three years ago when the whole family — about 25 of us — got
together for Christmas.
All the kids wanted to open their presents right away. You can
picture the chaos — it was a sight to behold," laughed Wiseman, the
New Democratic Party MPP for Durham West.
"But it was a pretty special Christmas, having the whole family
together. The kids were at the right age, too, so it was a very nice
Christmas."
Jim Witty, Ajax mayor
The first Christmas with our granddaughter stands out, I guess,
11 years ago. After having the children grow up and leave the
home, having a granddaughter here, and watching her doing the
same things her mother did 20 years before was pretty special."
"I remember her having more fun playing with the boxes than with
the presents. That's exactly what her mother did when she was that
age." .. .
Louise Far:, chairperson, Durham Board of Education
'There isn't one Christmas that stands out, but I remember the

We were a big family and we didn't have a Iot of money. So my

"No maner how comfortable we think we are, we can't forget that

time of the year. We try to develop a sense of community and
extend the family to the conn, unity."

"As far as I am concerned, the Lord has been very good, our

"I feel, persoraily, Christmas is about the joy of giving and the

Compromise
in townhouse
A compromise is close at
hand in the plan by Tridel to
build townhouses beside a
highrise cmiorninium.
The plan has been opposed
by neighboring highrise residents
who want 185 units and 70 per
cent of the land left as open
space. Tridel says the best it can
do is 184 units and 68 per cent
near
plan
open space. Pickering Card
passed a motion this week
accepting 184 units and 70 per
cent open space.
Both Tridel and residents have
threatened to take the matter to
the OMB, but it seems a final
compromise will be worked out
as the project goes to site plan
approval.

Board unhappy with fact finder conclusions
At least one side of the labor
contract impasse between the
Durham Board of Education and
its secondary school teachers is
not happy with
recommendations of a
provincially -appointed fact
finder.
In a press release issued by
the board on Dec. 21, a report
by Toronto lawyer Heather
Crisp was criticized for many of
its conchisions.
The fact finder concluded that
the labor deal currently being
offered to secondary school
teachers by the Durham Region
Board of Education is not
sufficient to build an agreement.
However, Crisp praised both
sides for their good working
relationship and congenial
approach during negotiations.
Th.stees feel the fact finder's
re comr- endat ions do not take
into accourt economic realities,"
the press release said. 7 ne
board feels fact finder Heather
Crisp has shown no indication
that she is aware of the
recession -torn community's
reluctance to see property taxes
rise further."
The fact finder report was
made public on Dec. 21. Both
the board and the Ontario
Secondary School Teacher's
Federation (OSSTF) District 17
were provided with copies of the
report on Dec. 2.
While she refused to offer any

term, Crisp cautioned teachers
about accepting a 1 -year labor
deal proposed by the board.
Teachers have coLmtered with a
2 -year agreement.
"Che risk to the teachers of a
1 -year agreement is that
conditions will be worse in
1993-1994," the fact finder
said in her report. "Since the
announcement of the province
on Nov. 26 that funding to
boards will be zero per cent in
1994, the teachers should
consider their alternatives
carefully."
Crisp recommended a 1 per
cent salary increase for teachers
(based on the Ontario Consumer
Price Index from June).
Teachers had asked for a 3.1
per cent raise over one year.
Tl e Board countered with a .5
per cent increase in February
1993, another .5 per cent in
September and another .5 per
cent in April 1994.
In a press release last week,
the board called the fact finder's
proposal "inappropriate in a
time of great financial restraint."
According to the board, a
highly -qualified secondary
teacher with 10 year's
experience earns $64,345 a
year.
Fact finder Crisp also
commented on the board's
decision to build a $15 million
education centre.
"The significance of the
education centre is that the
board is not afraid to make high
profile spending decisions, so
long as it feels that they are
publicly acceptable."
Trustees say the new
education centre will have no
impact on the 1993 budget and
will save $3 million during the
first 20 years.
Other fact finder
recommendations included a
proposal to give teachers one
personal leave day per year,
chargeable to sick leave.
Teachers have asked for two
such days. Trustees say the
practice will cost $184,000 in
additional supply teacher costs.
Crisp also recommended no
change to teacher staffing and
workload. Teachers have
recommended hiring ar.
additional five teachers to
facilitate the implementation of
lest earning Grade 9.
With the exception of
removing co-insurance on a
basic dental plan, the fact finder
recommended all other benefits
remain the sane. A proposal by
teachers to require 100 per cent
payment of benefits during
parental leave was also rejected
by Crisp.
According to the board gess
release, both sides continue to
negotiate. One meeting has
been held since the fact finder
report was presented in early
December. Another meeting is
set for early January.

