Beginning in January, a group of Grade 9 _idents from Exeter High School in Ajax will be volunteering their time in a number of area community service projects. Hometown baseball hero Nigel Wilson of the Forda Marlins will today headline an of;:cial launch of the school's citizenship volunteer program. Through the assistance of the Ajax Rotary and Optimist Clubs and the Durham Region Association for Volunteer Administration, students will be assigned to a number of community service projects. Students will be asked, during the school term, to commit a minimum of 10 hours towards some aspect of volunteer work before or after regular school hours, during weekends and holidays. lt's expected that 50 of approximately 250 Grade 9 Exeter students will take part. Theyll participate or become volunteer members of a local service club or organization. Among other things, students will assist in the Ajax Santa Claus parade, scouts weep a horseback riding program for disabled youngsters, the Salvation Army foodbank, Big Sisters and Metropolitan Toronto Zoo environmental program. Ministry officials told town staff in mid-October they are "aware of the visibility problem" and w l attempt to alleviate it b , removing a 25 -.:etre section of concrete barrier be -ween the road and the sidewalk. "This is a very dangerous situation," said Ward 4 Jim McMaster, during the Nov. 15 council meeting. "We're just asking for a problem and this is a very good solution." In May. Ajax council asked the ministry to look into the problem. Drivers hurning right onto Harwood Avenue from the eastbound Hwy. 401 have difficulty seeing oncoming southbound Harwood Avenue traffic because of the size of the barrier, council was told. There have been three accidents at the intersection in the past three years directly related to the visibility problems. The work, which will be funded by the transport nn:stry, is expected to take place early next year. THE BO -55 IS AWAY I I vwrs sronn Our 3 Day Sale has been extended since the boss is away. Schoo! prncipai Lynn Parr, w:rio has been a key player is developing the project, said the citizens` -4 volunteer program will encourage a sense of personal responsibility. -We need (students) to develop skills to get along with other people and be responsible citizens," Parr said during an interview. "We figure it's a a young person is going need. I guess the message is that the school is part of the community we serve." According to Kay, post- secondary schools and private businesses consider community service and volunteer work as important prerequisites. Parr agreed these experiences are part of a well-rounded education. The program has generated a good degree of support. Kay said a number of students have expressed a strong interest and given their commitment. Area service clubs are solidly behind the project. "We have been overwhelmed by the support of the community to help make this a reality'," principal Parr said. "We are starting small and thinking big." "We hope it (the program) will really take off and sustain itself." she added. "Ultimately we'd like to make it part of the compulsory curriculum." Purdue -Frederick Executive Vice - President John Rider, whose company has raised $17,000 in two previous Ajax and Pickering United Way campaigns, says there's no mystery at all. The success has a lot to do with the pharmaceutical company's outlook. "I think early on we gave a message to our employees that we are aware of the community, we are supportive of the community and we lave some sense of community responsibility," Rider said during a recent interview. He also credits the hellpful people at the local United Way office. "I was quite impressed by how the United Way came in and quickly put us on track," Rider said. The United Way helped by providing fundraising ideas, explaining what the organization does for local community service agencies united way and outlining what the campaign objective is, he said. Three years ago, when. Purdue - Frederick decided to launch a corporate campaign., the company carefully investigated where United Way money went and who the dollars served. Rider noted that a survey of company employees showed more than 70 per cent willing to participate. In its first-ever United Way campaign, Purdue -Frederick — located on Granite Court in Pickering — raised an impressive $7,000. Not bad for a company of 100 employees. The following year, Purdue - Frederick did even better — raising $10,000 through pay-oii deductions and an assortment of fundraising actiti:ties. This year, the company has set an $11,000 goal. Sorne of the company's fundraising activities have included weekly 50-50 draws, dress -down days (where ;'nose who don't participate pay a fine), a dress -up Halloween Day, and an assortment of raffles. Activities are monitored each year and those that don't work are dropped while those that do are built upon. Provincial Liberals and Progressive Conservatives joined forces Monday demanding that the IWA be disbanded. New Democrat critics also called for a moratorium on a dump search "until all alternatives have been explored." Wiseman called opposition