language — they think we've gone away from the traditional aspects of teaching, but they're still in place." But, two teachers called to say they have concerns about the whole language method. Neither would go on the record with their comments, for fear of being considered dis- loyal. Police say the woman was in a car with her boyfriend at Beach Point Promenade and West Shore Boulevard shortly after midnight when a fox walked slowly in front of their vehicle. When the couple got out of the car to take a closer look at the animal it lunged at the woman, biting her shoe. The bite, howev- er, did not penetrate to her skin. The fox, which lingered in the area, showed all the signs of having rabies and was shot by police. Animal control officers sent the carcass to Agriculture Canada for testing, says Ross Balbimie, manager of the Pickering -Ajax -Whitby (PAW) Animal Control centre. PAW has not yet received results of the tests. There have been two confirmed cases of rabid animals in Durham region this year, Why Advertise In Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being a part of the Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has it advantage. "Everything's gone," says Nancey McCormick, who had planned on spending the month of January there after the birth of her child. "We knew they had nothing left after hearing the eye of the hurricane went through Homestead" with winds hitting 160 miles an hour and a tidal surge 11 -and -a -half -feet high. Her parents, who were at their home in Oakville when they heard the devastating news, weren't prepared for the loss because reports suggested the hurricane would hit Fort Laud- erdale, which is further north than Homestead. "Tears stream down my mom's face when she's watching (destruction scenes on) TV," says Mrs. McCormick, a sales representative with the News Advertiser. "I think everything's finally sunk in." Still, Mrs. McCormick's par- ents "consider themselves lucky that none of their friends were hurt. The things they lost can be replaced, except for a few senti- mental things. You have to feel for the people who actually live there." Her father and a handful of friends from southern Ontario are on their way to Florida to assess the damage. FROM PAGE 1 An Ajax resident for about a month, Mr. McTeague, 29, has been active in the Liberal Partv since 1978, having worked on many campaigns. Ontario Riding covers Picker- ing, Ajax and most of Whitby and is cun-cntly represented by Com;er- vauve MP Rene Soetens. In accepting the nomination. Mr. McTeague said, "Victory has many fathers. Defeat is an orphan. Mr. Soetens, you're going to be a lonely child after the next election." A federal election will be held this fall, he predicts. In his speech before the ballot- ing, Mr. NicTeague said, "The next election is the very last chance for Canada." He said the free trade deal with the U.S. should be renegotiated, or cancelled if necessary. "I say to you, the Canada of today will be no more if the Free Trade Agreement remains in place much longer." Mr. McTeague would "encour- age retail spending and bex+st con- sumer confidence by scrapping the GST and replacing it with a " fair and progresi % c tai <) stem." "There arc fewer failures in whole language. Children move at their own rate. There's not the pres- sure on children to have every sen- tencc grammatically correCL" When asked how children know if something is wrong when spelling and grammar are not marked, Mr. Butcher says, "Eventually students develop that skill. Children may write about a topic of special inter- est to the class and mad a variety of good books, rather than reading about Dick and Jane and answering questions about them." She said there's a "widely -held misconception" that teachers no Ionizer use phonics. "It is one of a variety of tech- niques that good teachers use to help young children read," she said. "Teachers now have many more techniques than they had in previous years because they have more extensive training.;. "We know that different people learn differently, and it would be a shame to go back to the old days, when children's individual needs were less importanL" Nis ming said a recent review of student writing conducted in Grades 6 and 10 at public schools here shows the success of the new meth- ods. The impact of head on pavement, or lamp post, or car body, can be fatal, and if not fatal can have very serious consequences for the crashed cyclist who is not wearing a helmet. Parents should buy helmets for their children at the same time they buy their first bike. The first lesson when those parents are teaching their chil- dren how to ride should be about how to strap on a helmet. And adults should set an example for their children by wearing them themselves. But should there be a law? There are precedents: both the seat belt law and the legislation making motorcycle helmets mandatory have the goal of protecting people despite themselves. The result of those laws has been mostly positive -- a biker without a helmet is a rare sight, and usage of seat belts has increased. But seat belt use is not universal -- there are still people who go to any length to avoid using them, and there are still reports of accidents where drivers and their passengers have been thrown from their vehicle because they weren't wearing belts. The difference between the helmet and seat belt laws, and the secret of their varying degrees of success, is enforcement. A biker who is not wear- ing a helmet stands out- A driver who is not wearing a seat belt cannot be detected until stopped for some other offence -- in other words, enforce- ment is spotty, and drivers know it. Some even refuse to wear belts because there is a law. Should people be forced to protect themselves rather than just encour- aged to? Yes. Despite common sense, people didn't start wearing seat belts or motorcycle helmets in great numbers until the law told them to. Only then did the number of serious injuries begin to substantially decrease. The big question is how to enforce such a law. How does a police officer give a 14 -year-old a ticket? Do we licence cyclists and demand they carry identification? These questions and many others remain to be answered. Unenforceable? Maybe. A deterrent? Most definitely. The Conservative party through its endorse- ment of this alternative has thrown a life -line to the drowning man. The PCs purport to be lobbying the NDP govern- ment to explore all options. Yet, it's only promoung this one option and encouraging gratis roots organi- zations to embrace it One can only wonder why the PCs have decided to further the interests of this par- ticular proposal? bage no solution wasteful society The Kirkland Lake option was crafted by Metro, and designed to keep Metro the only game in town. I can foresee that if this were to occur, Kirkland Lake would get the garbage, !Metro would reap thy profits, and Durham and York would pay the tab. However, some animals can pose problems if they decide to set up camp in your attic, garage, toolshed or chimney in between their daily forages to and from your vegetable garden. Trying to coax a frightened animal out of your home can be difficult -- not to mention dangerous. There's also the possibility that it could become trapped in between the walls of your house before you are able to find and set it free. By adequately "pest -proofing" your home. you can help prevent rodents, raccoons and birds from gaining access in the first place. You can do this more easily in the summer and fall, because you can comfortably access pest -prone areas of your home and make repairs more readily. Bar Possible Entry The easiest way to prevent inquisitive little visitors from gaining a firm foothold in your home is to make sure you don't provide them with an easy point of entry. To start with, it's a good idea to keep tree branches clear of your roof. to discourage neighborhood squirrels and raccoons from using it as a local thoroughfare. Take a good look around your house to sec how close branches actually are to your rooftop. If you have particularly large trees that are difficult to trim, you may want to hire some professional tree trimmers. It's also important to check your roof periodically throughout the year to make sure it's in a good state of repair. Animals like squirrels and raccoons can gain access through missing shingles or decayed roof boards. Also check around 4t, for any loose siding that animals might be able to pry open. And, to protect your chimney from becoming a second home to creatures who enjoy the view, have a chimney cap installed. These are quite effective and inexpensive. Once the cap is installed, monitor it throughout the year to make sure it doesn't become clogged with leaves or other rubbish. Look for Cracks & Holes It's also a good idea to check your home's exterior for large cracks or holes. Although a small hole may not look like much from the outside, it may provide the perfect doorway to your home. Mice, for instance, only require a small space of about one-half inch to wriggle through. And keep in mind that. in addition to furry little creatures, insects can also g;un reflection ni1m.
