Dvnix will be providing a system to replace the existing Geac system. The purchase price of the new Dynix system is $291,264. The Dynix evstem will cost, for the next five years, a total of $408,xII. The cost includes the purchase price and all operating costs. The Geac system, over the same period, will cost a total of $"81,601. Over the projected i -year period the Dynix system will cost $.3"3,06" 1147.7—,c i leas than the existing Geac system. The new Dynix system will cost less to maintain and operate. as well as offer patrons a number of new features designed to help the public locate and use the library materials. Foremost among tl.ese new features will be an Online Public Access Catalogue, known as OPAC. Public Access meant that instead of using the card catalogue. patrons will use a computer terminal to find materials. They will be able to find materials not only by the traditional subject, author and title entries, but also by series and contents. Patrons will also be able to perform 'keyword' searches, when they only kn; w a few words of a title. Since OPAC is an integral part of the system, patrons will be able to determine the status of all materials on the system. It will indicate if the item is checked in or out. if its checked out, it will show the due date. New materials being processed by library staff will also be displayed. Patrons will he able to review their circulation records using OPAL. They will be able to see what holds they have placed, what materials have been checked out, and what fines they may have accrued on overdue items. Patrons will also he able to place holds on items themselves. Once they have found an item they want to have that is checked out, they may place a hold on that item. Patrons will then be notified when the material is available for their use. Other useful features will also be available when the new system is in place. The circulation process will be improved with new fixed laser scanners to read barcodes. These new scanners will reduce the need for staff to move materials, and will provide faster and more efficient checkouts. The Dynix system will operate on an IBM R56000 model 32011 computer. The choice of this computer will allow the library to expand its collection, add more terminals- for patron and staff use. and allow the library to easily integrate other information services in the future. Other features of the improved system will be described in subsequent articles. Dial-up access. improved homebound service and portable barcode readers for remote circulation will all be new services available with the Dynix system. Denis O'Connor students protest teacher strike Approximately 200 students at Denis O'Connor Secondary School in Ajax got a 'dressing down" for failing to dress up on Monday morning. School principal Brian Hughes said the group of students, by ignoring the school's uniform policy, decided to make a statement about recent work -to -rule action by teachers. 'I think it was their way of voicing their displeasure,' Principal Hughes told The Bay News. The students were allowed to go to opening exercises that morning. Afterwards the group was directed to meet in the school's cafeteria. It was an opportunity to air out their concerns, Hughes said. They were then instructed to change into their school uniforms. 'What we did was tell the students they were not permitted to go to class (without wearing their uniform. -l.' the school principal said. 'S`e did nothing different than what we normally do.' The school's normal dress code requires Ftudents to wear their uniforms unless they have a note of permission from a parent. The teachers' current work -to -rule action eliminates virtually all after school activitie . Teachers arrive at school 15 minutes before classes begin each morning. They leave 15 minutes after the last class, Hughes said. Members of the school's student council had not met with the school principal to specifically talk about the work -to -rule issue, Hughes said. Earlier reports stated the students received suspensions for failing to comply with the school's dress code. However, Hughes scoffed at the suggestion. 'We'd never suspend a kid for not wearing a uniform," he said. Ajax municipal housing statement strategy proceeds Ajax Town has moved a step closer to finalizing its municipal housing statement strategy. The planning department presented a report of comments made during a public meeting in October with consultants who are drafting the strategy. The comments were received for information. The next step in the process will be to finalize the municipal housing strategy report in council, sometime in April or May, said Planning Director Peter ToIlefsen. The regulating of accessory apartments remains a key issue of concern for residents, politicians and town staff. 3ollefsen said the provincial government is well aware of concerns by Ajax and many other municipalities in the province which are calling for freer access to means to enforce local bylaws. The final stratc,,v created by the town must ultimately he approved by Durham Region. However, the region won't approve the town's housing strategy before it approves its own, the planning director admitted. Ajax is much further ahead of other municipalities in developing a housing strategy, he added. Blue Box recycling program goes bi-weekly Durham Region residents should expect an important piece of mail in the next two weeks. The region's works department is delivering to every household that receives curbside garbage collection an information booklet outlining changes to the 'blue box' recycling program. Beginning Feb. 1, the program will change from weekly to collection every second week. The new arrangement will save the region $3.25 million over the 5 -year fife of a new agreement. Two new materials — cardboard and telephone books — will be added to