members "hypocrites," say ng both parties had previously selected Pickering dumps without a public process. He refused to retract the criticism and was asked to leave the chambers 'x the House Speaker. Wiseman, who was elected in 1990 on an environmental ticket. defended :he IWA process. "Hated as it may be :n some circles, is does one thing that I believe in strongly,- Wiseman said during the House debate. "It no longer allows poLticiars to pick where dump sites go. No longer can politicians decide what would be the most beneficial spot poetically." Earlier last week, Wiseman defended the IWA at Queen's Park saying :he authority is at "arm's length" from politicians and therefore better able to decide on the future of Durham's garbage. "By no means am I saying I m happy a landfill site is going to be in Pickering, but at least there will be environmental assessments," Wiseman told The Bay News. "When politicians make decisions you have no hearings whatsoever." Wiseman said he has no way of knowing if the site selected by the IWA — adjacent to the current Brock West dump — was the best location available for the future dump. He noted that he trusted the Ministry of Environment, who will be conducting next year's environmental assessment hearings, to make that decision. Disabled children's games Durham Region Police host the 9th annual disabled children s games on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 1867 Valley Farm Rd. Its expected Leat more than 100 disabled young athletes from across Southern Ontario will participate. Long distance swir-uner Carlos Costa will be on hand as special guest. Competition will be ongoing all day including a highlight wheelchair rugby match between the youngsters and the Durham Region Police. Every child will be awarded a trophy or medal.. The Region has fired off a letter to the ministry demanding that the province make the completion of road improvements on Steeles Avenue, between McCowan Road in Scarborough and the Pickering border, a top priority. The three -to -four-year project, with a price tag of more than $34 million, has been held up for more than 300 days while the ministry processes an environmental study report. Ironically, the transport ministry is willing to fund 70 per cent of the project, regional works chairman John Aker said, adding that "frustration is everywhere." Durham, with the opening of the William Twelvetrees bridge Nov. 3, has completed its share of the project. A sure sign of Christmas arrives in Ajax this weekend as Santa Claus pays his annual visit to John Brouwer Gardening Centre on Bayly Avenue at Lakeridge Road. Plan to take the whole family for a visit to Brouwer Gardening Centre over the next four weekends every Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be lots to see and do. The kids can get their pictures taken with Santa and visit all of the interesting and friendly reindeer and other animals that make the gardening centre their permanent home. Both grown-ups and youngsters alike can enjoy the spectacular colorful displays in John Brouwer's Christmas room featuring some of the best displays of decorated Christmas trees and seasonal ornaments in Durham Region. Other great activities include Brouwer's petting zoo, a skating rink (when weather permits), and the snack bar. Make it an afternoon and visit the shopping area and greenhouses. It's a great family outing and one of the best ways to welcome the holiday season. You simply have to get out there and live it. That can be a harsh education for students weaned on book knowledge and theory in relatively safe and controlled environments. In school, students would never be exposed to such important things like helping disabled youngsters at a riding school, working in a foodbank, or organizing a community parade. That is, until today. Exeter High School in Ajax is set to take a pioneering role in community and social awareness among its students. The school's citizenship volunteer program, which asks Grade 9 students to spend 10 hours in some aspect of volunteer work, will provide a taste of real life :for those willing to get involved. The program gets its official launch today. Community awareness and social responsibility are essential elements missing from standard institutional learning. Subjective instruction is the traditional strength of a school system. What's been lacking are opportunities to build character. This innovative Exeter project gives students a chance to reap enormous personal benefits through a program that encourages initiative taking, involvement and empathy. Educators have been looking to the community in recent years in an effort to teach the lessons that can't be taught in a classroom. It's been a promising trend. For instance, co-operative education — where youngsters learn by doing through time spent in the workplace — is a brilliant concept. Most of us can only imagine how our own lives would have been affected if we were given the same opportunity. An age-old argument suggests school may provide a solid basis, but real learning doesn't happen until you begin experiencing life. Programs like Exeter's citizenship