The value of building permits issued
by the town of Pickering so far this year
is up slightly over 1991 figures. About
S56.5 million in permits have bean
issued this year, compared to $54 mil-
lion at this time last year. However, fig-
ures for June, 1992, are far below June
1991 totals. This past June, 513.4 mil-
lion in permits were issued compared to
$23.6 million in June 1991. The statis-
tics include permits for residential,
industrial and commercial projects.

Recession a boon to colle e
It
J FROM PAGE 1
But he. says the college won't
have a problem accommodating all
the students.
"We'll do well," he says. "Our
new wing will be open-, we'll have
two new computer labs and a third
one was recently renovated. It'll be
tight, but we can fit it all in."
Gary Polonsky
The new wing Mr. Polonsky is
referring to is the library expansion.
A new floor has been built above
the library and half of the upstairs
level will be used for classrooms.
Once the college's trades pro-
grams move to the new campus in
Whitby's former Cadbury plant in
1993, those classrooms will open
up to other students at the college's
main campus, he says, and the need
for classes in the upstairs library
will disappear.
"We are not planning on turning
away students,- says Mr. Polonsky,
except in quota programs such as
dental hygiene, where there are
only 24 spaces and more than 1,000
applicants.
In other programs, such as law
and security, Mr. Polonsky says the
college had to make a judgment call
after getting 800 applications.
"We could Lake in an extra 100
students in law and security, but we
know we couldn't find good jobs
for those students in two years
time,- says Mr. Polonsky. "That's
one instance where we counselled
people away from a program. The
whole world wants to be a cop."
Even though there's a surge in
full-time education, Mr. Polonsky
isn't projecting any huge growth in
part-time and night school students.
"The recession is still on and
people are making a choice
between personal growth and pay-
ing the bills,- he says.
The surge in the number of Stu-
dents coincides with a drop in the
college's record of student employ-
ment after graduation. For the first
time in the college's history, the
number of graduates who got jobs
has slipped to 86 per cent.
"This is the first time we're
below 90 per cent," says Mr. Polon-
sky, pointing to the recession as the
culprit. "But for us to be able to
stay around 90 per cent in this cli-
vim is actually quite graffyingAt
says a lot about the quality and
demand of our saxients."
Mr. Pblonskv doesn't predict a
quick recovery from the recession.
But he says learning is now recog-
nized as one of the three mam uWc-
dients needed to turn the economy
around.

Trade debate
begins anew
Brace yourself for another round of the great free trade debate
between those old adversaries: Tory MPs for Re -Election, and the
Council of Canadians Who Want Everything to Stay the Same.
Both groups will pull out reams of statistics and charts to show, on
the one hand, all the jobs that will be created, and on the other, all the
jobs that will be lost. Both will engage in emotion -tugging speeches
designed to either scare the pants off the audience, or lull the listeners
into serene confidence. Each will accuse the other of being misleading.
The trade agreement arrived at this week by Mexico, the United
States and Canada will end up as an election issue. After the election,
no matter the outcome, each side will claim the majority of Canadians
is on its side.
While the partisans jockey to make their pre-emptive strikes, many
of us find it too early to make definite comment on the deal, because
the details haven't had a chance to sink in, and the implications are a
bit of a mystery. That, however, won't stop either committed propo-
nents or critics from inflammatory rhetoric.
Buzz Hargrove, for example, has already come out firmly against a
deal that he can't possibly know the full implications of. The president
of the Canadian Auto Workers says low-wage Mexican workers will
take jobs away from Canadians under the deal. How they will be able
to do that, after all the barriers Mexico has erected against Canadian
auto parts come down, isn't clear.
The consensus is that freer trade is better for everyone; most nations
on earth are moving forward under that assumption. Whether the recent
three-way deal is part of that movement, or a way to sidestep it by
managing trade rather than freeing it, will be discovered soon. Let's
wait and see, before we trash it or praise it.

Tories spent, too
To the editor,
Recent headlines in the News
Advertiser and other media made
much of the expense of Queen's
Park MPP's use of accommoda-
tion close to the Legislature and
the use of an OPP helicopter by
the Premier. For the benefit of
your readers, I list the following
waste of Ontario taxpayers' dol-
lars by the dynasty that ruled this
province for 42 years.
— $600 million for 1/4 interest
in Sun Oil Co. (since plunged to a
fraction of its value);
— $50 million to create a luxu-
ry lodge in the wilderness near
Kenora (Manaki Lodge) sold to a
United States' buyer for $3 mil-
lion when nobody could afford to
go there;
— $35 million for an experi-
mental complex in Germany for
rapid transit systems (dropped
suddenly with no explanation);
— No dollar figure ever
released on the cost of sending
hundreds of OPP officers to an
electrical components plant near
London, Ont., to intimidate female
employees on a legal strike — this
good corporate citizen emptied the
plant with transports in the middle
of the night and fled to Mexico as
soon as the "Free Trade Deal"
came into effect;
— In a so-called austerity

