Durham Regional Police say the men entered the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce around 1:40 p.m. One was wearing a balaclava and toting either a shotgun or a rifle and the other was brandishing a knife. The bandits got an undeter- mined amount of cash from a teller and fled the bank. They drove off in a pick-up truck that had been stolen from the Claremont area the previous night. Police located the stolen truck about 20 minutes later on the Seventh Concession, north of the Ninth Line. It's believed the robbers had another vehicle waiting. No one was injured. If you have any information on this robbery, phone Durham Regional Police at 683-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 436-8477. TRUCKERS CHARGED: OPP lay charges against truckers who blockaded Highway 401. Parents are frustrated by over- crowding at St. Monica Catholic School and are leaning towards an alternate site not in the forest but within their community that might accommodate a school. Members of the school's contingency committee, a sub -committee of the parent -teach- er association, are demanding a solution, but say they feel -patron- ized" by trustees. Pickering ward one local council- lor Maurice Brenner believes the alternate site (which can't be identi- fied, he says) is a "viable option" and is "ready to get things rolling". Though the town's planting depart- ment agrees the site is suitable for a school, church and park, trustees remain hopeful about building in the forest. The board has had a designated site in the forest since 1982 and received funding approval from the ministry of education in 1989. But plans to build the school were put on hold when town council asked the province to comment on possible preservation of the forest late last year - "I was told we (town council) were tying things up," says Brenner. "I took that to mean it was my responsibility to untie things, and I'm prepared to push my colleagues to approve this alternate site. OPP issued warnings to truckers Thursday morning to be off the highway by 10 a.m. Although the trucks began to move, they drove at a slow pace and contin- ued a "rolling blockade", says an OPP spokesman. "It continued like that for hours." In the afternoon, 14 charges were laid against truckers in Durham region and OPP Downsview laid 27 charges against truckers in the west end of Toronto. These charges included careless driving, interfering with traffic, prohibiting the use of the left lane, failing to keep a daily log book, and hav- ing improper tires. By late afternoon Thursday, the trucks had passed west through Metro Toronto and headed for the London/Samia area where the trucks dispersed. OPP will be monitoring the highways in the Greater Toronto Area throughout the holiday weekend looking for any more slowdowns. The two-year agreement is retroac- tive to Apr. 1, 1991 and runs to March 31, 1993. Custodial employees belonging to the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 218 will receive a wage increase on actual hourly rates of six per cent in the first year and 5.5 per cent in the second. The shift premium and special premi- ums will be frozen for a two-year period. A supplemental employment bene- fits plan will be put in place for employees on pregnancy/parenAl leaves. It will cover the two-week waiting period before Unemployment Insurance benefits kick in, and the level of benefit is set at a weekly rate of 90 per cent of the employee's weekly insurable earnings. The safety shoe allowance for maintenance employees is increased from $50 to $70 a year. Macdonald Public School Breakfast Club at any branch of thN Bank of Montreal. The Breakfast Club, being organized by the Pickering Optimist Club and other agencies, will allow hungry school children to start the day with a bal- anced meal. It will take an estimated $10,000 to get the club started, and Optimist Club president John Hayden predicts at least one other school will also need a Breakfast Club. School officials and community groups decided to start the club after a teacher gave as many as 10 hungry children cereal in one day. Hayden urges residents to support the program. -It's a community prob- lem, and we need the community to get together and solve the problem." The Sir John A. Macdonald Breakfast Club will become a charity as part of the umbrella organization The Durham Breakfast Club. Residents making donations will be given a receipt for income tax purposes. Ab PICKERING - After 28 years on the job, Pickering director of public works Ray Hutchinson is hanging up his hard hat. On Friday, Hutchinson ended his long career with the town and entered retirement. His colleagues gave him a send-off during a party Wednesday night. "My philosophy is to look for - &ward, not backward," says Hutchinson, who adds he's not the sentimental type. "I'll kiss them all goodbye. I won't kiss the guys, of course, but I'll kiss the girls." Hutchinson is looking forward to a busy retirement, filled with