GREETER -
W,
• As villain of the
squared circle
I By KEITH GILLIGAti
Staff Reporter
AJAX - For the better part of two
dec:acles, he was hated by just about everyone.
Most people said he had No Class.
He's Bobby Bass, a former professional
wrestler. During his time in the squared circle, he was known
as No Class Bobby Bass.
He was in his teens when he started in the wrestling busi-
ness.
By the time Bass stepped out of the ring, he'd been the
world champion several times. Bass broke into the sport with
'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Randy 'Macho Man' Savage,
fought from Nova Scotia to Florida to British Columbia to
Japan, took on such wrestling giants as Maurice 'Mad Dog'
Vachon, Terry Funk, Harley Race and Rick Flair, and earned
the title "The Most Hated Man in the Maritimes" four years
in a row.
Over the course of his career, Bass separated both shoul-
ders twice, he was stabbed once and he lost plenty of teeth.
To this day, he has "aches and pains like most people
wouldn't realize."
Bass first got into the business when he was about 17.
"I went to the gym to work out with the guys. I learned
and learned and then I went pro. They were teaching me for a
year -and -a -half all the moves and falls.
"I was training seven days a week. They told me I was
ready to go after a year, but I didn't want to go until I felt
comfortable and knew the moves. All the moves are legit."
Bass's first match was in Paducah, Kentucky in the early
1970s. He earned $25 for the night.
"Twenty-five dollars was a lot of money down there. We
worked seven days a week. Some guys didn't show up, so I
fought two or three times a night. I loved the sport."
After fighting throughout Kentucky, Tennessee and
Georgia, he moved to the Tri-State wrestling loop, which
included Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. The Bass Family
tag team was formed, with his brother Donny, and for the
next two years they fought together. "It was nothing but main
events."
The brothers beat Flash and Rocket Monroe to claim the
world tag -team championship.
(Another brother, Ron Bass, fought in the World Wrestling
Federation a few years ago. He would enter the ring dressed
as a cowboy, carrying a bull whip.)
Bobby and Donny eventually split when they started fight-
ing each other out of the ring more than helping each other
inside it. From there, Bobby toured the Maritimes with Piper,
then moved on to Vancouver ("I was supposed to stay three
weeks. I ended up staying three years.' Then, it was off to
Calgary and Japan. He's fought in the National Wrestling
Association (NWA) and the World Wrestling Federation
(WWF).

r
• As greeter at Ajax's
Country Gold bar
Bobby Bass was
hated far and wide
"1 quit the WWF. I wasn't getting no place. Once you get
to a certain level, you're not getting any place. The money
was real good, don't get me wrong, but you get into this busi-
ness to be on top, not to the number three or four spot.
"I did better in the Maritime circuit, Calgary and
Vancouver than in the WWF," says Bass.
Doing well in wrestling can mean a lot of money. "It
depends on where you're on the card. You can make S50 to
$2,000 a week."
During his career, Bass had about three or four years when
he was topping S100,000 (U.S.) a year.
"When 1 was in Pensacola, Florida, I was 21 years old and
I was making $3,000 a week. I went through the money like
s— through a goose. New cars, new clothes. I flew my wife
down on weekends. It was dumb, dumb. l was spending like
crazy."
The game has changed over the years. Moves that would
end a match 15 years ago — body slams, suplexes and on an
opponent from the top ropes — are now common and often
times don't end the match.
Bass fought at between 250 and 265 pounds. "I never took
a steroid in my life. It's unbelievable, those guys (who do use
steroids) are only hurting themselves."
Last year, a doctor in Pennsylvania was alleged to have
supplied steroids to five superstars of the WWF, including
Piper and Hulk Hogan.
The steroid charge is the only scar on Hogan's career, Bass
• As Pacific Coast Champion
says.
"Hogan is the number -one sports
celebrity in the world. He's so popular LJ_
it's unbelievable. You've got to give him
respect for what he's done in the business. So
many kids look up to him."
Bass has met Hogan, but never fought him.
He has fought Piper, Savage and Jake 'The Snake'
Roberts. In fact, Bass's match with Roberts is on the WWF's
greatest matches video.
Back in the late '70s, Bass and Roberts tangled in the
first-ever cage match in Vancouver.
Like Roberts, Bass's forehead is lined with scars from his
wrestling wars. "I've been busted open more times than you
can shake a stick at. Someone asked me how I can keep
going on in a match. It's an adrenaline thing. You don't real-
ize it until the end," he says.
Bass is always asked if the sport is real. "1 say go try it.
Don't knock it until you've tried it. I get it (the question) 24
hours a day."
Despite being out of the ring for about 10 years, Bass is
still recognized, especially in his native Maritimes.
Bass was born in Danmouth, Nova Scotia. One of his
two proudest moments in wrestling was "walking down the
ramp at Maple Leaf Gardens. I managed Sgt. Slaughter and
Kabuki. It was the main event and we sold it out a couple of
times. It was a thrill, being a Canadian fellow and I lived in
Toronto."
The other was setting a record for selling out Halifax
Forum for 22 weeks in a row.
Other highlights include appearances in a couple of
movies, including Sylvester Stallone's Paradise Alley ("It
did s— at the box office. I think it was one of the worst
movies he did."), and being the only non-Japanese wrestler
to beat the Japanese champion.
When he left the sport, he left it on top. "I'm 45 years
old. It wasn't fun any more. My knees were bad. The body
can only take so much abuse. It comes to the point you have
to give it up. If you don't, you make a fool of yourself."
These days, Bass works security and as a greeter at
Country Gold bar in Ajax.
Would he want his kid to take up wrestling? "I'd say get
an education first. I didn't go to high school. I made lots of
money. The thing was I didn't save too much. If you have an
education, you have something to fall back on to. In this
business, you're only as good as your last match."
Bass recalls his only time as a fan favorite.
"I fought 'Crazy' Chris Coat. I lost some teeth. I was in
hospital for a week. They took my teeth out and put a plate
in.
"We had a rematch and it was the first time I heard
cheers. He won the first match, but I won the second time. I
was a good guy for six months."

