Ajax High School students protesting the suspensan of pc pu- lar law teacher Roy McMurtry, 32, were told Wednesday he will be : allowed to teach with the board again, but not at their school. Mr. McMurtry, the son of for- mer Attorney General Roy ' McMurtry, was suspended with pay last week. The parties involved ! offer conflicting reasons for that s suspension. According to principal Neil Hodgson, Mr. McMurtry's suspcn- sion was 'Piot based upon teacher performance- bus upon an incident involving another staff member at the school last Tuesday. An allegation of minor assault t was made that day by the school's vice-principal against another staff member, but has since been dropped, Durham Regional Police sergeant Sandy Ryrie says. Sergeant Ryrie refused to name either of the parties involved. According to Laurie McMurtry, who spoke on behalf of her hus- band earlier this week, that allega- tion was a "lie" that was "camped . up at the last minute to distract the press. LYe fob outlook here was even less promising last spring, Manpower points out, with 24 per cent expecting staff cut- backs and only 10 per cent planning to hire. According to Manpower, job opportunities appear best in non- durable goods manufacturing, while workforce reductions are fore- cast in durable goods manufacturing and the wholesale/retail trade. Employment fluctuations are expected in construction, transporta- tiow'public utilities and services. Nationally, job prospects are well below historical norms for this time of year with optimism limited to smaller cities, says Manpower. Durham region chairman Gary Henrema was to travel to Toronto this after- noon to meet with federal government officials to discuss the sale of half the lands held by Transport Canada, as announced last week in finance minister Don Mazankowski's budget. Mr. Herrema's suggesting the sale "may have some impact on Hwy. 407." but says the land could also be peddled to the province, municipality or private investors. "Some have said it might be used for housing." he told regional councillors Wednesday. but he noted Mr. k'L'tzankowski "mentioned Downsview for housing, not Pickering." Council votes to put stop to trains parking at crossings PICKFRM - A perked train that delayed firefighters from reaching a burning horse ear- lier this year has prompted council to call for an end to the stopping of trains on level cross- ings. Like the dozen or so people who pleaded with politicians to eliminate any tax hike. saying the current recession was taking its toll on their pock- etbooks. "I can't pay any more taxes," pleaded a senior citizen who's retired and living on a fixed income. Another woman revealed her home was up for sale "and the taxes are part" of the reason. And, the Ontario Taxpayers Coalition is pleased, according to member Janice Frampton. But, the flat -line budget wasn't unanimously supported by council. If fact, it squeaked by in a -i-; vote, with opponents warning the move could mean reduced service levels. For instance, funds to hire four firefighters were eliminated, a move that troubles councillors Eileen Higdon and Kip Van Kempen. it also troubles us. Councillors wouldn't have frozen fire department staff levels without asking the fire chief if he could still protect the public with his current personnel, would they? C, D Provincial Squash Championships this month. Slated for the Pickering Recreation Complex AS March 20 t •0 8- 22, the tour- nament will be run joint:y b,. :hc taw of Pickering and the Pickering Squash Club. More than 150 men and women from across the province will play about 250 matches durme the three-day event. The tournament represents the first time an Ontario men's and women's squash championship has been hosted in Durham region, says event chairman Dave McDonald. "We've had lots of provincial junior ( 19 years and under) cham- pionships over the years." says McDonald, who's also the squash pro at the Pickering club. "R'e specifically asked for this tourna- ment to give the adults sonte- thing. ' McDonald expects the competi- tion to be fierce at the champi- onships, but he's confident local will do well during the event. He notes that -:0 to 50 entrants will he from the Pickering and the Ajax squash clubs. "There's a lot of good players coming." says McDonald. "Thc competition will be really tough. so how (local players) will do remains to be seen. The better local players play in the T & D (Toronto and District) leagues where they play weekly against Toronto -area clubs. Thc T & D players will have a decent chance to do well." The players will come mainly from the squash hotbed of Toronto and area and from London, Peterborough and Belleville. The highest level of competition will come from the men's and women's 'B' divisions. But, the tournament will also introduce an 'E' level of play for both men and women for those who don't play a lot. but still want to compete. "Squash has become so popular that the 'D' players are very good players and have been playing squash for 15 years," says McDonald. The loss, at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium Tuesday night, dropped the Metro Junior 'A' Panthers' record Spartans advance to DYSSAA hockey final PICKERING - The Dunbarton High School Spartans hockey team has been on the losing end of the scores against York Region's Sacred Heart all season long — but, it finally won when it counted. Playing in the Durham -York Secondary School Athletic Association (DYSSAA) semi-final contest against Sacred Heart, the Spartans put together a solid three periods of hockey to win 9-3 at Iroquois Park Arena on Tuesday. "They beat us three times this year, they've been our one nemesis. We haven't been able to beat them," says Dunbarton co -coach Peter Kaiser. "The 9-3 score wasn't the difference between the two teams. All the games we've played them this year have been one -goal games. Our kids played well, we put together a good three periods of hockey." With the Spartans leading 4-1 in the second period, an outstanding save by goaltender Rick Hull deflated the Sacred Heart squad who were poised to make a come- back. Hull made a diving catch on a shot headed into the open side of the net. The Spartans went on to score two more goals in the second stanza to take a comfortable 6-1 lead into the final period.
