The Weekend Bay News, March 13,14,15,1992 P3 Own new condominium's rent or today's y he chance to move into Your own 2 -bedroom condo in downtown Whitby for what you now pay in rent is one opportunity too good to miss. Royal Gardens suites are scheduled for completion in downtown Whitby by early 1993. But this spring, ownership has been made easier, thanks to a 4.5 per cent mortgage option now being offered by builders, B.G. Schickedanz. Prices for the 124 suites range from $88,990 for the 435 sq. ft. Rose suite, to $160,990 for the 3 - bedroom 1031 sq. ft. Gardenia penthouse. When these low prices are coupled with the mortgage package, ownership can become a reality. One example is the Orchid suite, a mid-range 2 -bedroom with all the features, priced at $128,990. For qualified purchasers, the 4.5 per cent mortgage means $661 a month. Adding taxes and monthly condominium fees, which include utilities, you can move in for $916 a month. Other suites and mortgage packages of 6 per cent over three years are available. The net result is that you can move into a new condominium unit for what you now pay in rent. Several suites include solarium and ensuite bathroom. All suites include five free appliances: stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and stacked washer and dryer. The brightly lighted kitchens include double sinks, custom designed kitchen cupboards and quality vinyl flooring. First floor suites have their own private patios. P4 The Weekend Bay News, March 13,14,15,1992 Counsellor for handicapped faces sentence in April Sentencing of a Pickering man guilty of sexual assault, will take place in April. Rafeeq Ahmed Khan, 55, of Dahlia Drive, assaulted four people while working as a counsellor of developmentally handicapped people. During the trial court was told Khan worked with a Durham Region organization from Sept. 1990, to Jan. 1991. The organization provided support services for the developmentally handicapped. An investigation followed a complaint from a 22 -year-old woman. Khan, known to the people in the group as Raffi, then resigned from his job, said Crown Counsel Lisa Grant. A 32 -year-old man testified Khan raped him in the TV room of a group home after breakfast. Other charges against Khan included intercourse with a 39 -year-old woman and touching the breasts of a 36 -year-old woman. His sentence will take place in the Ontario Court, general division in Whitby, before Mr. Justice John Sheppard. Former Pickering mayor visits twin city Former Pickering Mayor Jack Anderson appeared at Pickering executive committee this week to present greetings from Pickering's twin city in China. Ile recently returned from a 2 -week visit to China in which he spent four days at Heng -Chu, a city of about 30,000 in Taiwan. Heng -Chu was picked as Pickering's twin in 1981. It's former mayor Anderson's second visit to the city, which looks out over the China sea toward the Philippines. He presented a press clipping from his visit in which the Heng -Chu mayor said he looked forward to visiting Pickering in August. Education headquarters site school is problem Durham Board of Education staff and trustees have had ongoing dialogue with the Town of Whitby and the local architectural conservation advisory committee concerning the future of the old Sinclair P.S. The school sits on the Taunton Road site where the new Education Centre and Whitby secondary school will be constructed starting next fall. Some of the alternatives considered are retaining the original section of the building on its present site, relocating it to another area of the same site, incorporating it into the design of the new Education Centre, moving it to another Durham Board school site or moving it to either a private or town - owned site in Whitby. The cost of moving and refurbishing the original section of the building is estimated to be $375,000. This figure would include demolishing the newer parts of the building, preparing a new foundation on another site and installing proper Pickerinff plumbing, electrical and beating systems. After considerable discussion and deliberation, the Durham board decided, in conjunction with requirements of the capital grant plan, to go to public tender to have the Sinclair PS removed from its current site. The tender process will specify the exterior part of the original building must be preserved and refurbished, and Sinclair PS must remain in Whitby Town. If no tenders meeting these requirements are received, the board will direct its architects to incorporate certain historical sections of the building into the new Education Centre scheduled for completion in June 1994. Excess airport lands not necessarily housing Approximately 9,700 acres of land originally targetted for a Pickering airport — that were expected to be sold by the federal government — won't necessarily be dedicated for future housing. During a meeting of Durham Region council March 4, Region Chairman Gary Herrema said the excess federally -owned property won't necessarily be sold for housing. The federal finance minister announced during his budget presentation last month that excess airport lands would be part of a federally -owned assets sale for cash. The government expects to earn approximately $60 million from the sale of north Pickering property identified as excess for a future airport, Herrema said. However, the region chairman was skeptical of the anticipated dollar amount. 'I do not believe they will raise $60 million in the market on that land," he told council. Herrema added he supports the idea of turning the property over to private sector hands. Both the province and local municipalities have the right of first refusal on the property, when it becomes available. Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs told The Bay News last week he doesn't believe his municipality would be interested in purchasing the property. The federal government has yet to announce how much of the 9,700 excess acres will be made available and when it will be sold. Motorcycle ride for sight approved A request from the Red Knights Motorcycle Club for free use of Pickering Rec Centre's parking lot during its annual Ride For Sight charity event has been granted. The annual event has been supported by the town for the last six years. The allocation raised some resistance in Pickering's executive committee this week because it appeared the request would mean an over -expenditure in one budget area. However, the facility will be provided, for free, for the event on June 12 from 7 am to 11 am. Shopping for savings is fashionably in style these days as most people continually search for quality at an affordable price. Florsheim Express Outlet is tailor-made to fit today's tight budgets. "People nowadays are really becoming bargain hunters with the way the economy is," Benincasa said in an interview. "Who wants to spend, say, $100, if they can get something for less?" For the sake of a few minor, almost imperceptible flaws or for a shoe that is considered end -of -line, shoppers can save between 10 and 60 per cent on Florsheim quality shoes at the Whitby outlet. Subtle flaws in these shoes could include such things as an insole that doesn't go all the way to the toe or a minor color variation on the paint used on a shoe sole. "They're just minor little things," Benincasa says. End -of -line footwear means exactly that. These are the shoes no longer carried by Florsheim's retail outlets — many of which may only be styles from a year ago. The Whitby Florsheim clearance store is one of six locations in Ontario and Quebec. It opened in December and features more than 3,500 pairs of men's shoes. "Everything we have is on the shelf," Benincasa said. "What we have is out there. There's nothing in a stockroom anywhere." Styles range from casual to dress shoes and from sizes six to 15 in B to EEE widths. "We're basically a self - serve location but we also give personal service," she said. In addition, Florsheim Express Outlet also carry regular -priced current styles that are featured in Florsheim's other retail stores. While the bargain outlet only sells men's shoes, women's styles will be added sometime in May or June. In addition to regular advertised specials, the Whitby store also features a number of non -advertised deals every week. "We've got specials going on all the time that we don't advertise," Benincasa said. Florsheim shoes are noted for their quality. ";; f it's the lilt of Irish laughter you're looking for, you71 find it all and more at Ajax's Kerry Inn — whether it be the smiling faces, familiar greetings or the drink (alcoholic or non) waiting, already poured, to be claimed by the "regulars". Newcomers love the Kerry Inn. It's the kind of place where you will find "no strangers, only friends you haven't met'. That's the kind of philosophy the Belfast trio believes strongly in. The trio? Why, they're the three brothers who own and operate the Kerry Inn, of course. That's Bill, Colin and Victor McCullough — one outdoing the other in good looks and hospitality. Victor and Bill can be found at any time, manning the bar and socializing with regulars and newcomers alike. Colin, a pastry chef by trade, can be found in the kitchen. There he is no stranger, having worked in 5 -star establishments — Four Seasons Yorkville, Sutton Place and The Bristol Place Hotel to name a few. Standards at the Kerry are very high. The brothers feel no one but the owners themselves can keep these standards. No matter what time of day you drop by the Kerry for a coffee, lunch or a drink, you'll find at least two of the brothers to greet you. Tuxedoed staff greet you at any time. 0 ...presents But don't get the wrong impression. At Kerry Inn the atmosphere is one of friendliness and casual comfort. It's not unusual at lunch hour to find "the girls" or business people alike chatting over homemade soup — or even find a few toddlers in the crowd. Grandparents are there too, as comfortable as the rest. In fact, many regulars have introduced their families to the Kerry. English, Scottish, Irish and Durham born enjoy the comfort of Kerry Inn's traditional Irish breakfast on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm. There's black pudding, peameal bacon, sausage, soda bread, potato bread and eggs. If your style is more Canadian, you will be catered to Canadian — no questions asked. Although the Kerry Inn is themed Irish, its entertainment — like the clientele — varies. Thursday through Sunday will bop you, rock you, lull you, and sometimes all three. Some nights you will simply just want to dance the night away. Kerry Inn is celebrating its third anniversary March 14. Shoppers should listen carefully for the subtle variations in sound when listening to one speaker, then the other. The vdume on both should be adjusted equally or the louder speaker may sound better. "Trust your personal taste," McKeever advises. "You should select the speaker that sounds best to you." Always remember that speakers in the store may sound different in your home. Experiment with the placement of your speakers in the room — and dori t expect a clear vibrant sound if your speaker is hidden behind the sofa! Some general rules of thumb are to position speakers eight to fifteen feet apart and angle them toward the place you will be when listening to your music. Stereo sound quality diminishes if speakers are facing each other directly — so don't set them up kitty corner