volunteer project are a step toward combining the best of both learning worlds. _ "71 t 0____ ';ir ,°WXY aaIR 7144, q y Pet.r NJoc^a, BRUSH WORK: Janice Williams regularly drives to Pickering from her home in Port Perry to attend adult art classes at the Recreation Complex. Final figures will be available when a9 the merchandise is picked up. We would like to thank all the local businesses who contributed their services, time and products. A special thanks goes to the Town of Ajax who donated its community centre and facilities for us to hold the auction, a squash membership and a Christmas Light Tour by Ajax Transit. The Town of Pickering pitched in with a season's pass to Pickering Museum Village, two family swim passes and a 10th anniversary pass to one of five super programs (tennis, squash, racquetball, fitness assessment and seasonal health club membership or passport to fitness). Without the assistance of Maclean Hunter Cable 10 in Ajax and Trillium Cable 10 in Pickering we would not have been able to hold a TV Auction and bring some great bargains to the residents of Ajax and Pickering. Mary Cook, TVAuction Co-ordinator — Letters — j It happened in ' Dear editor: I have just read an article in your Nov. 10 newspaper called Highspeed highway chase ends to Bay Ridges. The intersection of Oklahoma Drive and iMarksbury Road is firmly within the boundaries of j our Fairport Beach Ratepayers Association and has been for over 60 years. I was looking at letters and minutes today that date back to 1929. I was always under the impression that Bay Ridges was considered to be the east side of Frenchman's Bay, and the communities of Westshore and Fairport Beach occupying the west side of the bay. Our association is trying to maintain the heritage of a stable community that has a very real Fa i rpo rt Beach history and hopefully an ongoing future. We have recently, finalized over three years of negotiations with MTRCA whereby they have attained our lakefront that will, ank Petticoat Creek Park with Frenchman's Bay West Park at Westshore Bouievard. Area representatives will introduce a motion, likely on Dec. 8 during a region council meeting, seeking help to pay approximately $350,000 spent so far on consultants, lawyers and other expenses. The money has been spent since the Interim Waste Authority announced its short-list of landfill sites for Durham Region. Four of five were located in Pickering. A regional contribution of $150,000 maximum is being suggested by Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs and Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson. The town will seek a further $200,000 regional contribution since it expects to pay at least $400,000 more in the continuing Pickering landfill fight. Arthurs told The Bay News he is optimistic Durham councillors will be in favor of the proposal. "Do I think the region will support the motion? I certainly hope so," he said. Pickering has already spent almost a quarter -million dollars over the $100,000 budgeted towards the dump fight. With environmental assessment hearings on the EE1 preferred site at least a year away, Arthurs predicted that Pickering will easily spend $400,000 more. Arthurs and Johnson are targeting the waste reserve fund, established prior to the last provincial election, for the needed regional share of cash. The fund is currently used for recycling initiatives such as composting, blue boxes and general 39s promotion. Support the United Way Abu "An avalanche Of thrifts." IWA decision reversal "not out of the question" By Glenn Hendry It's not much, but Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs will take whatever good news he can get from the Interim Waste Authority (IWA). IWA chairman Walter Pitman told Arthurs, Vaughan's Lorna Jackson, and Caledon's Norm Calder — the three mayors whose communities were chosen for future dump sites — that it's "not out of the question" that the IWA might reverse its decision to ship future garbage to their municipalities. "There was some modest indication by Pitman," Arthws said after a meeting Friday morning. "At least it appeared there was a little bit of movement on the IWA side." "Of course, Pitman has no real power so we want a resolution from the (environment) minister (Bad Wildman) that states the province will at least entertain the idea of alternatives." The three mayors are demanding that the province perforin a full Environmental LITTLE PEOPLE'S PLAY SCHOOL INC. 33 Falby Court, Aj ax Full M fart -time spaces available 3 Months to S Years 428-9909 Assessment on all three chosen sites, abandon the entire IWA process, and consider such options as incineration and hauling the garbage by rail. The mayors also said the IWA did not meet the proposed site selection criteria when it chose the sites. In a press release, Calder called the Caledon site "a disaster economically." Arthurs agreed and told The Bay News that the dumps will be "a disincentive to economic renewal" in the GTA. Despite the high tempers that raged when the IWA announced the dump s; -e locations Nov. 14 in Woodbridge, Arthurs said the mood at Friday's meeting was calm. "Today was not a day for demonstration. Today was not a day to yell and scream," he said. There's stili a long way to go." Ar lyras said he is still "reeeng" from the announcement that Pickering is, once again, the comma^.ity of choice for a new landfill site for Durham Region. But his council, as well as those in Vaughan and Caledon, are Nelson's Hobbies 144 Harwood Ave. S !Downtown Ajax 683-0351 "Please give generously this season. The first step is to prepare for the environmental assessments, expected to begin late next year, and to work with community groups such as Pickering-A;ax Citizens Together for the environment. Arthurs said he will be working with Jackson and Calder — as well as other Greater Toronto Area (GTA) mayors — on a strategy in the next few weeks. 