hob- bies that include flying airplanes, dancing and travelling. Hired in 1963, Hutchinson began his career with what was *hen the township of Pickering as assistant to the engineer. In those days, the five -member department was headquartered in an office at the foot of Liverpool Road where a sewage treatment plant is located today. "I have all kinds of memories," notes Hutchinson. "We used to have some real characters on council in those days. Today, they aren't near- ly as funny." He recalls a time when the department would use dynamite to clear ice jams from a water pump- ing station on the Rouge River, and remembers meeting with Ontario Hydro officials to discuss the build- ing of the nuclear plant. He also remembers when motorists had to cross Highway 401 at level cross- ings with stop signs. "It was hairy." Mayor Wayne Arthurs says Hutchinson "served the community well" and "showed leadership, par- ticularly in times of high growth." Hutchinson will be replaced by Steve Vokes, formerly the town's deputy director of works. ..,•T•}.r';a,-,r'rN4A'..;fayY'NiiK'T v,i'''. i. .. >.__ THB NZW5 ADVZRTIl D SUNDAY, MAY 15,1!!! -!AGE S Firefighters run to douse MD DURHAM - You might see firefighters running through town in the early morning hours next week, but they won't be putting out a fire. To the editor- Many ditorMany parents, students and teach- ers were shocked and disappointed when the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board announced it was cutting the Grade 7 and 8 family studies and industrial arts programs. lite demise of these programs is part of the board's attempt to keep local tax increases comparable to the Durham public board, which man- aged to keep its increases relatively low without cutting or even reducing these valuable services. The Ministry of Education is cur- rently emphasizing the importance of technological courses in our schools to encourage and prepare our students to enter into the various related professions and to develop interests for their future leisure activities. The ministry guidelines suggest that 60 hours be given to each program but most co-ed cours- es in the province offer 25 to 30 hours in each, for a combined total of 50 to 60 hours. The two co-ed programs of industrial arts and fami- ly studies presently offered by the Durham region roman catholic sepa- rate school board involve over 2,500 girls and boys for 15 hours in each subject, for a total of 30 hours. Our teachers have designed their pro- grams to incorporate as many of the ministry guidelines as possible in their action packed courses. Probably the most important achievement of both programs is that every student attains that great feel- ing of success when they complete each one of their self-made projects. These programs promote co-opera- tive learning with group related work and activities, organizational skills and plenty of hands-on activi- ties. The family studies program includes food preparation units involving the making of various foods such as cookies, muffins, pizza, nachos, potato skins, lasagna, cinnamon buns and pies. The sewing unit involve learning to operate sewing machines to create such items as decorator print pillows, stuffed animals, wall organizers, sweat shirts, pencil cases and make- up bags. The following units of study were included in September 1989 to meet the new ministry guidelines for family studies. Housing and design involves the interior placing of rooms and fumi- ture for various kinds of lifestyles. The parenting unit involves dis- cussing the stages of growth, the care of babies and procedures for babysitting and solutions for various Problems that might arise. The fami- ly responsibility project requires the students to complete several chores at home to develop a sense of responsibility towards helping other family members. The proper nutri- tion and eating disorders unit stress- es the importance of good eating habits and the causes and treatment for various eating disorders such as bulimia. The Ministry of Education is cur- rently rewriting the guidelines for industrial arts. The new document which has been distributed in draft form presents many new changes which are mostly in the secondary level. The main change at the ele- mentary level is to encourage the design process and to use problem solving techniques to create student projects. The approaches are presently being used in our industrial arts programs to teach our students how to produce various projects using wood and plastic. Personal Let's not ruin a young man's life To the editor: My heartfelt sympathy goes out to family and friends of the young fellow who recently passed away after drinking methylhydrate. Methylhydrate is, I'm sure, a very vile solution. I can understand a child up to five years old swallowing this through ignorance, but an 18 -year- old and two 17-year-olds, I'm at a loss to comprehend. The baby will experiment, the "Old wino" from downtown will drink almost any- thing