Ajax paid $140,000 of the bill , although support for the bridge was not unanimous when it was appy last Yea• Parish, in fact, voted against the expenditure, preferring to save the cash for a "war chest" for an expected legal battle over another waterfront issue. Councillor Jim McMaster, at the time, called the structure a "bridge to nowhere." Pickering paid for the trail improvements on its side of the creels - approximately $66,000 - while the Rotary Clubs from the two towns contributed the remaining $35,000. Ontario Hydro (labor and trail post instal- lation) and Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (labor and study work) also belped out. Most of the wodc on the bridge, which sits on land owned by the authority, was completed in January, said Ajax park deputy director Joel Rowe. Pathway and some asphalt work are expected to be finished by opening day. "I think the bridge is very important: first and foremost it links us to Pickering," Parish said. "It's also a very significant devel- opment in the evolution of the waterfront trail." Sat. 9-6 A AaewtamLlelradPak Sun. 12-51wesipedols"MM) A labor dispute is not the town's problem, decided Pickering Council Monday night after refusing a gas station franchise owner's request for a tax reduction. The owner of the Petro - Canada station at Brock Road and Bayly Street made the request to the town for a $999.79 cut in his taxes because a strike shut him down for most of last year. The strike at the station, one of only three unionized Petro -Canada stationS in Ontario (including a second in Pickering) started last May and lasted into 1996. Regional councillor Doug Dickerson said the town "can't be seen taking sides" in labor disputes. "I want to make an unequivocal statement to any business that you can't go to us for a reduction if you have a strike," Dickerson said. "We have to remain neutral here." Regional councillor Rick Johnson was the only council member to support the gas station owner, noting the company lost a great deal of revenue during the strike. Dickerson pointed out that the parent firm recorded an $80 million profit last quarter. The station owners' tax cut had been approved at the regional level, Dickerson added. From the moment last week's paper hit the streets, the phones began nnging in response - with callers prepared to debate and defend. And although we invited them to put it in writing, curmsty, no-one has taken the time to do so vet. Vk wondered if our competition, who also called for the closing of the local nuke plant, had received a similar barrage. How dare we suggest such a dung, Amid the rhetoric came some thoughtful questions, of course, and eon - cm Had we given much thought to what would happen to our local ec000- my given the loss of over 1,000 jobs? And what about the negative impact such bad press might have on our housing industry? Afar all, who would want to move to Pickering if given the news that the place might not be safe? How did we get to be the villah we wondered, when even Pickeriag's own councillors were having misgivings and calling for a tax revolt? Whcn a situation is bad it's bad. Sooner or later, the time has to come when we accept reality for what it is. For Pickering and Ontario Hydro that time has coati. One suggestion put forward was that if Hydro were to get some indepen- dem appraisal of the situation by outside experu. Lien we might all lam just how serious the situation was and whether or not the plant warranted closing. Good thought. But where, we wondered, are such exotic creatures to be found? Emissions are in addition to background radiation. The radiation doses due to emissions are for the most exposed persons living near the station They would typically apply to persons living just outside the station boundari who are at their residences 24 hours a day, who drink local water, and eat local fish and produce. The doses were calculated using actual data from routine analysis of air, water, fish and vegetation sam- ples, as well as station emission data Most persons would actually receive less than the doses indi- cated because they have different eating habits or live farther away from the station Radiation doses decrease significantly as the dis- tance from the station increases Less than 610 of the radiation dose received from the station was due to liquid emissions, while the remainder was a result of airborne emissions For further information, please call us at 1-800-668-5284. On the high- ways people look; while getting gas, the attendant asks, "What kind of car is that? Is it an antique?" Quickly the answering reply comes, "No. In fact, it is a 1996." The attendant replies, "Well whatever it is, it sure is nice." For an all -wheel drive vehicle, the SVX certainly has style, comfort and speed. Not to mention incredi- ble handling. Subaru calls it a "Stunning blend of luxury, style and performance." I must agree on all these adjectives. After driving the SVX, you no longer look at on and off ramps the same. The quick response steering makes those sweeping corners challenging and fun. Subaru's top-of-the-line 4-wbeel drive vehicle is like a mini Cadillac inside, with leather seats, suede trim and lots of wood gram parading. Designer Gwrgetb Giuguro knew who he was doing in Italy. The cen- tra consul is equipped with a CD player, AM/FM cassette ad digital dinrafe