the blue box program. A collection schedule and information booklet contains full instructions on how to pack material. Oral language festival for Pickering -Ajax Students from Pickering and Ajax public schools who have created oral language activities will show off their accomplishments next week in a festival at Vaughan Willard School, 1911 Dixie Road. The Oral Language Festival will be held two nights at the school: Tuesday, Feb. 4 for Grade 7 and 8 students; and Friday Feb. 7 for Grade 1 to 6 students. Both evenings start at 7 p.m. The oral language program includes a wide range of plays, skits, poetry readings, role plays and all kinds of activities which encourage students to express themselves orally. The festival is normally held during the day. But last year's was such a success it was moved to the evening to allow parents to attend. $750,000 church arson information being sought Crime Stoppers and Durham Region Police arson unit are asking for the public's help in solving an arson which occurred in Oshawa during the early morning of Aug. 13. At about 1:40 a.m. the Oshawa Fire Department was called to a fire at Albert Street United Church at Albert and Olive Avenue. On their arrival they found the west annex totally engulfed in flames. Eventually the fire was extinguished. But the west annex was completely destroyed. Damage is estimated at about $750,000. Police and fire investigators believe the fire was deliberately set. Entry was gained into the church through a south west ground floor window. Once inside, suspects removed some cash from the minister's office and then set the budding on fire. Four persons, believed to be males, were seen running on the railway tracks as the firetrucks arrived. Police would like to talk to these people as possible witnesses to this fire. LI H 7K8. 22 youths face 64 related charges Over the weekend of Jan. 25 there were 22 young persons charged by Durham Region Police with a total of 64 offences. This was the culmination of an alleged sexual assault on an Oshawa girl on Dec. 11. Police investigation resulted in a charge against an Oshawa youth on Jan. 6 of sexual assault and forcible confinement. Instances of harrassment, intimidation and a threatening note against the victim were alleged Jan. 13 and 14. All of the individuals charged are youthful offenders, DRP say. 7 -year planning delay ends for Altona Road A development that has been in the works for the last seven years was finally given approval in a reduced form by Pickering council Monday night. Steve Wagner first proposed developing his property at Altona Road and Highway 2 in 1984. The area was frozen for study. Then in 1988 he reached agreement with town planners for a shopping centre, two 7 -storey office towers and townhouses. Community groups objected. In a series of meetings over the last two years between politicians, residents, planners and Wagner, a compromise was agreed upon. Wagner told council he would reluctantly accept a 5 -storey limit and asked them to come to a decision. They passed the necessary zoning bylaw. Pickering scants report on hydro amalgamation Pickering council wants Pickering Hydro to prepare an independent report looking at any financial advantages of amalgamating with Ajax Hydro and other local hydro commissions. Complaining that buying an electric water heater costs 40 per cent more in Pickering than in Scarborough. Councillor Kip Van Kempen proposed the step as a possible cost saving. He referred to the cloning of the same facilities. billing departments and infrastructure in the two towns. lie moved that Pickering hydro report back on possible savings. The apprehension originated from my personal doubts as to whether any fine art other than the original works or original prints such as serigraphs, etchings, etc., had any real intrinsic value, says the company's Leo Hunnakko. Prior to that time, the art buying public wishing to buy a painting had primarily two options. One could purchase an original painting by a talented, known artist and usually spend a prohibitive amount of money or purchase an open ended reproduction such as a poster with virtually no collector value. For over 70 years, he Criss-crossed Ontario, recording its landscape, its villages and rural life in a distinctive painting style that has won him international recognition and acclaim. Born in Toronto on May 17, 1898, Alfred Joseph Casson could not have imagined the astonishing career that lay before him when in 1919, he was hired by a Toronto printing firm and apprenticed to Franklin Carmichael. Casson hang in the most important public and private collections across Canada, books and films have documented his life; a lake near Sudbury and a township near Thessaion have been named after him, and in 1979 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. They warn one country. That message came across clearly at a press conference Jan. 31 at the constituency office of Rene Soetens, MP. The final, comprehensive report of the People's Forum for Constitutional Dialogue formed at the request of Soetens, was presented by chairman Marc Kealey. "This report will weigh heavily on my views in Ottawa. I will be presenting it personally to Mr. Clark," said Soetens. The 13 members were warmly thanked for the time they devoted to the process. Details were then explained. Forton meetings were held in Ajax, Claremont, Pickering and Whitby. Average attendance was 45. Committee members chaired 22 meetings held in churches, with community associations and at Rotary clubs. One of the most vital meetings was a student forum at Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby. Students from schools in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby were invited. A total of 75 attended. Committee members Stephen Rae and Craig Kamcke made the arrangements. They were delighted with the results.