that's lying around loose. But three healthy young men should know better. Apart from the obvious learning Of skills, the industrial arts and fam- ily studies programs cancelled by the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board also offered Grade 7 and 8 students some valuable experiences in work- ing cx»peratively, learning respon- sibility for others, taking responsi- bility for their own actions and, in nmY cam probably the student's Only opportunity to really succeed. These elements in the canceled pro- grams (we are frequently told) are Ply the noes to which today's Young Pie need to be exposed. Surely there must be a better way to reduce outs local educational taus than by removing these student -on ented, responsibility -building, hands-on approaches to Joe Ryan, ., :President, Teachers' Amodedon, Dwhm Unit ABE FAKHOURIE Dwaufto Dbfrlbution Deportment (6113-5117): Jodi MoMponwf►. A sharp increase in heartworm disease has been noted in the past year. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association reports heart- worm cases rose 45 per cent in 1990 from 1989. More alarming are statistics that show 80 per cent of all reported cases of heartworm disease have been diagnosed in Ontario. Canine heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes. It's caused by parasitic worms that live in the dog's heart, resulting in impaired blood flow and damage to the heart, •'ungs and liver. In some cases, dam- age to the internal organs is so extensive that the condition may be fatal. Dr. Richard Liddell, a veterinari- an at the Ajax Animal Hospital, says 600 canines in Canada have con- tracted heartworm disease in the last 12 months. Liddell calls that figure is high. And, he says you'd expect that canine heartworm disease would be found more in an outdoor dog that is used for hunting or that lives near a high -mosquito area such as woods. Ironically, the disease is found more often in dogs that usually only go outdoors only to eliminate. "I have no idea why," says Liddell. Should your dog contract heart- worm disease, you can expect to pay upwards of $1,500 for treatment. The best way to treat it is to pre- vent it," says Liddell. The easiest form of treatment is a pill dog owners give to their pet once a month from now until November. Since mosquito season has already begun, it's advisable you get your dog to a veterinarian soon. Your dog will first require a blood test to ensure he doesn't already have heartworm. Liddell says the cost of the test and pills varies depending on the size of the dog. You can expect to pay between $35 and $50 total for the test and pills. That doesn't cover a clinical examination. It's taken him from a 10 -year career in the British navy to tutoring the children of ex- Beatle Paul McCartney. Maggs, a World War II veteran who served on the HMS Ajax, and his wife Sybil are visit- ing Ajax. The town took its name from the British cruiser, which played a key part in the Battle of the River Plate, the first major Allied naval victory in World War II. Other Allied ships involved were the HMS Exeter and the HMS Achilles. The .hree cruiser -class vessels took on the German pocket battleship the Graf Spee. Maggs served two commissions on the Ajax, the first beginning in 1935. In fact, he was a member of the original steaming party that picked up the boat from the builders. From 1935 to just after the Battle of River Plate, on Dec. 13, 1939, Maggs spent most of his time at sea on the vessel. The Ajax was pan of the South American squadron in the West Indies making its way up and down both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the continent. The boat also spent time in the Mediterranean and became involved in the Arab rebellion in Palestine and the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The Ajax also faced a hurricane off the coast of Bermuda in February 1938 and it pro- Charles Maggs, right, will have a street named after him In Ajax when a subdivision north of Pickering Village Is built. Commodore Henry Harwood was in charge of the Exeter and Captain Charles Woodhouse was at the helm of the Ajax prior to the battle. When the ships rendezvoused in the South Atlantic, Harwood moved to the Ajax. One Since the introduction of our Cash Back Program, we have received hundreds of calls from pee Ic and businesses seeking more information on how this program can benefit them. Requests for more contracts will be sent soon. Please bear with us. Ontario -Wide Natural Gas Cash Back Company Inc. is a private company dedicated to saving you, the gas user, money We are just one of the many companies that will be involved with your supply of natural ger. Our role is different than your local utility. We take advantage of the lower available gas prices in a competitive market through shorter term contracts. This can mean lower gas costs to the parciciQQants in our program. We act only at the "wholesale" level of the market to pool people and businesses together