Summer's
Summer's Not a Vacation from Learning
As summer vacation
approaches, families often
make plans to put away
the deadlines that come
with schoolwork and look
forward to a less pressured
schedule for leaming activ-
ities. While this is perfectly
appropriate, parents
should remember that
summer vacation isn't an
excuse for children to take
a "vacation" from learning.
According to Lori
McIntosh, Director of the
Whitby Sylvan Learning
Center, skips mastered dur-
ing the school year fade
with disuse. Loss of con-
tent retention begins with-
in 24 to 48 hours unless
the new information is
reinforced or applied
immediately. After a
month without reinforce-
ment, most of what your
child has learned recently
is lost. "Imagine how little
your child will retain from
June to September if you
don't make education a
year-long priority," says
Lori McIntosh.
Summer should and can
be as much a time of
learning growth as any
other time of year 9 par -
encs let their children know
that structured learning
activities are an important
part of the summer vaca-
tion plan.
Lori offers some tips for
parents to stimulate their
child's interest and span
the summer leamirg gap...
*Speak with your child's
counselor before summer
to determine academic
strengths and weaknesses.
This will help you prepare
for the school year ahead.
For example, if your child
is shy, he may need sum-
mer camp or sports activi-
ties to help enhance self-
confidence. A bright child
may be bored with school
but would enthusiastically
participate in a science or
computer camp'
-Stimulate curiosity and
love of learning by plan-
ning family trips to the
zoo, museums, your local
newspaper office, the
beach and other places
packed with learning
oppo .
*Have your child write
to grandparents, family
members who live far
away or pen pals. This
activity will tell you a lot
Sylvan
better,
about achievement in lan-
guage, spelling and read-
ing. If your child is old
enough, have him/her
keep a diary or write a let-
ter to the editor of your
local newspaper about an
issue that concerns
him/her.
*Develop a reward sys-
tem for meeting specific
goals, such as reading
three books or cooking
five meals.
•In some cases, parents
need help providing neces-
sary learning opportuni-
ties. Consider enrolling
your child in a summer
enrichment program such
as those provided by
Sylvan Learning Centers.
Bottom line: there are
plenty of learning opportu-
nities for you and your
child to explore during the
summer months. By using
summer as a time for
encouraging continued
learning, you can help set
the stage for a sound per-
formance next fall

Make sureY ou vote
With the provincial election tomorrow, we
hope you've taken the time to study the candi-
dates, understand what they and their parties
stand for and have decided who gets your vote.
That's because, while some are willing to
insult your intelligence by telling you how to
vote, we're not going to do that.
We've reached a definite turning point in
Ontario; one that will make or break the
province.
But it's still up to you to decide, based on
your understanding of what each candidate and
party will do once elected.
In Durham West, we have three well quali-
fied candidates, each of whom could personally
do a good job for us.
So, your vote comes down to your personal
beliefs, not how we tell you to vote.
It's patronizing, at the very least, to believe
that voters can't think for themselves. Of
course you can. And we hope you will.
The only thing we will tell you to do is
VOTE.
That's the only way you can have a say in
what goes on. It's your opportunity, and it only
comes every few years, to get across your opin-
ion of how things should be run.
If you don't vote, you can't complain, regard-
less of who wins.
When you do vote, you're letting our politi-
cians know that you're watching them and are
ready to point out where they've failed.
The polls are open until 8 p.m. Thursday.
Take advantage of our democracy and cast your
ballot based on your own educated opinion.

Busy times in towns
Between the Frenchman's Bay
Festival and the 25th Anniversary of
Ajax Home Week, there are going to
be a lot of busy people in Ajax and
Pickering for the next two weeks.
In fact, you'd drive yourself crazy
trying to attend everything. I know, I
did a few years ago.
The best thing to do is check out
the special Ajax Home Week section
and the Frenchman's Bay Festival
story in today's paper, check off what
you want to attend and then drive
yourself crazy.
Both events offer lots of fun for
the whole family and it doesn't cost
much, if anything, to join in. I'll see
you there.