Accident victim says thanks
To the editor,
On July 18, 1992 my three-
year-old daughter and I were
involved in a car accident at West-
ney Road and Highway 2 in Ajax
around 10:30 am.
I would like to thank all the
wonderful police, fire department
and ambulance personnel for their
prompt and efficient assistance in
handling the situation. Both of us
were, fortunately, not seriously
hurt but badly shaken up. The
friendly attitude of all these people
helped to calm us down.
As well, several motorists
stopped to check on my daughter
and me to emure we weren't seri-
ously hurt. One young man was
very helpful in opening my car
door that was jammed and in all
the confusion, I was unable to
thank him personally. Special
thanks to Carol and Alan for all
your support and thoughtfulness
towards us. You will not be forgot-
ten.
Please know how much I appre-
ciate your taking time from your
busy day to assist my daughter and
me. I now feel reassured to know
that in a crisis situation, people
really do come together!

(since plunged to a
fraction of its value);
— $50 million to create a luxu-
ry lodge in the wilderness near
Kenora (Manaki Lodge) sold to a
United States' buyer for $3 mil-
lion when nobody could afford to
go there;
— $35 million for an experi-
mental complex in Germany for
rapid transit systems (dropped
suddenly with no explanation);
— No dollar figure ever
released on the cost of sending
hundreds of OPP officers to an
electrical components plant near
London, Ont., to intimidate female
employees on a legal strike — this
good corporate citizen emptied the
plant with transports in the middle
of the night and fled to Mexico as
soon as the "Free Trade Deal"
came into effect;
— In a so-called austerity
move the health minister at the
time (Keith Norton) closed about
14 hospitals in small towns across
Ontario, putting an added strain in
large centres (not to mention trav-
el expense of ailing Ontarians who
had to drive 50 miles or more in

Ajax baseball seniors
hit back in playoff
series with Peterborough
AJAX - The Ajax Upper
Deck senior men's baseball
team broke a deadlock in the
seventh inning to post a crucial
playoff win over Peterborough
in Ajax Thursday night.
The Ajax squad recorded a
four -run seventh inning to
break a 2-2 tie to collect a 7-4
win over Peterborough in the
third game of the best -of -seven
Eastern Ontario Baseball Asso-
ciation (SOBA) senior playoffs.
Back-to-back doubles by Ian
Fletcher and Lance Desroches
opened the inning. They were
driven home by a Steve Wyzin-
ski single.
Wayne Murphy then
slammed a two -run opposite
field home run, his first of the
playoffs, to secure the win at
the Ajax Community Centre
diamond.
Peterborough leads the first-
round series two games to one.
Collins Pullins led the attack
with three hits while Wyzynski
and Deroches had a pair each.
Ajax pitcher Chris Locke
*picked up the win in relief of
starter Pete Babiak. Locke went
3 1/3 innings, giving up four
hits and striking out four.

UPPER DECK NOTES:
August has not been kind to the
Upper Deck seniors as injuries
and holidays have left the
squad, at times, with a
makeshift lineup... Greg
McGuire, Doug Erskine, Dave
Kielly and designated hitter
Mike O'Brien are all away on
holidays and first baseman.
Dave Meredith continues his
rehabilitation on his injured
foot. With several other players
on shift work, manager Pat
Roach has been forced to go
with a play -as -you -come line-
up.
...With thanks to some local
businesses, the Ontario Senior
Men's 'C' Baseball Champi-
onships set for the Ajax Com-
munity Centre Sept. 4 to 7 arc
beginning to take shape. Bill
Harmsworth and Pat Roach
are beginning to finalize the
details for the eight -team tour-
nament. However, they still
have some openings in their
program for any local business-
es which wish to advertise their
products/services for the week-
end. The upper Deck seniors
face a deficit of S3,000 which
they must raise over the next
few weeks in order to host the
tournament. The team would
welcome any assistance anyone
can offer. If you can help, call
Pat Roach at 427-3183.
...Further details on the tourna-
ment itself will be printed in
future editions of the Ajax -
Pickering News Advertiser.

1992-93 Season of Competitive
Swimming & Swim Development
• A success not stress oriented swimming program for children
ages 7 to 13
What makes swimming the better choice?
• Most Canadian Pediatricians recommend swimming as the best
developmental activity for children.
• Our swimming programs use every precious minute of practice time
developing fitness and teaching skills. In other sport programs an hour of
practice may yield as little as 10 minutes of meaningful activity.
• Swimming is the most injury free of all children's sports.
• Through accomplishments in learning and the development of new skills and
fitness, children develop a strong self image.
• Swimming is a sport that will bring children fitness and enjoyment for life.
Master swimming for adults is the fastest growing fitness activity in North
America.
• Can lead to full university scholarships
• The Pickering Swim Club with its professional full-time coaches, offers a
complete range of programs specifically designed to meet your swimmers
needs and capabilities.