The 55 -day strike at
Rotherglen Detention Centre
ended last Wednesday with both
sides happy to just be back at
work.
Negotiations had been stalled
between management and the
30 -member staff at the
maximum -security youth
detention centre in Ajax and
tensions were high during most
of the strike. But all that
changed after two marathon
sessions with a provincial
mediator Dec. 11 and 14.
The two sides managed to
hammer out an agreement and
staff, members of the Ontario
Public Service Employees Union
(OPSEU) Local 585, ratified the
deal Dec. 16. The board of
directors for Kennedy House —
the administrators for
Rotherglen — also approved the
deal Wednesday. The contract
was approved by a 4-1 margin.
It was a first contract for the
local.
OPSEU representative Ted
Loughheed, who said the union
can clam: victory in the dispute
because they were able to win
most of their demands.
Ed Blazo, Kennedy House
ow..tive director, spent his first
day back with regular staff in
meetings but found time to
express his satisfaction that the
labor dispute had finally ended.
"It feels great, fantastic. rm
happy to have the people back
at work."
Paula VanDusen, a guard at
the centre and a member of the
union negotiating team, echoed
Blazo's sentiments. She also
hoped the two sides could learn
to put aside their past

she said. "But were happy to be

A message of hope
for the holidays
More than at any time in recent memory,
this Christmas "'tis the season to be jolly"
— or to at least make the attempt.
it's been a difficult year for most of us.
Check the pages of any newspaper, turn on
any television, talk to the people around
you. for proof of that statement. Gloom
and doom abound and it saturates virtually
every aspect of modern-day Fife.
Companies and industries are shutting
down, people are losing their lobs, taxes
and deficits rise continually. Worst of all
there doesn't appear to be any relief in
sight
Peopleseem [earful and guarded as the
prospect of personal disaster seems to
creep closer and closer towards them.
Understandably there's a tendency to tune
out the world — to become cloistered In
our own private lives while dreading that
fateful date when we can't keep reality
outside our doors any longer.
These are frightening and pessimistic
tines.
- it makes it all the more important to dig
down deep for some semblance of personal
reassurance — to believe that better times

is still a wondrous place, to be hopeful,

There's always been something about

And Christmas Eve — the anticipation
would just about drive me crazy waiting for
the dawn of a new day, Christmas Day.
And Santa never forgot me. He would
always forget a few items on my wish IM —
generaly whatever cost more than $30 and 1
usually forgave him for that.
In our house, Mom and Dead wotid go al
out on the siodkings. It would take at least
an hour to sift through the goodies, eating
the edibles along the way. There was
method to my folks' madness, of course,
because the extra hour was for my Dads
benefit, which he wisely used sleeping.
When we finally managed to rouse him,
my two brothers and I would open their
stockings. Then it was breakfast (usually
poached eggs] and finally, the presents -
These are some of my fardest memories.
It is the stuff my dreams are made of.
But rm not a dAd any more. Today the

But its still Christmas and it's still special.
Well make it somehow — with heads up and
Spirits high.
The trick is putting it al in perspective.
You only have to watch the news — hear
reports of starving children to Somalia or
doser to home, the food and toy drives in
Pickering and Ajax.
We have it easy.
I might not have everything I need, but
there are plenty of people around the globe
and right in our backyard who have much
less.
Helping those less fortunate than
ourselves, I think, is the true meaning of
Christmas.
On December 25, rm going to try and
forget my own problems. My wife and I will
be at a soup kiichen in downtown Toronto,
helping serve Christmas dinner to the
horneleess.
Its only a few hours of our time. A few
hours out of a special day. It's not much, but
maybe we can put a smile on the faces of a
few people who could surely use one.
Maybe it will also be enough to get me
back in the Christmas spirit and in the
process put a smile back on my face.
If that's not enough, I only have to pay a
visit to my brother's horse, or at any of my
kirl* +s. Ask one of my younger nieces or
nephews what Christmas means to them.
The smile on their fakes will sturdy fight up

the idea of shipping Toronto

town is pitching the idea to
federal MPs.
Ontario MP Rene Soetens

likes the idea, calling it a '5R

Soetens does, however, admit
that the plan may be a little late,
anyway.
'The Kirkland Lake group is

said. "The (provincial)

already precluded this option but
I think its something they should

Even if Grier were to

predict if the plan would offer
any answers to Pickering's own

"I don't know if this is the

replace the four possible sites
around Whitevale. I only wish
the provincial government would
open its mind to alternatives like
the rail option so that the people

and much, much more.
Rose and Fernanda suggest home

the look you want.
The store also stocks a selection of

The new year will bring plenty of

That means reduced prices and the
