40,000 sq. ft. office
proposed for Htcy. 2
A 40,000 sq. ft. professional office
building proposed for Highway 2 east of
Marwood Avenue has cleared an
important political hurdle.
During a public meeting Monday
night, Ajax committee of the whole
approved a set of Official Plan,
development plan and zoning bylaw
amendments for the 2 -storey proposed
Office.
The proposed development is located
on a 2 -acre property on the south side of
llighway 2. It will eventually comprise
70 per cent for professional offices and a
bank and 30 per cent for retail
components.
Harmon Drive resident Terry Breen
applauded the plan and suggested other
development along Highway 2 should
follow the lead of the office proposal.
"1'm very, very happy with the Ajax
Professional Group (developers),"
Breen told committee. "I'm happy with
it. The neighbors are happy with it."
Project architect Lloyd Hilgers said
the owners of the property hope to build
a high-quality, modern and
contemporary building. Approximately
$800,000 worth of landscaping and
other enhancements over and above
what would normally be provided in a
"strip mall"project are being
considered, he said.
Building owner Jay Bacher said
several doctors, dentists, laboratories,
banks, pharmacies and other
prospective professional tenants have
been approached.
"Yes, there is a lot of interest coming
in from all of these parties." Bacher
said.
Town staff and developer architects
are still studying design proposals. The
Ajax Professional Group hopes to
convince the town to reduce its demand
for landscaping and other land
dedication.
Committee members applauded the
developer's proposal.
"This is the kind of building I think
everyone on council wants on Highway
2." said Regional Councillor Roger
Anderson.
"1 think it sets the example for the rest
of developers who I know are going to be
inundating us in the next few years."
For as little as 23C,
this remarkable device
can save 1,983 gallons of
hot water a year.
You'd be amazed how small changes, like replacing the washer
on a leaky tap can make such a big difference in you home's
energy efficiency. Little things, like using dimmer switches with
incandescent lightbulbs or insulating your hot water pipes all add
up. So, why not take a look around your home and see where
there's room for small changes?

Living with Cancer
children's support group
Cancer affects one in three Canadians. For
those living with cancer, it can be a very
difficult and isolating time. Over the past year
the South Durham unit has held Living with
Cancer emotional support group meetings on
the 2nd and last Monday evenings of the month
from 7 to 9 p.m.
With space donated by the Cricket club, the
meetings are held at the club house on the
northeast corner of .Monarch and Clements
Avenue in Ajax. These information drop-in
meetings have been very helpful and
comforting for patients, friends and family
members who can share their concerns,
successes and get practical and emotional
support from each other.
The South Durham Unit is now offering a
Living with Cancer support group for children
with cancer or children who are concerned
about family members with cancer. The
meetings for children and youths between the
ages of 5 and 17 will coincide with the adult
group in an adjoining room on the last Monday
evening of the month beginning Feb. 24.
Donations of puppets, craft materials, juice,
cookies and cups would be greatly appreciated.
The society is also initiating a Cansurmount
program where trained volunteers who have
been diagnosed with cancer at least one year
ago. have had treatment and feel well now (or
have had a close relationship with a cancer
patient) are matched up with new cancer
patients to provide one-on-one emotional
support. Training and screening for
volunteers are provided by the Canadian
Cancer Society. For more information call
Lynn, during business hours at 686-1516.
Police raid marijuana lab
in Pickering industrial mall
Durham Region Police drug unit officers
discovered more than 2,500 marijuana plants
— some over 6 ft. tall — growing in an
industrial plaza in Pickering on Monday.
Two men were arrested after police searched
a hydroponic lab on Dillingham Road and
found growing marijuana plants. Fifty bags
containing approximately 4 lbs. of marijuana
with a street value of more than $2,000 per
pound, were also found.
Acting on a tip, drug officers arrested
William Marquis, 33, after police checked a
vehicle in a parking lot on Dillingham Road.
The man was reportedly found with two
pounds of marijuana.
Shortly afterward officers raided the
warehouse hydroponic lab.
.Marquis of Richmond Hill and Patrick
Darcey, 63, of Don Mills are charged with
cultivation of marijuana and possession for the
purpose of trafficking. Both will appear in
Oshawa court Feb. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
0% budget increase for
regional administration
Durham Region's administrative staff have
been instructed to prepare a 1992 budget with
no increase from last year's allotment.
During an interview after a council meeting
Feb. 5, Regional Chairman Gary Herrema said
town staff were instructed to prepare a "0 per
cent" increase budget by the region's special
Pick,
economic committee.
"Our budget will be a 0 per cent increase,"
Herrema said. "Staff have been told, 'What do
we have to do to get to zero?'"
The budgets for Durham Region Police and
the municipality's share of general welfare are
not included in the mandate, the chairman
quickly added.
Ilerrema refused to speculate which
administrative departments would be most
impacted by the committee's directive. "Let's
face it, it's going to affect our personnel," he
said.
Last month when initial estimates projected
an approximate 29 per cent region budget
increase, Herrema vowed to pare down the
figure to one -digit.
He estimated welfare would likely increase
by approximately 7 per cent while the region's
police budget will rise by only 2 per cent.

