Ajax and Whitby host
economic public forums
Canada's ability to compete and
maintain a high standard of living will
be the subject of a local meeting Feb.
27 to be hosted by the Canadian
government, Durham public schools
and the Ajax -Pickering Board of
Trade.
The meeting is part of a series
organized by the federal government's
"Prosperity" secretariat examining root
causes of Canada's declining
competitiveness and economy.
Headed by Michael Wilson, the
secretariat hopes to involve the public
in discussing issues such as declining
competitiveness, corporate
restructuring and training. These
issues have been the subject of a 5 -
week series of articles in The Bay
News.
The first consultation meeting was
held at Durham College earlier this
month. Only 25 people attended —
many of them organizers.
Organizers hope for better
attendance at a second meeting in
Whitby this week and on Feb. 27 at
6:30 p.m. at Pickering High School.
High School student council
representatives are being invited to the
Whitby and Ajax meetings.
Durham's "top cop"
retires
Durham Region's police chief
announced last week he will retire this
summer after 31 years on the job.
Chief David Edwards told the Police
Services Board during a meeting Feb.
14 that he intends to retire in August.
Edwards joined the Oshawa Police
Department as a cadet in 1961 and was
named the region's police chief in 1988.
He is a former president of the
Ontario Association of Chiefs and
currently serves as vice-president of
the Canadian Association of Chiefs of
Police. Edwards also serves as a
Canadian representative to the
executive body of the International
Association of Chiefs of Police.
Ajax Mayor Jim Witty, the region's
police service board chairman, said
the timing of Edwards' retirement
came with the department in good
shape.
"He just wants to enjoy himself and
his family for a little while," Witty said
in an interview. The board will name a
successor prior to Edwards'
retirement.

Modified year pilot
project considered for
Pickering schools
Highbush Public School in Pickering
is one of six Durham schools being
considered for a pilot program into a
modified school year.
Public board trustees consider the
modified school year as a way to cut
costs and meet schooling needs. They
confirmed Dec. 10 that six schools have
been selected to have the plan presented
to them.
Introducing the project would require
a two-thirds vote from parents and staff
after a series of meetings to familiarize
all concerned with the details of the
project.
Durham board began a search in
September with a list of 21 schools to
consider the program. Other schools
that have opted to go on to the next stage
of consultation include West l.vnde,
Coronation, R.A. Hutchinson,
Athabasca and Grove Public Schools. +
The board hopes two will end up
undertaking the pilot project.
A report accompanying the Board's
decision states llighbush parents want to
be actively involved in discussion about
anticipated growth in their area and
problems to he faced.
Staff and parents are concerned about
availability of support staff, school
spirit and cohesiveness, and the effects
of the plan on family vacations.

Different forms of the modified school
year allow features like three months of
learning with one month of holidays,
long winter vacations and better use of
school space.
Highbush principal B.E. Hedley said
letters are being sent to parents
describing the consultation process. He
and his staff look forward to learning
more.
Pickering pian dies in
auto accident
A Pickering man died of head injuries
he received after being thrown from his
car during an accident in Oshawa last
week.
According to a Durham Region Police
report, Steven Johnston, 22, of
Dellbrook Drive in Pickering was
pronounced dead at Oshawa General
Hospital.
,Johnston had been driving; his 1990
Jeep north on Wentworth Street at
Nelson Street when an eastbound vehicle
collided with it in the intersection at
approximately 10:30 a.m.
A stop sign is posted at the location.
Police say the driver of the other vehicle
escaped without serious injury and no
charges have been laid.

