Hugh Pugh 1779-1873 m.,mried Elizabeth Williams 1987-3873
This is an attempt, for the guidance of present red fu -...r_
Sonn, to list the many descendants of Hugh Pugh, of Hales.
During the IM's several fsmiliOS bound together by family relation-
ships, common religious beliefs, and a desire to be the owner of their own
lend, emigrated Seem Radncishire, Wales, to Upper Canada, and settled
mostly in Pickering Twp. The heads of these families were Hugh Pugh, his
sons 3dward and David, and 'sdwe rd Morgan. The great depression existing
in the early forties io the Mother Country, Great Britain, also influenced
many to seek new home-, in the new land of hope. - Amerioa. Then, in
Wales all farms were held in lease, and could not be owned. The G-ctry
bad the right to hunt over the fields without recompensing the farmer.
Taxes bad to be paid to the support of the state church, though you were
not a ML"tr of t'bo ostanlished church of gland.
Hugh Pugh, with his wife, Dlizebeth Willtoa:A and family, were among
the Welsh immigrants who settled in Upper Canada, now erpopla prowlrae, in
the year 1842. At the same time came his wife's brother and sister, David
Williams and Mrs. Meredith. He left behind him two or .more brothers,
Josiah, and Rev. Stephen Pugh.
The main reeson for his coming to this land was to bunt for his son,
William, who had come over in 1835• William had always written home
regularly, until all of a sudden his letters ceased. A son, Hugh, who
came over in 18375 had failed to find him. When he bad gone to his address
he was told he had moved on, being engaged in canal work. Some time
passed before he tried to follow him up. He We then told at one place
Of somacna reserhlirg him having been drewnad, end at anotbcr place aame-
ane like him having beer killed; but he wee never kecrl of afterwards.
When hio ptU,Za.arrived they spent what would be deemed a lot of money
in those days, trying to locate him, but with no results, which brought
much sorrow to the family.
The majority of these pioneers belonged to the agricultural class.
They had to face a long tedious and often dangerous sail -boat sea journey
of six or seven weeks, and a toilsome journey from the porta of the lower
prov;gces ar the Atlantic State; but they were blessed with indomdnatable
courage and high ideals. Had these early and heroic people left their
religion and faith behind them, the history of Canada would have been
quite different, and its development in the right direction very doubtgal.
These people were by no means pemtyless immigrants. ^They bad all
been prosperous tenant farmers in Hales, and were persons of means. They
were above average in education for that time; with few exceptions all
could read and }site. They brought their money with them in gold coda,
mostly secured in money belts on their Person. They bought farms already
pertly cleared and with some buildings on them.
It was in the 1830's that Pickering Twp. received its first large
influx of settlers. Than began the formal building end maintenance of
schools. The Township's population grew from 180 people in 1809 to 3,752
in 1842; by 1850 there were 6,385 people, with 18 schools, 7 grist mills;
27 saw -mills, stores, hotels and a tannery. In 1855 11hltby became the
county town of Ontario County. In 1851 control of postal affairs was
entrusted to Canadian Parliament, and a 3C rate, with use of postage stamps
was introduced. 1850-1860 was one of Canada's earliest booms; farms were
rapidly cleared and improved, prices were good, and settlers prosperous
and hopeful. In 1856 G.T.R. was built near the shore of Lake Ontario,
westward to Toronto. Commerce increased; timber and grain were exported,
and clothing and merchandise imported.
The settler's life was a toilsome one, - cutting down trees, logging
and burning, and cultivating the soil. Still their lives had wholesome
joys and elements which tended to develop strong and true character.
Descendents of :ugh Pugh and Elizabeth Williams - cont. 3
For light, home-made candles were first made by winding a rag around
a stick and saturating it with tallow; later they used candle moulds.
They made their awn clothes from their own wool; this we taken to a card-
ine mill, than spun end woven on looms at home. Shoes were mode to order
by the village shoe-maker. Though latterly home-made hooked rugs mere
used as scatter mats, the floors of their houses were bare pine; these
were scrubbed with home-made soft soap. In the cold weather pork ties
salted for summer use. There were stoves for cooking,°but many baked their
bread in outside ovens. Most houses had fireplaces for heating. Horses
were few, and many a beg of grain and provisions were borne on the
settlors' becks, through forest paths to Whitby and Toronto. Soon
"Clearances" surrounded the little log dwellings, which widened season by
season,, until the clearence xas larger than the remaining bush. These
early settlers were of stout hearts; through their deuntless courage,
their faith in a guiding and protective Providence, end through their
heroic industry they patiently laboured until the wilderness was trans-
formed into productive farms.
To these heroic forefathers we wish to pay our tribute.
Hugh Pugh was born March 15, 1777, in the Perish of Llenbadern Fynydd
Jan the County of Radnor, Vkles, about ten miles from Newtown. He we
worried Feb. 1805, to Elizabeth Williams, born toy 21, 1787, also in
Radnor County, Wales. They emigrated from Tales in 1842, coming by sail-
boat journey of six or seven weeks to the Port of Naw York. There they
took a fast steamer 150 miles up the Hudson River to Albany; from there
they want west 250 miles by the die Canal to Rochester; the journey was
completed by boat across Leke Ontexio to the southern shore of Pickering
Twp. Where their son Hugh was than living near-by in tiarkiiam Twp.

