If you hauled out the old cliche "larger than life" to descnbe Horst
Hornung. nobody would call you a liar.
The manufacturing honcho and Ajax resident is, indeed, larger than life.
He's big and barrel-chested, with thick and leathery worker's hands, a
deep, resonant voice and a confident manner that suggests both blue-col-
lar sensibility and entrepreneurial flair.
He is variously a kind grandfather, hosting a birthday sleep -over in a
hobby -farm bam on his 23 -acre property that hugs Carruthers Creek
Marsh; an environmental protectionist, shooing Florida -style airboat users
.Tway from swan rusting sites. and a forward-looking manufacturer with a
commitment to technology and training.
Two yeah ago, he marred his second wife Dianne, the couple has six
grandchildren.
A town resident for eight years, Hornung is chairperson and CEO of a
cozen manufacturing and investment companies. His most prominent
local ventures are Horn Plastics Ltd., D&E Precision Tooling Ltd., Pike's
Tent & .Awning Ltd. and H.A. Hornung Inestments Ltd., all under the
umbrella of The Horn Group. Together, they earn sales of more than $30
million a year.
Homung's story is one of achievement, of a German teenager with a
nould-making apprenticeship under his belt who came to Canada in 19%.
to make his fortune. Along with other European emigres. Homung was
pan of a wave of skilled European tradesmen who capitalized on North
Amenca's boom years, beginning in the mid -1950%.
He studied English at night school and put in 80 -hour weeks at his
trade, using "sweat equity" to earn a stake in Canadian industry.
'There are unlimited opportunities here," he says, his eyes crinkling.
"lou put your own limitations on things and coming to this country and
seeing what other people could do, l said 'Why not?'"
Hornung found his future in making the moulds for plastic products.
In 1969, Hornung jointed with two partners to establish a mould -mak-
ing business, D&E Precision Tooling Ltd. The company later expanded
into a full-service operation for plastic products.
One partner quit, Hornung's remaining partner died in 1976. Over the
years, his company expanded into the tent and awning business with the
acquisition of Pike's (the largest tent maker in Canada), and eventually
entered the real estate field. Hornung's companies employ more than 200
workers, in plants from Bowmanville to Scarborough and in Alberta.

Hornung comes by his love of
animals and the environment natu-
rally, from an early age he wanted
to be a biologist. His private bobby
farm is home to a llama, a passel of
ducks, three miniature Sicilian
donkeys, a fallow deer and four
African goats. He recently planted
500 trees in a day. He watches the
sum rise above the 13 hectares of
Carruthers Creek Marsh (his prop-
erty extends halfway into the
marsh's bay) and cares about the
welfare of the wild animals nesting
in its nooks and crannies. And he
says most people "don't understand
the real story of the environment."
Several years ago, Hornung
tried to work with local developer
Runnymede Corporation on plans
to develop the marsh area into a
major subdivision. Local environ-
mental groups are currently asking
for 120 metre buffer zones to pro-
tect local wildlife. Runnymede
wants to cut those buffers in half
and is pursuing a hearing before the
Ontario Municipal Board to do it.
Hornung had envisioned a park-
land open to the public with a
bridge spanning the marsh, some-
thing that "everyone could share. In
Europe, with millions of people in
a small span, you have to be care-
ful about land use. In Canada, less
than one percent of the land is used
for development like highways and
railways. There has to be a balanc-
ing act for progress and the envi-
ronment." But the arrival of the
Crombie Report, advocating devel-
opment of the waterfront trail sys-
tem, caused Runnymede to "get
cold feet," Hornung says.
Local environmental activist
and underwater naturalist Errol
Sarpkaya counters that Carruthers
Creek Marsh should be left entire-
ly alone.
The marsh, a Class 2 wetland is
"much healthier than Duffrns
Creek," says Sarpkaya, who
recently organized and conducted
the mass removal of purple looses-
trife from Duffms Creek as part of
Ajax Environmental Week.

Europe.