Living in Fear article
prompts many calls
To the editor,
Just a short note to thank reporter Judi Bobbitt for the article
"Living In Fear" she wrote on our foundation.
It was a great article that has reached many of your readers. We
have received numerous calls over the last week and are still getting
calls. The article has generated a great response in this community,
with over 50 calls so far.
A number of those who have called us were relieved to read that
others suffer from the same problem, thinking they were unique and
alone with their fears, not knowing about our service and that there
was also professional help available, and these disorders can be over-
come.
I wish to extend our sincere thanks to Judi and the News Advertiser
for helping us reach those that are afflicted by these disorders in our
community.

The difference between the ath-
letes and the doctor is of course
"sponsorship" of the athletes —
with megabuck corporations using
their vast resources for advertising
and of course a big tax exemption
as a business expense.
It is indeed sad to lose anv
skilled people for whatever reason
at a time when expansion of Ajax -
Pickering General is underway,
and other projects on the way in
our quest for Ajax to become a
vibrant community.
Surely, it is not our medicare
system failing to provide our citi-
zens with proper care — it is
instead not proper care taken to
manage the system. Other nations
(including our southern neighbors)
envy our health care — would we
wish it to be otherwise?
Much criticism has been aimed
at the -new kids on the block" at
Queen's Park in the last year, and
most recently for funding of the
system including the vital area of
seniors' homes and child day care.
I would like to remind readers that
it was the health minister in the
Ontario Government in the '70s
that closed a dozen or so hospitals
across Ontario to economize. Our
federal leader in Ottawa hasn't
helped the situation any with hi
about-face on funding (social pro-
grams will not be touched — 1988
campaign) — remember the much
touted day care bill? Instead of a
remedy, he used a "scalpel" — on
us!

A different kind of charity auction
To the editor,
They have been called the poor
mans race horses and a few less flat-
tering names. Capable of flights cov-
ering many hundreds of miles at
speeds up to 50 mph, they return to
their home loft, usually on the same
day. Pigeons, more precisely, 'racing
pigeons'. Not to be confused with
the common kind known to foul
large buildings and to make nests on
apartment balconies. For centuries
these racers have been bred for
speed and distance.
A very popular sport in
Europe, there are a number of clubs
in Canada, affiliated with the
Canadian Union of Racing Pigeon
Clubs, headquartered in London,
Ontario. One of these is the Eastern
Racing Pigeon Club. It is this club,
based in Scarborough, that recently