PACT will recognize the environmental
achievements of high school students with an
award in honor of former Pickering
Councillor Rev Morvan who died last year.
The announcement was made during
PACT's annual meetine in Ajax last week.
The Rev Morgan Environmental Award will
recognize a student or local school which best
exemplifies an achievement of environmental
concern.
PACT chairman L.lovd Thomas says details
of the award are still being finalized. A formal
announcement outlining specific details will be
made in early )larch.

"Right now it's sort of in the preliminary
stage," Thomas said, explaining PACT has yet
to determine whether to honor an individual
or school. "We're not sure which way to go."
Details are still being worked out with the
Durham public school board, the PACT
chairman said. The award could be tied to the
Durham Board of Education science fair —
based on an environmental project.
Thomas said it will be a cash award.
However, an amount has yet to be determined.
Bev Morgan died of a brain tumor early last
year. She was a founding member of PACT in
1987 and served as a Pickering council
representative on the environmental group's
executive board.
Thomas said PACT member suggested the
idea of honoring Morgan at an earlier meeting.
"We want to keep her memory alive. She
was a very strong environmentalist and a real
asset to Pickering."

completely renovated. New paint and
gleaming hardwood floors bring out the best
in each suite.
There are 880 suites, from bachelor to
three bedrooms. Each suite features its own
private balcony.
The large windows in each livingroom are
typical of the spacious and airy feel in the
buildings.

area. Many suites have separate and
spacious dining rooms.

Closets are extra large, with lots of storage
space.
There are storage lockers and fully
equipped laundry rooms for each building.

Claremont artist really enjoys the life
by Marjorie Green
::::,':Artist Jane Buckles leads
the kind of life many
would envy. From the
door of her Claremont -
area home, she can ski or hike for
miles through some of Southern
Ontario's most beautiful ski
countrv.
Surrounded by wildlife of every
kind, she relaxes in the easv
solitude which feeds imagination.
It's the true artist's life.
Not many artists specialize in
papier-mache. But for the past 1-3
years Jane has considered it her
medium of choice: the ideal way to i

creatures come to life.
Widely known for her "people": I
usually eccentric, gossipy -looking
old maids and portly bespectacled
gentlemen just under 5 feet high,
Jane also loves to create strange
animals. tier home reflects her
sense of humor.
Two life-sized white chickens ,
crane their necks to peer through '
an empty window at anyone who
passes down their hall. A silly
spotted dog, with a stick in his
mouth, sands waiting to play
beside a large window in the living
room.
Art is everywhere throughout the
bright, sprawling home. Much of it
bears Jane's own unmistakable
touch.
Married for 27 years to Brian
Buckles, a vice-president of a
major Canadian insurance
company, she's mother of Kelly
and Scan, both now studying at
Queen's University. Jane has
worked steadily as an artist since
graduating in Fine Arts from the
University of Toronto.
Being blessed with a mother who
was also an artist, she was
continually experimenting as a
child. "1 always liked fooling
around in different arts." she says.
"and I still enjoy all kinds of things
— knitting, sewing and drawing."
For five or six years. Jane taught
art in high schools before finally
establishing her business.
"When I first started making my
living at it, I was doing portraits of
people's houses, doing rrccting
cards, and sometimes business
cards," she says. "Then 1 did some
shows. Mostly, 1 guess it was old
houses and rural scenes."