in order to save them money. Since we get a percentage of those total sav' the greater your total savings, the better we both do. About half of all the gas distributed by Consumers' Gas is now a part of this type of Direct Purchaseuhgement. Initially this was mainly large industrial natural pas users and as t hhed eaars progressed, smaller businesses and more res have parucipated. What our company does is "pool" the homeowners and business users of natural gas together so they may also take advantage of the savings available under federal deregulation. Large industrial users of Natural Gas have been p their gas from producers since 1986. d we can do for you with either Consumers' Gas or other local UM Each of us has a role in the supply of your atura nl gas. Our company's program groups or "pools" small users of natural together to buy natural gas at a lower price than you can buy individually. By pooling homeowners together with businesses, large enough gas volumes are achieved to get reduced prices. This is roughly a 22% gross savings. 60% of the balance is sent diresly to you in the form of your "Cash Back Cheque" after the registration fee is deducted. Savings are on your gas costs only, transportation, distribution, and rental charges are p<<rt of the "retail" charges from your local utility. These ocher charges account for about _l day, Harwood was doodling on a sheet of paper, predicting when the Battle of the River Plate would begin. He was off by one hour. Harwood had predicted a battle would begin at 6 a.m. on Dec. 13. The crews were put on active station, but nothing happened, says Maggs. The crew was told to "shut down" shortly after 6 a.m., but smoke was soon seen on the horizon. ADVERTISEMENT half of your bill. Since the gas cost is a fraction of your total gas bill, the gross savings on your bill as a whole will be about 5-6%. Since each user of natural gas uses a different amount of natural gas, each users savings will be different. The $50 savings is not meant to be a guarantee. In fact the small users savings will be smaller. We are truing to use a bench mark or target of $20 as a minimum savings after fees have been deducted. For the small user we will reduce our registration fee in order to have your savings hit this miim num. This bench mark will be adjusted each year as the spread in prices increases or decreases. For the very small user ie. under $600 annually, savings equal to our bench .mark are difficult be ause of the low amount of gas used. Please inform us if your annual consumption is below $600 if you have already sent in your contract. We will remove your contract from our program ifyou so wish. Write M us at 1 i Albert St., ark ham, Ont. L3P 2T3. Timing for the program will be as follows: when we have received your contras we "pool" them together with other contracts and submit a "package of p=and is to the respective utility. ince we have businesses joining on a continuous basis, we will be submitting multi -Ac "pools' as is warranted. From this date the u ' ty must process the "package". This does take time and is dependent on the work load of the utility. this period could be throe months and is out of our control. When that period is over and we have signed contracts with your local utility for your particular pool" then your future purchases become eligible. At the end of one year, as those purchases build), you build up your savings with which we split with Y01L You receive 6096 of the total savings, less the $27.50 registration fee. Again, for the small user we will be reducing this registration fee in order to maximize your savings. Within a few weeks of this anniversary, we wall be sending your chcquc directly toou. Keep in mind, at no time will we ask you to pre- pay your registration fee. We cannot stress enough thatyour relationship with your local utility will not change. Their level of top quality service will not change. Consumers' Gas has never made a profit i The Exeter was seat to investigate and the battle began soon afterwards. It continued "off and on all day", Maggs recalls. The Graf Spee eventually retreated into the harbor at Montevideo, Uruguay and the cap_ tain of the ship destroyed and sank it on Dec. 20. Maggs worked in the engine room depart- ment of the Ajax, running the evaporators4))) which turned salt water into fresh water. Shortly after the battle, Maggs was trans- ferred to another ship. After leaving the navy, Maggs joined the police force in England where he worked for 26 years, retiring in 1968. "I graduated in sci- ence and math, so I went on to teaching for another 20 years." In 1984, he tutored Paul and Linda McCartneys' children in the United States while they were making the movie Give My Regards to Broadstreet. "It showed me what life was like as a mil- lionaire, the advantages and disadvantages. [L , put me off being a millionaire, having FBI ) protection breathing down your neck all the time," he says. He describes the McCartneys as "an awful- ly nice family. Paul is a very natural chap and Linda is the same way. "I'm very fond of the McCartneys. They're very, very nice people," he says. The McCartneys live near the Maggs in East Sussex, England, where the Maggs will return May 22 after their stay in Ajax ends. f on the gas component of your gas bill. What Consumers' Gas does make a profit on is the distribution and transportation of that gas. Th will continue to do that service for you. You will not be changing gas utilities by signing this direct -purchase agreement. What we do as an agent for you and many others as pan of this pool" is arrange for your gas supply at a discount. And we do this in conjunction with other very large companies and buying pools and ra 6W Western producers of Natul Gas in order to best ensure you a reliable supply at less cost to you. Forecast error and contractual and legal risks exist, seek legal advice if you so wish. Potential risks are always involved in the natural gas industry although we feel that generally Natural Gas has been a safe and reliable source of energy for many years. We want everyone in our program to understand how it works, and- we will be imp g our future literature to help everyone beccerm undcrstarid. There are savings to be had by participating in a pool buying program and you will continue co deal widI your local utility. We do understand that people may need to cancel in the f tt ere, for eatample - if they move to a new house that doesn't use gas. If you move to a new home that does use gas, you will need to sign a new contract and resubmit as part of a new► "package". To be removed from our program, inform us in writing and we will remove your contras. Our company address is 11 Albert St., Markham, Ont. OP 2T3. Our large package will be submitted shortly. We cannot guarantee any minimum level of savings when a contract is withdrawn anytime between anniversaries. We say that this program is designed to last for a ten Year tern so that we will not have to re - you every year. For chis reason our fee is reduced in subsequent years. In closing, we are working hard to get you the biggest savings we can, even for the small gas user. Brock defeated the upstart Dunbarton Spartans squad 15-0 to end the league's regular season play. Earlier in the week, Dunbarton played the Whitby Anderson Raiders. The Spartans were kept off the scoresheet by the Raiders, losing 4-0. Dunbarton finished league play with a record of one tie and four losses. The playoffs will begin on May 29. The Spartans girls' rugby team put forth a strong showing at its first tournament of the year in Ottawa last weekend. Dunbarton's girls' rugby team — in its first year of competitive play — finished as the finalists at the Ottawa tournament, hosted by Sir Robert Borden High School. The Spartans met Ottawa's St. Paul's High School in the final game, with the game ending in a 0- 0 deadlock after regulation time. After 10 -minute sudden -death overtime play, the game remained in a stalemate. However, St. Paul won the contest and the champi- onships on penalty kicks by a 2-0 score. Dunbarton coach Margaret Fraser was extremely happy with the play of the team against the more experienced St. Paul's squad. "They (St. Paul's) have a year more experience than we do," she says. "We were getting a lot of compliments about our play." In the preliminary round of the tournament, Dunbarton posted a four win, one tie record to advance to the finals. In their opening game, the Spartans played to a 0-0 tie with the host Sir Robert Borden team. Next, Dunbarton blanked GIoucester 12-0 in the second - round game. Angie Mahon, Denise Humphreys and Liisa Stainburn all had trys for the Spartans. Playing Glebb High School of Ottawa in their third game of the tourney, the Spartans responded with an 8-0 shutout. Angie Mahon and Kristin Pantelmann scored trys for Dunbarton. Playing in the fourth round against Colonel Bye school, also of Ottawa, Dunbarton responded with a 4-0 win to vault them into the final. Liisa Stainburn scored the only try of the game. Area synchronized swimmers golden AJAX-PICKERING - Area members of the Oshawa Synchro Swim Club were golden at the 1991 Ontario Trillium Championships at McMaster University. The eight -member team, which included Teri Pearce and Robyn Parashyniak of Ajax and Kirsten Mills and Vanessa Reeve of Pickering, captured the gold medal in the age 11 -to -14 category. The Oshawa squad swam a cre- ative routine choreographed by coach Tanya Sheehey to earn first place in routines. Extra figure coaching by Debbie Sands, coach of the Oshawa senior 'B' team, and by Heather Johnston, a nation- al team member, led to a marked improvement in compulsory figure scores which were then averaged and added to the swimmers' rou- tine scores to eats them a first at the championship. This routine, along with all the other team, solo and duet routines of the club, will be featured at the Pickering Recreation Complex on June 5.