to raise money for charity. They
approached top racers in Canada and
the United States for donations of
birds. The seminar and auction was
well attended by pigeon fanciers,
anxious to acquire information and
new blood to improve their stock.
The lively bidding, snack bar and
raffle raised nearly $4,000 in just a
few hours.
The club members were delighted
to make generous donations to the
Sick Childrens Hospital, Star Santa
Fund and Ronald MacDonald
House.
Racing pigeons is a fascinating
hobby, one my husband has enjoyed
for nearly SU years. As the wife of a
pigeon flier, I appreciate the homing
instinct not only of the birds, but of
my husband. A great deal of his
time is spent at home caring for and
training his race team.
These birds are the 'race horses
of the sky' and a source of pleasure
for their owners. All are bande
with rings registered by their clu
and by the Canadian Union. If you
see a banded bird sitting quietly on a
building, it is probably resting
before continuing on his way home
from a hard race. However, should
you need to contact the owner, you
may do so by calling the lost and
found secretary, Jim Albani, at 757-
1512 giving the identification from
the legband.

Larissa lowing retires from gymnastics
After five years of living and competing with
extreme back pain, Pickering gymnast Larissa
Lowing retired from Canada's high performance
Program where she's been at the top since 1988.
The former Canadian champ had been diag-
nosed with a back condition called spondolothesis,
a curvature of the spine which is common to most
gymnasts where maximum flexibility is required.
Larissa didn't give up the sport by any means.
She began a full athletic scholarship to Louisiana
State University in September.
Larissa Lowing
Nigel Wilson on Toronto Blue Jays' roster
Ngel Wilson, 22, of Ajax. earned a spot on the Blue
Jays' 40 -man roster when the team opens training in
Dunedin, Florida in late Februarv.
Wilson played the bulk of the 1991 season with the
Dunedin Blue Jays — the Toronto Blue Jays' 'A' minor
league affiliate — of the Florida State League. Wilson
played both centre and left field and posted a batting aver-
age of .301 with 12 home runs, 58 RBI with 35 stolen
bases. He battled for the league's batting title, winding up
in second place.
After the 'A' season ended, Wilson was dispatched to Nigel Wilson
Knoxville — the Blue Jays' 'AA' squad — to help the team in its playoff
series with the Birmingham White Sox.
The stellar season also led to many other accolades for Wilson last year.
He was named to the Florida State League's all-star team as the starting cen-
tre fielder. He ended up playing the entire game and went one -for -throe at the
plate with a double, an RBI and a stolen base.
At the end of season, he was also selected to the league's annual all-star
team at his centre field position.
The biggest honor was the Howard Webster Award as the most valuable
player on the Dunedin squad.

THE LAST BOY SCOUT (R):
Bruce Willis and Damon Wavans
play two down-and-out guys
(Willis is an ex -secret service
agent fired because of his conduct
and Wayans is a former star quar-
terback caught in a web of gam-
bling and drugs) who team up to
solved the murder of Wayans'
girlfriend.
THE PRINCE OF TIDES
(AA): Barbra Streisand directs
and stars in this romantic movie
adapted from Pat Conroy's best-
selling novel. hick Nolte offers
the best performance of his
career as a man trying hard to
deal with a mid-life crisis while
having to recall the pain and
STAR TREK VI: THE UNDIS-
COVERED COUNTRY (PG):
Well, here you have it' The last
voyage of the Starship Enter-
prise with the original crew
(supposedly). Captain Kirk and
the guys are assigned to escort

anger of his child-
hood. Also great
performances by
Blythe Danner and
Kete NelIigan.
HOOK (F): The Steven Spiel -
berg movie is named for Dustin
Hoffman's character but the
movie is all Robin Williams' as
he brings his manic brand of
magic to the eternally childish
Peter Pan character. Julia Roberts
is Tinkerbell and the rest should
be movie history.
JFK (AA): Oliver Stone re -tells
the circumstances surrounding
John Kennedy's assassination
and stirs up some new controver-
sy about the possibility of a
cover-up. Kevin Costner stars as
the New Orleans District Attor-
ney determined to bring the case
to trial.
MY GIRL (PG): Macaulay
Culkin is not home alone, but he
may as well be. Macaulay turns to
Vada Sultenfuss, an 11 -year-old
whose father is an eccentric morti-
cian with a hippie girl friend. Sen-
timental stuff for the holidays.