'This is an area of common concern t at goes beyond the ^-nidpal boundar es." he said. The Pickering mayor also hopes to get the whole landfi'.l issue on a poetical agenda next year by setting up future meetings between the GTA mayors and the leaders of the provincial Liberals anal Progressive Conservatives. Small and Midsize Car Segment. "We really emphasized body rigidity," Boddie says. The rectum: A stiffer body gives engineers more leeway to tune the chassis and make it behave the way they want it to under varying conditions. "People will notice the new Mustang's manners the most on rough roads and tight turns.- Boddie says. It really holds the roads." The quest for body stiffness meant eliminating the hatchback design. Hatchbacks have a large opening in the back of the body to accommodate the lift -gate. It is verydifficult, if tilt impossible, to build a torsionally stiff 3 -door hatch -back," Boddie says. The 1994 Mustang coupe holy structure is some 56 percent stiffer in bending and 44 percent stiffer in torsion than the design it replaces—with minimal weight gain. The new convertible—to be manufactured on the sante Dearborn Ascmbly Plant line as the coupe—is even more improved. Bending stiffness is 65 percent greater, and the convertible is a remarkable 80 percent %tifl'cr in torsion. The sleeker aerodynamic design of the car, along with the tighter body, results in a convertible "that's very quiet with the top down," Boddie says. "You can cruise along at freeway speeds and hold a normal conversation with your passenger without raising your voice." The convertible top is level with the deck, which is very nice. The care looks good, even if the convertible boot isn't put on," Boddie says. Kris Christensen, Manager, Mustang Chassis Systems, says the team's goal was to achieve significant improve- ments in both ride and handling, even though the two often contradict one another." "When we were finished, we achieved more than we initially thought possible, in large pan because the new body structure is so much stiffer than before." I )TLIGHT on.f Quality, service fuels Superior's With more than 40 years of experience, including 35 in Durham Region, Superior Propane has earned a reputation for superior quality and service. That reputation has made the company — with branches in all 10 provinces — Canada's leading marketer of propane and propane - related products. "We pride ourselves as being the industry leader in almost every aspect of propane," said Calvin Thorn, the manager of the Whitby branch. "We have an excellent service and quality record in Durham." Superior Propane started out in 1953 with three small branches in !Maple (just north of Toronto), Carleton Place (west of Ottawa) and Stratford, Ontario. During the next six years, the company added six more branches. including the Whitby operation which is still at its original location at 505 Victoria St. E., southeast of the Brock Street exit off Highway 401. There's now more than 100 company branches serving more than 200,000 customers across the country. Superior Propane sells, rents, installs and services a complete range of brand-name propane appliance equipment. Virtually any appliance is available in propane, said Thorn. The Whitby branch specializes in residential equipment, such as ranges, fireplaces, wall space -heaters and barbecues. The branch also takes pride in providing 24-hour service to its customers. Superior Propane has been owned by a number of companies over the years and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Norcen Energy Resources Limited — a Canadian - The Bay News, November 24,1993 27 success owned, Calgary -based, natural resource enterprise. In 1988 the company opened a branch in Charlottetown, P.E.I., to complete its presence in all 10 Canadian provinces. With the purchase of Skelgas in 1990 — a propane marketer with operations in 11 midwestern U.S. states — Superior Propane is now the third largest retail propane marketer in North America. Thorn, who has managed the Whitby branch since September, said he and his staff have worked hard to maintain Superiors' loyal customer base and the company's reputation for quality and service, created after almost two generations in the region. "We've built a name for ourselves with superior, high-quality propane products and senice," he said. 'dile mean to keep that name as the best in Dur f,ar,."