A short response to the Letter to
the Editor last week from Claude
Gagne regarding jet -skis on
Frenchman's Bay. No, Claude, we
haven't been fooled into thinking
there's an operating ban on the Bay.
But, effectively banning the jet -skis
from launching from MTRCA land
means there aren't many, if any, other
places for launching.
I honestly can't see what enjoy-

People want change in government
By Janet Eamrr,
As I've canvassed the com-
munity during this election, I've
heard loud and clear that people
want change in the way their
government is run. Voters have
been given three distinct choio-
es. The NDP promise more of
the same, and blame others for
their current financial troubles.
The Liberal have tried to
promise something for every-
one.
Mike Harris is the only lead-
er offering real change in how
government will operate. He
knows that our families work
harder than ever but never seem
to get further ahead. He wants
to change the philosophy that
government knows best how to
solve all of our problems, that it
can spend our money better
than we can.
That is why he released his
Common Sense plan last year, so
voters could examine and under-
stand his proposals. 7be plan
will cut taxes to create jobs and
economic growth - the average
family will save $2,000 per year.
7be plan will reform welfare and
end unfair hiring quotas. It will
reduce the size and cost of gov-
ernment
overnment and balance Ontario's
budget
To guarantee this, Mike
Harris will bring in legislation to
prohibit tax increases unless
they are approved by a referen-
dum. In addition, cabinet minis-
terV pay win be cut if de5rit taw
gets are not met.
Most importantly, our plan
will protect funding for health
cane, claesroonAxwed education
funding and Law enforcement.
Voters tell me they think we
have our priorities right.
But putting this challenging
plan in place will take committed
individuals with the ability to do
the job. My diverse experience -
in small business, in the provio-
dial government, in health care
and with volunteer agencies -
give me the skills required to get
the job done.
If you believe as I do, that
Ontario needs real change, then
I ask for your support on elec-
tion day.
Three local issues for Liberals
By Joe Diclewn,
Liftral Party
As tomorrow is election day.
I want to share with you my
commitment to work on three
knues of particular significance
to Ain and Pickering.
The future of the Ajax -
Pickering Hospital is important
to ag of us who five in this riding.
In our fad growing communities
we need a full service hospital. I
will fight to have Ap*Pickmng
General Hospital designated as
the firaservice hospital for the
western port of Durham Region.
The new wing doubled the size
of the hospital, but NDP furdiing
cuts hoe not o* closed beds.
but have prevented some beds
from ever opening.
The McLeod government
will dismantle the NDP Interim
Waste Authority and give back
to municipal governments the
power to make responsible deci.
sions on waste disposal. The
plans will also give local councils
the power to stop Metro Toronto
from shipping their garbage to
Pickering. Local government
will again be able to effectively
plan waste disposal for our
waste.
I will wont hand to speed up
the widening of the 401 to both
Ajax and Pickering. The expan-
sion will benefit both local bu w
ness and the many residents
who comrarte every day.
I am committed to this corm
munity. It is my home, it is
where my wde and I have raised
our family and where my busy
nese has grown and prospered I
have enjoyed my volunteer work
with many community groups. I
have served in local govern-
ment, as a school trustee, local
councillor, regional councillor
and as a Deputy Mayor of Ajax. l
believe the Liberal Party will
provide good and effective gow
emmert for Ontario. It is impot,
tart, as you decide to cast your
baaot, that you carefindy consid.
er the quality of your local car
date you will elect to represent
you. I believe that I have the
experience and the commitment
to serve you. I ask for your sup
port tomorrow so I can serve
you at Queen's Park.

their hard work and

to you, the people of
Ajax, for the support
you have provided the
various service clubs.

sticks to original goals
Happy 25th Anniversary
Twenty-five years ago
seems like only yesterday!
That's when Bryan Hilker,
then Ajax Kinsmen presi-
dent, first addressed what
is now known as Ajax
Home Week with Doug
Menzie and myself.
The rest is historyl It
got off to a quick start and
has remained an extremely
popular event ever since in
Ajax.
Five major service orga-
nizations including
Kinsmen, Legion, Lions,
Optimists and Rotary have
been leaders in our com-
munity and are the prime
reason Ajax Home Week
has been so successfuL
After 25 years, I am
pleased to see our original
goals still in place.
They are:
a YO