The proposal was put forward during
Pickering budget talks this week.
Executive committee approved an
additional $12,000 to make the
transition possible.
The money will provide staff for a
smaller library and reduced hours. The
library board plan to meet with area
residents to discuss the use of volunteers
and other community initiatives to
enhance the program.
Pickering councillors
overturn pay increase
decision
During a private "in camera" meeting
this week, Pickering councillors took
back a motion passed last week which
cut 8750 from each of their salaries.
In the original series of budget talks.
councillors had provided a hud„et
sufficient to allow for a.-) per cent salary
increase: to all staff — themselves, union
staff and non-union staff. Specific: by-
laws nerd to be passed in each caw:.
But during last week's presentation of
budget to executive committee,
Councillor Kip Van Kempen proposed !,
pay increases to councillors be cut to
zero per cent and limited to 3 per cent
for non-union staff.
In last week's public meeting, the
motions passed. But the budget didn't
pass. So the budget — and the salary
motions with it — went back to the
drawing board.
The two motions were raised again at
Monday's public budget meeting, but
were deferred to an "in camera”
meeting.
During the private meeting, according
to councillor Van Kempen, the
councillor motion did not pass.
Councillors defeated the zero per cent
increase for themselves, returning to 3
per cent.
The motion limiting non-union staff to
a 3 per cent increase did pass, he said.

that of Ken Shaw.
Of course, being anchor on
television's CFTO Night Beat News
helps. But even if he weren't a
regular on TV, he'd still be easy to
spot working at many charitable
functions and fundraising events in
the community. Enjoying every
minute.
Originally from Ottawa, Ken
came to Toronto in 1972.
"I didn't know what I wanted to
do," he says.
"I was going to Carlton University,
taking an arts course and bored. I
had five professors — two were live
and three were on videotape." He
left school after the first year.
His passion for journalism drew
him to the television industry and a
job as technician trainee at CFTO.
Eight months later, having realized
he wanted to write comedy, Ken
applied for, and was accepted as a
writer on a show called Half The
George Kirby Comedy Hour.
But his hopes were soon dashed
when the show was cancelled.
However, buoyed with self-
confidence while at home in Ottawa
on vacation, he teamed up with a
friend and together they devised a
show which eventually aired on
fledging Global television network.
Shh, It's The News hit Canadian
airwaves as an instant success. A
take -off on newscasts, the weekly
show lasted for a couple of years
until budget problems forced it off
the air. But Ken won't forget the
first show.
"The very first scene was
Catherine McKinnon and me," he
says, grinning.
"My wife Andrea and I were
engaged at the time and some
friends who were entertaining her at
a surprise party that night wanted
to let her watch the show. So they
turned on the TV and there I was
with another woman — in bed."
By 1976, Ken was writing and
producing "promos" for the
Canadian Television Network
(CTV) and enjoying life in Los
Angeles. But not everything went
well there. A comic strip which he
and an artist friend had sold
successfully to the L.A. Times
Syndicate resulted in cancellation
following disputes with the editor.
Wanting to write for television
and movies and having received two
tenuous offers, Ken found himself
shut out by the writers guild
"Night Beat"
James Yorke
Ken Shaw
because he was not an American.
He came home to Canada and
morning radio in Brampton. Then
in 1979, he returned to CFTO as a
reporter. Two years later Ken Shaw
became news anchor. Although he
has since received more lucrative
offers in the United States, he is
happy to stay right here.
"In Canada, there are not that
many jobs so anchors do not move
around," he says.
"In the States, they change
anchors as often as you change your
socks and once you go, you can't
just come back."
Ajax and Pickering residents for
the past 12 or 13 years, Ken, wife
Andrea and their children Ryan
(13), Christopher (11) and Valerie
(3) find life in Ajax suits them to a
"T", Ken says.
"For me, it's the ideal lifestyle."
His presence before the cameras
each night from 11:30 p.m. to
midnight, conceals the fact that in
truth, Ken is still primarily a
writer.
Before writing each show, long
hours are spent listening to hourly
newscasts, reading all three Toronto
daily papers, watching for stories
coming over the wires, spending
hours on the telephone, searching
for news items that may have been
missed by others.
"I have a great team of people,"
he says. "We really are a family.
That's why the show is
overwhelmingly number one in the
ratings."
As part of television's longest -
running anchor team, Ken enjoys
working with other professionals
who "have no stars in their eyes." A
happy, enthusiastic man, Ken Shaw
clearly enjoys his life and his work.
"You go in there each night and
you do your best," he says, smiling,
"and hopefully, you come home to a
normal life."