In an economy rocked by reces-

remained financially healthy. But
he sees dismal attitude changes in

Keeping communities alive
What a pleasure it is to be able to say that it's Ajax Home
Week time again? Coming as it does, after another long,
tough winter — and this year a disappointing spring — the
warmth of these festivities each year somehow seems to
overcome all obstacles.
Past years have seen some parade days so hot we thought
the marchers might melt and rainy nights which made street
dancing and fireworks impossible. But hey, what would
Canada be without unpredictable weather, eh?
There was a time, not that long ago, when we were able to
say that the parade brought out virtually everyone in Ajax —
one-half of the population watched, while the other half was
in it. And while we may no longer be able to make that
statement, the Week remains as a great opportunity for new-
comers to meet the mal Ajax, to discover that this town does
indeed have warmth and depth.
Remarkably, without even having an identifiable "down-
town core," Ajax has managed to kap its small town feeling
alive — thanks in large part to the work of the hundreds of
volunteers in the town's many service clubs and associa-
tions, without whose spirit this annual celebration just sim-
ply would not happen.
New homeowners are often surprised to discover that
Ajax is much more than just another of Toronto's many bed-
room communities; not merely a place to drive through on
your way to and from the GO train. We challenge newcom-
ers to become a part of this community. Spend this next
week meeting Your yrs, watching our service clubs
in action, and discovering the unique history of this very
unusual town.
And don't just stop at the parades (we have two!), find
time to walk around historic Pickering Village, take die Ajax
LACAC bus tour (new this year) to learn even more about
the balmy which surrounds you, and than buy the book, "A
Town Calld Ajax" (avmWble at the Central library).
Take in the pancake breakfast, have dimer out with us;
support Your community while having fun and mewing peo-
ple. This year's Youth Crusade '96 celebrates the fact that
most — not some, but most — of our youth are good kids. If
you have young people in your family, rMcommend that they
check it out. We need to cekbrate our =cc== more.
In Pickering, the Frenchman's Bay Festival promim to be
a blast again this year, offering a glimpse of yet another
community which knows how to celebrate die fact that it
exists.
Have you considered joining a service club hW. In a
time when "communities" have all but disappeared amid
urban sprawl, how fortunate we are to have people who care
enough to keep alive such spirit and pride of place,
A groat big thank -you to all those who do!

Mayor Parish
Residents of
Ajax:
Ajax Home
Week is a time to
celebrate our com-
m unity. It is a time
when long time
residents renew
old friendships and
new arrivals can
become aware and
involved in the
many aspects of
our Town.
From the very beginning Ajax has
been served by very strong and dynam-
ic Service Clubs. These clubs count on
your support throughout the year to
assist them in their community and char-
itable efforts. Ajax Home Week is the
opportunity for our Service Clubs to say
'Thank You" for your support. As a past
Chairman of Ajax Home Week I know the
tremendous effort and commitment that
goes into organizing this event. On
behalf of all mem-
bers of Ajax Town
Council, I congrat-
ulate 1996
Chairman Roger
Mattison and all
members of his
hardworking com-
mittee for their
efforts. Once
again they have
done an outstand-
ing job.
Ajax Town
Council fully sup-
ports Ajax Home Week and takes plea-
sure in inviting you and your family to
participate in the many Home Week
events.
Sincerely,
Steve Parish, Mayor
`96 Chairman
As we enter our
second twenty-five
years of Home
Week I would like
to invite all Ajax
residents to
become part of
this year's celebra-
tion.
A special thanks
to new Mayor
Parish and Town
Council for their
continued support
and to Ajax Parks
and Recreation
and Ajax Works
All of your favourites are bade, our
opening parade, Kinsmen Steam Bar B
Q, Rotary Pancake Breakfast and
Fireworks Findel " with a mxnber
of new events that should not be
ignored.
Youth Crusade '96 will be ongoing for
four days, starting June 6 at the Ajax
co mlunilty Centre under the direction of
Danny Fehr.
We are also privileged to have
Alannah Myles in
concert on June 8,
1996 at the
Annandale Arena.
Also new this
year, we are work-
ing in conjunction
with the Pickering
Village Festival.
Their events along
with ours make up
one of the largest
Home Week
undertakings in
many years.
I would at this
time Ike to thank
1 y friends at the Ajax Kinsmen Club
_without whom I would never have been
able to handle this job as Chairman.
Their ongoing support has made this
g that I can be proud of.
In dosing let me invite each and every
resident to participate In as many events
is you can. This is your celebration -