. s Needed-
8E,
1 - To say thank you to
all the people of Ajax who
support the numerous ser-
vice organizations' projects
in town through the year:
2 - That activities be for
everyone regardless of
gender, religion, race, age
or personal means.
3 - To promote the town
of Ajax regionally and on
an international basis, the
town we call "Home", and
to encourage former Ajax
residents to return to Ajax
for a visit.
This year's 25th
Anniversary edition of
"Home Week" mirrors the
ever changing face of our
community.
It is wonderful to see so
many new multicultural,
sports, youth and commu-
nity groups help take a
leadership role this year.
Thanking all volunteers
who work so hard, and
looking forward to seeing
each and every one of you
during this 25th Ajax
Home Week, I am,

The Optimist Club of
Ajax was chartered on
August 19, 1981.
We are part of an inter-
national service organiza-
tion with over 4,100 clubs
and more than 172,000
members in the United
States, Canada and the
Caribbean. The Optimist
motto is "Friend of Youth"
and in this, we aim many of
our activities to serve the
youth of Ajax.
Some of this year's activ-
ities include:
- Annual Scout, Cub and
Beaver camp - September
- Youth Appreciation
Week - 2nd week in
September
- Food Bank Christmas
Baskets - December
- Annual Girl Guide,
Brownie and Sparks
Weekend - January
- Annual Bike Safety
Rodeo - May
- Big Brother's Picnic -
Summer
A very important pro-
ject which we have under-
taken is the "Kid's Town
Safety Village". In this
regard, the village is
designed to provide Road
Safety Instruction, Vehicle
and Bicycle Safety
Instruction, Crossing
Guard Education and
numerous other activities
for the youth of our com-
munity. For those who
would lice to find out more
about this major project,
feel free to contact Optimist
Ken McKenzie at 6835290.
Many of the wives of the
Optimist members are
involved in the community
through the "Opti -Mrs".
This group operates inde-
pendently and financially
supports "Apple House" for
abused women and chil-
dren in the Ajax area.
If you are interested in
getting involved in our
community and would like
to know more about the
Optimist Club or the Opti -
Mrs, please call Optimist
Bob Curtis at 6832606.
We hope that all resi-
dents of Ajax and visitors to
Ajax enjoy the Home Week
celebrations.
Tim Wood,
Optimist President

if Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital wants to
stay on the cutting edge of
surgical advancements, it
has to pay the price.
Case in point is the pur-
chase of a portable x-ray
image instensifier — a C -
Arm. The C -Arm allows sur-
geons to see live x-ray
images, right in the operat-
ing room, and is especially
useful for setting broken
bones and placing pins in
broken hips. It makes
surgery safer but it also
costs about $100,000 and is
not covered by government
funding.
Enter firefighters from
Pickering and Ajax, who
have launched a campaign
to pay for the equipment.
The firefighters, with the
support of the two mayors,
have committed their
fundraising efforts for the
next few years to the hospi-
tal.
The two fire depart-
ments haven't wasted any
time in getting the fund
raising underway. Already
plazuied is a beef barbecue
and dance July 29 and the
traditional 'boot" drive in
September.

Pickering High School's
Devon Davis shared the
spotlight at last weekend's
Ontario track and field
championships in Kingston
with Dunbarton's Shelly -
Ann Brown, each bringing
home two gold medals.
Davis jumped to gold in
both the junior boy's long
jump and triple jump and
added a bronze as part of
the Trojan 4x100 -metre
relay team. Midget sprint
sensation Brown raced to
gold in both the 100
metres and the 80 -metre
hurdles.
Brown's midget learn-
mate
eammate Krissy Liphardt also
had a good meet, winning
a gold for Dunbarton in
the 400 metres and adding
a silver in the 200 metres.
The performance by
Brown and Liphardt
helped the Spartans cap-
ture the midget girls team
championship and tie for
second in overall girls,
while Davis helped his
Pickering junior boys team
to a second place finish.
The Trojans were overall
boys champ two years ago.
The only other medal
for local athletes was won
by Pickering's midget boys
4x100 -metre relay team,
who earned a bronze.
Other local finalists
included Pickering senior
Zayd Rouse (6th, 100
metres), Pickering midget
Dwayne Lucas (8th, 200
metres), St. Mary junior
Jonathan Phillips (6th, 200
metres) and Pine Ridge
midget Jason Hagan (8th,
pole vault). Pickering's
senior boys and midget
girls 4x100 -metre relay
teams and Dunbarton's
junior girls 4x100 -metre
relay team also qualified
for the provincial finals.