farm Penybenk, after their home they had left in Wales. This farm is
still, in 1955, the home of one of their direct descendants, Sidney Pugh.
After Hugh passed, it became the home of his son, Thomas, then of Thomas'
son, Pugh, and now of Hugh's son, Sidney Pugh. abiden tly Fugh and his
family were well satisfied they bad come to this country; in writing to
his son, .dward, in Wales, in 1847, re his contemplated coming over, he
expressed himself as finding this a very fine country.
In their home -land Hugh Pugh and his wife, 2lizebeth, were both
members of Ffseryshelem Baptist Church, Wales; both being baptized by
Mder Joaenh Jones, around 1822. He held the office of deacon for many
years, up to the time he came to this country. Here he attended and
served for many years the Baptist Church at Claremont, until 1864 when,
with six others, he helped organize the Whitevele Baptist Church, which
was nearer to his home.
His wife, Elizabeth, departed this life June 26, 1870 at the age of
83. Her burial was in Claremont Baptist burial ground on June 28. The
funeral sermon was preached by .Rev. J.B. hoose, from II Samuel, Chap. 232
verse 5.
Hugh Pugh passed away Aug 4, 1873, in his 97th veer, retaining his
reason to the lest. His remains were placed by the side of his deceased
wife on Aug. 6, 1673• las funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. Finch,
fron Jeremiah, Chap. 12, part of 5th verse: "How wilt thou do in the',
swelling of Jordan" 't the special request of se my members of the family
end the Whitevale Church another funeral sermon was preached bynev.
Finch on Sun. morning, Aug 17, in the Whitevele Baptist Church, from
iseiah, Chep. 34, part of 17th verse: "^nd his bend hath divided it unto
them by line." The attendance upon both occasions vies very large.

keenly the sense of his irreparable loss.
Their ship docked et pew York. Usually those unable to walk were
placed in quarantine by the immigration authorities. Edward's children
Were se weak he feared they would be detained end he might never see them

they got by.
The trip was then started from New York to the home of his father in
Pickering Twp. A steamer was taken for 150 miles up the Ludson River to
Albany; from where they trent 250 miles west on Erie Canal to 3ochester;

many respects the country hr: had left in Wales. it was net many years

several farms; one, fifteen miles from Stratford at Kilverton, was settled
by his son, Devid, when it took seven days to make the trip with a six -
weeks old baby, all his belongings in a lumber wagon, drawn by a team of
horses and a cow tied behind. Another farm neer CbatboB2 et Derrell,

self to being both a loving and wise mother and father to his family. Y1s
oldest daughter, eleven, helped mother the three younger children and was
soon knitting and making their clothes.
His children were sent to school, and were taken for their religious
instruction to Claremont ffiptist Char ch, where for years he acted as a

Vigorously until his death; he also gave libers lly to other religious
causes. He was devoted to his church and to his family.
lie displayed great enthusiasm in in everything he did, always driving
a very high-spirited horse.
He was fond of children, and his grandchildren always looked eagerly
Sorward to his fairly frequent visits.
Ha kept in touch with many relatives and friends luck in Wales, as
evidenced by the many letters he waste and received from the "Old Land".
Very frequent were the letters to his cousin, Stephen Pugh, who took over
his old home, "Penybank", and to a cousin, Josiah Pugh of Cefenpole. In
;seat ..T these letters conce* was expressed for "the state of the church".