Bio -Strath helps body resist
ay and night the human body
must combat all kinds of
pathogenic organisms. Good
defence is a matter of physical
resistance. If the body has adequate
defence mechanisms in winter, it will not
be afflicted with influenza, catarrh,
coughs, etc.
Active resistance is synonvmous with
good health. In a health; body a complex
defence system functions totallv and

hectic living, stress, etc., all present a
threat to people nowadays. An imbalance
can arise through undereating or
overeating, as well as through incorrert or
deficient diet, or mental stress. The
bodv's defences are weakened.
tho knows whether our diet is
complete or not? A difficult problem for
anyone to solve.
Bio -Strath consists of 100 per cent
pure, naturally occurring substances
which are in a biologically balanced state.
The yeast cell contains protein,
carbohydrates, fat, and is at the same
time very rich in vitamins, enzymes,
amino acids, minerals, trace elements,
and also RNA/DNA and ATP.
A yeast cell requires oxygen for its
ALFA
development, the same as a human being.
Should any single active substance be
absent from the cell, it would no longer be
able to multiply (cell division). The herbs
on the other hand are rich in substances
which have specific effects on the physical
organs functions.
'%-hen Bio -Strath is taken, the bodv is
supplied with numerous vital substances.
It compensates for any possible dietary
deficiency. Overdose is impossible. Due
to the high nutritional value of the
preparation, the body's own resistance is
strengthened and mobilized.
Bio -Strath is available at Alfa Nutrition
in Pickering and Markham.
Over the past 25 years Bio -Strath AG
has commissioned research by scientists
at home and abroad into the various
positive effects of Bio -Strath (clinical and
pharmacological tests). The most
significant results of this research were:
R'hen threatened, the human bodv
reacts defensively, with general and
specific types of remedial reaction;
healing of wounds, fever, sweating,
production of white blood cells and
antibodies, excretion, detoxication, etc.
The nature of assimilation in the bowel is
also of vital importance for good health.
Countless individual reactions make up
the total defence mechanism. Nature will
only allow resistant organisms to survive.

here's no substitute for
experience when it comes to
making the most important
investment of your life, says
Saverio Montemarano of Melody
Homes.
The longtime builder with the
musical name has been a growing
concern for more than 25 years —
building some of the finest quality
homes anywhere. Saverio
Montemarano says those in the
market for a newly -constructed
house should always consider the
background and experience of the
home builder.
"We are fully experienced in the
building industry," he said in an
interview. 'I don't think people
should let those who are relatively
new to this business build the most
important investment of their lives."
One of Melody Homes' most recent
projects — Liberty Village in
Bowmanville — is a perfect example
of how years of experience seem to
have taught this developer how to
build quality homes. And at a price
that's truly affordable.
This 750 -home community nestled

This community offers 37 attractive

three "semis" and seven townhouse
styles. In addition, a select "Multi

tailor their homes to suit their
lifestyle.
This option lets you to choose such
things as the number of bedrooms
you desire and the location and style
of floorplan — among other things.
It allows buyers to pick a design and
floor plan for 14 models of homes.
Montemarano said.
It's a "hands-on" principle that
Melody Homes has become famous
for. In keeping with a commitment to
affordability, prices in Liberty Village
start as low as $99,900 and even the
largest home on a 40 -ft. lot — the
3,005 sq. ft. Rose — starts at only
$209,990. The price includes GST!