to each other. So remember, the trick to burying the best speakers for you is to listen carefully and trust your personal judgement. OPEN TO PUBLIC ' old plumbing conservation. Twenty per cent of the electrical energy used in the home goes toward heating water. Wasting hot water is just like flushing dollar bills down the toilet. Fortunately, leading plumbing supply manufacturers, like Moen Inc., are quick to respond to new conservation challenges. With the help of new technology, the result is not only a more ecologically compatible system, but a better shower too. Faucet or tap technology has come a long way in the last decade. The days of worn out rubber compression washers are fading fast. When turning off a faucet that has a washer, it is necessary to push against the water pressure before the water will turn off entirely. All Moen faucets are washerless. The washerless technoiogy uses a pressure -activated seal. When turning off a faucet, water pressze actuai!y works with you 'o sea: Cff the flow. Beca;:se -here s :ess .,f a st-..gg.e zyz.-s- Moen's faucets and shower heads are fully equipped with water flow restrictors in order to meet conservation requirements. Regardless of the water pressure, the flow will not exceed 11-1/2 litres per minute. Some older showerheads without the water flow restrictor can spew out over 40 litres of water per minute! That is an i,rmecessary waste of water that can be stopped with the simple installation of a Moen showerhead. Moen's energy and water efficient showerheads are a great exam, ple of less is better. Everyone knows what happens when someone flushes the toilet while you are :r the shower Yeow!! It's ca;led 'shoker shock". A product most consumers seem to be unaware of is the pressure balancing shower valve. A pressure balancing valve from Moen effectively prevents "shower shock". It is a mechanism which is sensitive to incoming water pressure. If, for example, you are in the shower and there is a change in the hot water pressure (someone starts the clothes washer) the pressure balancing valve will sense the difference in the hot water flow, and will adjust the cold water pressure accordingly, so the same water temperature is maintained. With a Moen press::re baiancir.g valve, you _a:. sc.. ay goo"s: ower Water and energy conservation gains haven't meant compromises in the fashion department. Moen faucets are available in a wide variety of shapes and finishes to suit all interior decor and budget requirements. Styles range from the traditional two handle type to the very avant garde single handled Wave faucet. So don't take your faucet or showerhead for granted. That would be an apt observation describing the Chesterfield Factory. The frontage does not give the impression of great size. But the truth is there's 10,000 square feet of space at 1650 Bayly Street in Pickering, dedicated to creating furniture in the old-fashioned tradition. There are several sides to this fami1v business, run by Lee and Willie Nowenski. Recently introduced classes in sponge painting and marbleizing, conducted L decorator Corinne Scholey, have been well attended. But the heart of the business is still that of manufacturing furniture to fit customers needs. "We can make modular pieces," says Willie Nowenski, 'that fit into unusual areas — hard to get into places.' All of the work is done to exacting standards. Frames must be hardwood — kiln dried ash or elm. Joints are glued and dowelled. There must be no metal or wood visible through the padded upholstery. The IYowneky Family at eke Che"tarfeW F4 (seated) W&w and Lae, rich children To The fabric has to be smooth, with matched patterns and lined skirts. "We are in the business of making real furniture, the way it used to be made, using the finest of materials," says Kerri, who looks after advertising, among other duties. She and brother Todd complete the family team which has been serving Pickering in this location for 12 years. Todd, a business degree graduate from Western University. has developed Ieeory on Bayly Serest in P".ri w inc&de" id and Kerri in the farnitnre nkowroonu. the computer accounting and inventory system. This is especially important in keeping track of the huge selection of fabrics which come from five Canadian suppliers. Even remnants serve a useful purpose. Antique lovers can often find just the right piece to refurbish their latest prize. The Chesterfield Factory will also do any necessary touch-up. With today's accent on recycling, re- upholstering plays a big part in the operation. For the customer this often means other home decorating changes. Alleviating the agony that often goes with decorating changes, the business offers a free mini -decorating consultation to people registering for sponge painting or marbleizing. Many people are excited with the results of sitting down with an expert to tie together paint chips, upholstery fabrics and drape material. "Putting things together is really what we're about," says Kcrri. "We want to make sure someone's dream becomes a reality." The extensive showroom with numerous room settings is also a help in this regard. A solid reputation built up over the years has made dreams become reality for numerous customers. Many of them have been referred by friends. Along with many local customers they hail from Toronto, Port Perry and Lindsay. Through the years the company has provided furnishings for office lobbies, restaurants, gym and country clubs. The Nowenski family takes great pride in everything they do. They provide outstanding quality with faster delivery than most other manufacturers. 7 - is a PREMIUM PUBLIC GOLF COURSE No Tournaments Gwen Sheridan, Manager Phone 427-7737 Fax 427-1611 27 Buaey L w, R.R.L.