control, an hidden by a wood grain, easy -touch door. With beamed 6 -way power no and a tilt and telescope Meting Wheel, it is really easy 10 on com- fortable for a long ride. But yon will find yourself rum mhos quiddy, with the 33 lilte, 24 valve engine patting out 230 borsepower. Bowe, forgo is mote *orw than horsepower and this is tura slouch, with 228 ft lbs of get up and 10. The aerodynamics of the SVX are sleek and low, having only .29cd (Coefficient of Dug). What that means is bow well the car glides through the air, and bow much drag occurs at the rear end of the vehicle. The SVX's window within a win- dow design eliminates any wind noise; it also makes it difficult to have a conversation with a person on the outside. And, handing items through the window is harder, because only a small portion of the window goes down; if you sit dose, that opening is almost behind you. Guns Flag: • Interior leather and suede gives a great smell, and is extremely comfortable. • Excellent handling, very power- ful, with lots of torque. and fin to drive. • Everyone looks, and loves the Style of car. • Great sound system — CD, cas- sene and AM/FM. Black Flag: ` - • Cup holders too small and badly placed in glove box. If you had another item in there, no drink WORM fit. • Didn't really like the window in a window; even though so wind noise was a great design idea. • Sunroof is great, but it's only a sunroof, there is so glass to see aut of. 'If you are in the market for a fun lo drive vehicle, that has style and fuesse, the Sniarn SVX is the car for yon. Its goal is to draw attention to osteoporosis, raise funds for research and educa- tion, and encourage Canadians to adopt a healthy lifestyle to build better bones. For details on the walk, call Loma at 428-9392. Osteoporosis — a women's disease, or at least one that you get when you are older. Right? Not necessarily. This is just typical of the myths that are prevalent in our under- standing of an illness that affects one in four women over the age of 50 and one in ten men. In fact, an estimated 2.5 million Canadians are at risk of developing osteoporo- sis. The ailment causes bones to become thin and brittle and fracture easily — often without trauma. Among the causes are inadequate lifetime calcium intake and accelerated bone mass loss after menopause. And it has been detected in persons who have not even reached the age of 40. .Area residents, who endure this disease, have been forced to travel to Toronto to get informatim proper exercise programs and caring support in the past. The Brockstone, a 12 -storey (plus penthouse) high- rise on Pickering Parkway, is already 60 per cent sold, with more than a year to move -in time. The secret to the success of the development is the low carrying charges, attractive maintenance fees and, of course, location, location, location. "Those are definitely the prime selling points," says Keith Graham, a sales representative with The Brockstone. "The units are really going fast." Located right in Pickering's downtown core, the building backs onto Brock Road and is within walking distance of Pickering Town Centre and other shopping, the town hall, library, recreation complex and East Side Park. Brockstone sits adjacent to an existing neighbor- hood; Highway 401 is but a short drive away as well. The success of The Brockstone follows on the heels on the enormous success of The Brownstone, a town- house complex right across the street. That development was fully sold and occupied just three months ago. There are nine styles of suites offered at The Brockstone, from 636 square feet to 966 square feet. Prices start at $93,900. One style - the one -bedroom - is already sold out, Keith says. "The low maintenance fees have attracted a lot of peo- ple; they average about $155 per month, including all utilities." Another selling point is $2,500 in luxury upgrades, available to buyers for a limited time. The mortgages are as low as $688 per month, plus taxes, utilities and maintenance fees. Keith adds, bring- ing the total cost to between $850 and $1,000 per month. "With five per cent down, that's just like rent. The big difference is, of course, you own it." Other models offered at the development include one -bedroom with sunroom and two bedroom styles. The suites come fully air-conditioned, with five appli- ances and underground parking. Many suites also have generous balconies, enclosed sunrooms or private terraces as well. New for this weekend is a brand new model suite, The Armani, an innovative design that has Bev Rosner of builders The Rockport Croup "very excited." "We're glad the people who have seen the suites liked it so much and we look forward to seeing new people this weekend," she enthuses. "We're just very excited by the whole project." For more information on The Brockstone, Pickering's hottest affordable housing project, call (905) 428-1288. It's time to make the move to The Brockstone. At The Brockstone in Pickering you can OWN a brand new condominium suite for as lithe as $86900- 11 a Included at this price is oll in FREE Upgrades featuring 5 appliances, central air and more. Plus, for a limited time only, you will also receive a choice of: $2,W in additional luxury upgrades, --`0 or $1,5W off your closing costs g Sales Office Hours: Mon. -Thurs. 1-8 Sat., Sun. & Holidays 11-5, Closed Friday (1151421-1211.