Jane's interest in weaving,

soft sculpture. For awhile, she
enjoyed stitching wall hangings and
other works of art.
Woodwork too, even twig art,
was experimented with and put

to be the most fun.
"It has become quite steady work
for a few vears now," she says
smiling. "Not many people arc
working in papier-mache. I may

Skycraft enters the leisure market after 16 years
hat gives the savvy Durham
Region businessman a
competitive edge when he
travels to Montreal on
business? The unique service offered
by Skycraft. Durham's home town
airline. Local businessmen in the
know have long taken advantage of
Skyeraft's frequent service and low
fares from Oshawa Municipal Airport
to save time, money and stress. They
spend less time travelling to the
airport, in the terminal and in the air.
Now, after 16 years, Skvcraft is
offering the same level of service to
leisure travellers too.
Skvcraft is a scheduled airline
serving Montreal, Ottawa, Windsor
and Detroit. The airline draws
passengers from Toronto east to
Trenton and as far north as
Peterborough.
'Our dedication and level of service
has been enjoyed by over 200,000
passengers," says Carol Graham,
Skyeraft's'Manager, Passenger Sales
and Marketing. 'Escape from the
stress of the 401 and Pearson and then
park for free at our facilities located
adjacent to our terminal. Check-in
time is only 30 minutes prior to
departure. There are no hassles and
you will receive personal service that I
the major airports do not offer. We
have a comfortable passenger lounge
with a coffee shop and complimentary
newspaper. Baggage claims and
customs clearance are fast and simple.'
Tilden car rental, limousine or taxi
service is also available," she said.
Graham believes that the untapped
holiday travel market offers major
growth potential. "We are introducing:
fares that make flying from Oshawa
competitive with the train," she said.
Skvcraft now offers Weekend
Excursion Fares to anv destination for
just $139 return. These fares are
available for Friday departures and
Sunday returns. There are no
advance booking requirements except
for travel to Detroit. The carrier has
also introduced senior and vouth fares
to all cities for $9; one way with no
restrictions.
Skvcraft not oniv offers the lowest
business and leisure fares but also is
exempt from the National
Transportation Tax, which can add as
much as $40 to the price of a ticket on
another airline.
According to Graham, availability is
limited. She strongly urges anyone
planning to travel at these fares to
make their reservations early.
For more information you can call
your travel agent or Skvcraft direct at

Onion Restaurant best -Dept Durham secret
ost people associate the
Purple Onion in Oshawa
with some of the best live
musical entertainment
anywhere.
Greats from blues legend
Johnny Winter to contemporary
Canadian rock artist Tom
Cochrane have performed "where
the music world comes to play".
But the restaurant portion of the
Purple Onion may be one of
Durham Region's best kept
secrets.
Since the current version of the
eatery opened approximately
eight months ago, managers
Thomas Egan and Dave
Quarrington have striven to
realize a vision.
"What Dave and I tried to do
was build a place we thought we'd
look for in a restaurant," Egan
said in an interview.
It's a relaxed casual place that's
been described as a cross between
a college pub and a frontier
saloon. The lunchtime crowd is
often a mix of 3 -piece suit
professionals and casually -clad
blue collar workers.
Italian Cuisine
"It's the type of place where you
can come dressed in a jacket and
tie, or jeans and a t -shirt, and not
feel out of place," Fagan said. "It's
a very relaxed atmosphere."
Like the restaurant itself, the
menu is simple, vet appealing. All
of the food, except desserts. is
homemade, Egan said. One of the
most popular favorites is a
sampler basket. It consists of
three choices from a list that
includes chicken fingers. wings.