Crusade 196 f] o-r+arIPc PVPn NPt-fPr
It's an unfortunate fact that
young people are, more often
than not, portrayed negatively in
the media.
This weekend, a group of
talented and dynamic youths will
be out to change that image
during Youth Crusade '96 at the
Ajax Community Centre.
The Durham -wide, non-
denominational Christian foun-
dation is hosting a blockbuster
event, complete with live bands
and guest speakers, that should
be one of the highlights of Ajax
Home Week.
On the agenda is music from
entertainers like soloist Heather
McCullough and the band RISE,
a Youth Cafe, guest speakers
(featuring local MP Dan
McTeague and Toronto Argonaut
Brian Warren, as well as youth
speakers), dramas, a food bank,
barbecue and praise gatherings.
Dorothy Fehr, a spokesperson
for the crusade and the mother of
Youth Crusade director Danny
Fehr, said changing perceptions
among adults will be a bonus,
but it will not happen overnight.
More important, she says, is
giving hope to a "lost generation"
of youths.
"The outreach is to give the
kids a reason for existing and to
get the kids involved in the
community instead of just
hanging around and getting into
trouble," she says. "We want to
show them they can have good
clean fun without drugs and
alcohol. We want to show them
there is a purpose for life."
'Positive' influences for
today's young people, dubbed
'Generation X', will be out in
force at the four-day event,
which begins Thursday.
Hundreds of youths are involved
in organizing the crusade, now in
its third year.
"Not all young people are bad.
We have some positive young
people here who are outreaching
to other kids."
Danny, now 28, was one of
those youths who could have
used more positive influences
growing up. He did stints in jail
for theft and drugs and depended
heavily on the bottle.
Finally, Danny, with help from
the Bible, starting believing in
himself and began turning his
life around.
Youth Crusade '96, which will
be held on the west soccer field,
runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on
Thursday and Friday with early
festivities (the crusade will have
a float in the Home Week parade)
on Saturday, beginning at 12:30
p.m. The praise gathering will be
held Sunday, starting at 8 pm.

Given the amount o.
information we have
received on the subject it
recent years, the majority
of us realize that water
conservation is necessary
for the future.
The next logical step is
to look at our household
water usage with conser-
vation in mind — and to
help reduce our personal
cost.
The following check list
will help assess water effi-
ciency in each home situa-
tion.
1. Is the toilet an old
water guzzler? New low
flush toilets can save up to
60 per cent less water per
flush.
2. Replace leaky tap
washers or faucets, A
small drip can waste mega
litres per day.
3. Use aerators on all
faucets to reduce tap water
flow by 25 per cent.
4. Install low flush
shower heads and cut this
water usage by 50 per
cent.
5. Check for leaks in all
plumbing futures. Dollars
and water could be wasted.
Through increasing
demand and municipal
government regulations,
the field of water conser-
vation products continues
to expand.
The phunbing industry
now offers more stylish
and attractive low flow
futures to suit individual
home decor.
Above all, when we
maloe these decisions we
trust look at water conser-
vation as an anti -waste
method and not an anti -use
program. It is the environ-
mentally smart thing to do.

BETTER HOMES & BUILDERS
aMaple Run offers best location and price
in Oshawa's Parkwood Glen community
it
'3 Buying at MapleRun Homes' Parkwood
Glen community in Oshawa, where the deer
S° and smart homeowners play, is like buying a
Z piece of the country life, yet with city
amenities only minutes away.
Homes in the community are chock-full of
special features, not the least of which is the
park -like setting. Parkwood Glen — an apt
name if there ever was one — is bordered by a
park (and meandering Oshawa Cheek) to the
east and historic Camp Samac to the west.
The tastes of city life: schools,
entertainment, a medical clinic and shopping
(including 5 Points Mall) are but a short drive
to the south.
At Parkwood Glen, you can truly have your
cake and eat it too. And with the homes - all
bungalows and two-storey houses - staning at
just $139,900, the price isn't too rich, either.
"It's an absolutely beautiful setting," says
Anna Italiano, an on-site sales representative
for builder MapleRun Homes. "If you border
onto Camp Samac or the park, don't be
surprised to see deer in your back yard."
Inside the Parkwood Glen homes — there
are just a few lots remaining. so you'd better
m(,,, e fast — there are a host of special
features sure to please the discriminating
home buyer.
The main stairs have oak finished stringers,
oak railing and oak spindles in natural finish,
as per plan. The doors are Colonial 800
Series, with colonial trim, there are interior
french doors with obscured glass in kitchen
pantrys, as per plans, and mirrored slider
doors on front entry closets.
The kitchen and bathroom features include
porcelain bathroom fixture holders, pressure
balance valves on tub/shower and shower
glass enclosure with shower door, as per plan.
Other features include ceramic floor tile in
hover. rough -in for central vac, rough -in for
three-piece washroom in basement and single
xvel faucets in all bathrooms.
!MapleRun offers all -brick exteriors on all
plans but one (some with stone front
ievations).
"I don't think there's a builder out there
ho gives as many features as we do, for as
good a price," Anna says.
To make the homes at Parkwood Glen an
even sweeter deal, MapleRun Homes is
running a spring inventory sale, with
.liscounts available on three homes, now
-eady for immediate occupancy, including the
-2.202 sq. ft. Grandview on Lot 41.
The Grandview, which comes on a 40 -foot
iot, is all -brick with stone front elevation, gas
fireplace, open concept, pantry with french
door, en suite oval tub and separate shower.
The home also includes a kitchen with
hreakfast nook (and dropped breakfast bar), a
living room with coffered ceiling, sunken
laundry and four bedrooms. Normally selling
for 5188,490, this home is prided at S180,990.
A Grandview model is available for viewing
at Lot 44.
Also discounted is the 1,909 sq. ft.
Windemere on Lot 18 for $173,990 (with a
60 -ft lot, all -brick exterior, rec room, ceramic
foyer, double car garage, main level laundry,
oval tub and separate shower stall en suite,
upgraded windows and oversized deck) and
the 2,700 sq. ft. Birchwood on Lot 32 for
5203,990 (50 -ft lot, full brick, library, pantry
with french door, en suite oval tub, gas
fireplace with marble facing, separate shower
and main floor plywood sub floor with
ceramic).
All prices include GST.
The builder, MapleRun Homes, has created
communities (and received the Excellent
Rating from Ontario New Home Warranty
Program for each one) in Pickering, Oakville
and Brampton. Founders Frank DellElce and
Tony Cheng founded the company in 1986
but both had already established enviable
reputations in residential construction in the
preceding two decades.
Today MapleRun Homes continues that
tradition of quality construction and stands
behind its homes with an after-sales service
program that is second to none.
The homes of Parkview Glen are located at
Ritson Road and Conlin Road in north
Oshawa, just minutes north of Taunton Road.
Access to the community is off Conlin
(Edenwood Drive) and off Ritson
(Woodmount Road).
The sales office, staffed by Anna and
Linda, is open Monday to Thursday, 1 p.m. to
8 p.m; Friday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday,