Moe Bandy — a country music mainstay
is been a long and hard trail
>> for country and western
great Moe Bandy.
The Texas -born singing
troubadour whose career has spanned
three decades, makes his way to Ajax's
Country Gold on Feb. 27, 28 and 29.
Like many of his peers in the country
and western musical business, Bandy's
rise to success wasn't an easy climb.
Before realizing the full potential of
his crooning talents, Bandy was a
competition bare back bronco and bull
rider until repeated injuries finally
took their toll and led to his retirement.
However, the life experience was to
play a significant influence in his
musical career. After years of
performing as a part-time musician,
Bandy pawned his family furniture to
finance a recording session that led to a
contract with Columbia Records.
His first hit — I Just Started Hatin'
Cheatin' Songs Today — became the
catalyst that propelled Bandy into the
mainstream of country music
traditionalists.
Songs like It's A Cheating Situation,
Hank Williams You Wrote My Life, and
Bandy The Rodeo Clown followed and
solidified his reputation. During the
19803, Bandy frequently teamed up
with songwriter Joe Stampley for what
was to be a string of hits that included
Just Good Old Boys, Holdin' The Bag,
and the infamous — Where's The
Dress.
Towards the end of the 19809, Band,
released the prophetically titled album
You Haven't Heard The Last Of Me.
Hits like Till I'm Too Old To I)ie Nounly_
Moe Bandy
You Haven't Heard The Last Of Me,
and Americana propelled him back into
the Top Ten country charts.
Bandy has been a frequent recipient
of numerous country music awards and
a strong supporter of Children's
Transplant Association — through an
annual golf tournament fund-raiser in
San Antonio, Texas.

New video technology lets you
try on colored contact lenses
without actually trying them on.
You've probably heard
about — or even visited —
hairdressers who can show
you exactly what different
hairstyles would look like
through the use of a video
camera hooked up to a
computer.
Now, that same
technology allows you to
see what you would look
like with, say, violet -colored
eyes or with 14 other colors
of contact lenses.
But here's the best part
– you don't have to try on
15 pair of contact lenses to
find out which color would
look best on you.
The process is quick,
easy, fun and absolutely
free and without obligation.
During the bridal show,
Her Eyes Only will make
this new video technology
.available to anyone and
everyone who's interested
in seeing what hazel eyes,
for example, would really
look like.
Her Eyes Only (see the
ad below) specializes in
fashion eyewear for women
at their Kingston Road
store.
But during the bridal
show you'll get a taste of
Her Eyes Only and this new
technology right there on
the spot.

Two Hearts Flowers and Gifts help wedding plans blossom
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
or nearly two years,
Donna Narraway
and Nancy
Legassicke have enjoyed a
blossoming friendship at
Two Hearts Flowers and
Gifts in Pickering.
During that short time,
the pair have also been a
growing concern in the
wedding . flower
arrangement business,
serving numerous weddings.
"People come into our
shop and they like our
style," said Donna
Narraway. "We are not a
traditional florist. We cater
to the lifestyles of our
customers and offer
personal service and new
designs."
"Our designs are unique
because they are very
natural looking — not stiff,"
she added. "When people
need wedding flowers they
come back to see us."
What a customer wants
and can afford is what's
most important to both
women. Many customers
look for simplicity and don't
necessarily want to spend
too much money from their
wedding budgets on flowers,
Narraway said.
Over the store's brief
history, many letters of
gratitude have been
received from customers
who have appreciated the
efforts of Donna and
Nancy.
In addition to floral
arrangements, Two Hearts
Flowers and Gifts aLo carry
a great selection of unique
gift ideas for a wedding or
bridal shower.
Some of the more popular
choices include pottery, art
prints and dried flowers
arrangements.
Both welcome the
opportunity to help people
make their wedding floral
plans. Customers are
encouraged to drop in for a
visit or call 420-7544.

Spacious visitor parking, spotless apartment building
`"'_ neighborhood is only as
pleasant as the people who
live there. A lot of
friendly and pleasant
people live in Top of Westnev in
Ajax, according to building
superintendent Darlene Grimmer.
"They're really nice people," says
Grimmer. She has spent more than
a year helping to manage the 156 -
suite, 14-storev building. She
speaks in glowing terms about her
tenants.
'We have a good mix of
professionals and others with
families.'
Top of Westney, like any good
neighborhood, is conveniently
located with close proximity to
schools, churches, shopping and
public transportation. There's
even a mailbox service in the actual
building itself.
Among the many features of Top
of Westnev is a fenced -in play area
for children.
"It's a safe area where children
can go and play — preferably
under adult supervision,' Grimmer
said.
During July and August, a heated

are open to building residents. Top

"Many of them have unusual

Each suite features five

are available — although Grimmer
admits it is tough to find a 1 -

"Most of the suites available are

"Our numbers are reducing rapidly.

The building is managed by

Grimmer calls them.