additional 50 cents you can top it
off with cheese or bacon.
Egan and Quarrington are
continually "brainstorming" ideas
for special events or evening
entertainment. Eagan admits some
have been extremely successful.
while others have not.
A music movie night featuring
concert films shown on four
television screens received less
than enthusiastic support.
"It didn't all that

surprised."
.However, Stormy Monday Night
Blues featuring house band Full
Count Blues has been extremelv
popular. Every Monday nighty,
patrons are invited to grab their
guitars and harmonicas to sing the
blues live on stage.
"Both Dave and I are big blues
fans," Egan said, explaining how
the idea came about. "We try to
emphasize it's a 'jam'."
"It's progressively gotten better.
We're getting a good turnout and
some are really good musicians."
Tuesday nights feature a pool
tournament. On Fridav and
Saturday nights restaurant
patrons can hear Purple Onion
club name acts through a piped -in
sound system.
And while others are waiting in
line, restaurant patrons get a
head start on concert seating in
the club. They gain entry 15
minutes before doors open.
In the future, Egan says he
hopes to build a permanent stage
to feature local music and
comedy. "We're big supporters of
local talent. I think it's important
to provide an opportunity."
All of which will certainly go a

The physical work to redesign the

The 1,100 -scat club itself offers

was left breathless and chanting for
an encore. The band was more than
happy to oblige.
Another performance of note was
a release from Solomon's latest
recording After You've Gone — a Cy
Coleman original called Stay With
Mc. You could almost imagine
hearing_ lyrics speaking from his
violin.
It was definitely a night to
remember.

..,..:Em(!rald Point is a bustling
hub of activity to a casual
visitor looking around to
learn something about
this luxurious 215 -unit
condominium in Pickering.
The place is literally being
polished by cleaners vacuuming
carpets and wiping windows in the
lobby areas and hallways of one
building. Workmen are repairing
ceiling tiles and fixing up the
swimming pool in another area.
It's an impressive sight,
considering the immaculate outside
and inside appearance of both
Emerald Point buildings. It's all in
no small way due to the efforts of
rental agent Bev Harper and
husband Bay who oversees the
entire process.
"Mv husband is a bit of a task
master," Bev Harper candidly
admits. "What he tries to do here
among the staff is instill a sense of
pride in their building."
Clearly his efforts arc
succeeding. Emerald Point,
located just seconds from Highway
,101, is an attractive and
recognizable sight as you exit the
freeway onto Brock Road.
The condominium is managed by
Ilighmark Property iManagemcnt.
The property's first phase was
compleled in .January 1990. A
second phase opened October
1990.
Not only is Emerald Point a nice
place to visit, its uniquely designed
luxurious suites also make it a
great place to live. Each suite
features five appliances - -
including a washer, dryer, range,
dishwasher and frost -free
refrigerator.
Individually -controlled heating,
and air-conditioning, wall-to-wall
broadloom and beautiful bright
solariums in every suite are also
standard features.
Condominium fees include
heating, hot water and air
conditioning costs. Emerald Point
offers a range of lifestyle amenities
including an indoor pool,
whirlpool, sauna, squash court,
part room, fully -equipped workout
gymnasium and even guest suites.
The location — seconds from
Highway 401 at Brock Road —
provides easy access to the most
major artery into Metro Toronto.
In addition, the Pickering Town
Centre and main central library
are just a minute's drive away.
The kind of people who live at
Emerald Point include many
retired sc;niors (about 50 per cent
of the tenants) and young working
couples.
"I'd say we have about 20 per
cent (of the building's tenants) as
members of the police forces —
between Metro and Durham
Region," Bev Ilarpe;r said.
Another unique feature of
Emerald Point is an underground
parking garage that is among the
most illuminated anywhere. The
area is patrolled by security guards
and their guard dogs from 10 p.m.
to fi a.m.
While 80 per cent of Emerald
Point is occupied, there are a few
small one -bedroom and one -
bedroom -with -dens left. \ew
tenants get one month free; rent
(which must be used in the first 12
months of occupancy).
A recent event showed the kind
of place Emerald Point really is. A
"pot luck" Christmas party
attracted more than 135 tenants
who had the rare opportunity of
meeting their neighbors.
"it went over very, very well,"
Ilarper recalled. "'The property
management couldn't believe things
went as well as they did."