From playing dubs throughout her native Canada, to
globe-trotting tours in support of

"ALANNAH," Alamah Myles has
never played it safe.
Her refusal to stick to any formula

be a tribute to all my favourite groups

Alannah co -wrote eight of the album's
eleven songs.
Alannah Myles was born on
Christmas Day. Her father, who was in broadcasting and
advertising, produced Canada's fust radio show and was

Spartans three -peat
Back to back, to back.
Dunbarton High School's
senior boys rugby team has
captured the Lake Ontario
Secondary School
Association title for the third
consecutive year. The
Spartans finished top of the
heap after a hard-fought 8-3
victory over a gutsy Pine
Ridge squad last Friday at
Wanderers Field.
"We physically played
very hard," said Spartan
coach Bill Dalliday. "Both
teams are very, very aggres-
sive. But the kids worked
very hard, no
question."
After dom-
inating the
opening 15
minutes of the
game, the
Spartans took
penalty after
penalty which
allowed the
Pumas to get
field position
and make
the easy try to put the
Spartans up 5-3. It was a lead
they would never relinquish,
although there were some
tense moments for the red and
black in the dying seconds of
the match.
With under five minutes
remaining in the title game,
the Pumas pressed for the
tying try five meters from the
Spartan goal line. The rest of
the match was played within
that area as Dunbarton tried
to escape with the victory.
When a Puma player went up
and over from a yard out for

Pine Ridge's Bill Taggart
opened the scoring by boot-
ing one through the uprights
to give his team a 3-0 lead.
But Dunbarton bounced right
back two minutes later,
thanks in large part to an
incredible run from a scrum
by Chris Fairen, who was
able to open up a big hole and
pass off to Rob Patterson for
the apparent
tie, a penalty
was called
just seconds
before on
them to deny
the score. But
Pine Ridge
continued to
apply the
pressure only
to have the
referee blow
the final
whistle with the Pumas
inches away from the goal
line.
"I wanted to get away from
their forwards," said Dalliday
of the game plan. "We had
better backs, and I knew
that..
As happy as Dalliday is to
have won the title for the
third consecutive year, he
didn't expect iL

had the best team out here,"
admits Dalliday. "Our team
isn't as experienced as last
year's. But most of these
kids had won before and the
difference for us was the
development of the new kids.
We had to make them veter-
ans in five weeks. That was
our key"
Dumbarton's other points
came off the boot of Colin
Kaye Orly in the second half.
With the win. the Spartans
advance to the Ontario
Federation of School's
Athletic Association champi-
onships to be held in
Scarborough. Sixteen teams
will vie for the provincial
crown. Dunbarton is not one
of the favourites heading into
the tournament. So, to make
the semi-finals will be an
accomplishment that will
make the coach happy.
