The Barclay tartan is very bright. The hunting tartan

and strong, worthy of the pioneers who brought it to Canada.
"FOREWORD
The purpose of this work is to put on record what we have been able to gather at this
date about the Barclay family. Older members of this great family will find it interesting.
It will form a solid beginning to help younger members who want to trace their origins
and to carry the work on into future generations.
We apologize for errors. Omissions can be explained, for the people we were able to
reach do not all attempt to keep notes or to accumulate letters and printed material,
so they report from memory alone which is not entirely dependable. Letters sent and
received have mounted in number to probably a couple of thousand.
We have carefully kept all the ones received. Travel, which we have enjoyed,
has taken us to meet people and study records in Cupar, Fifeshire; in Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan; and, of course, many trips to Toronto and Pickering.
For a week in 1975 we were in Cornwall, England, looking for records of the wife of
Eli Gorham Barclay — Mary Ann Harper. There we found the parents of Mary Ann,
along with her two brothers and two sisters — all of whom came to Canada.
Pictures have come from many contributors. Those in colour had to be redone in
black and white, reduced to a suitable size. Many could not be used because of
wrong grouping or poor lighting. Older group pictures were excellent.
We gratefully acknowledge receipt of these many pictures, and have tried hard to
return them to the donors who value them.
The most complete records are of the descendants of James Barclay and the
youngest son, Eli, as the authors are intimately attached to their own families.
"
"The Barclay and Tullis Families back to Early 1600s
We have heard much of the family that came to Canada, and it seemed worthwhile to go
back well over two centuries to note names and dates recorded at a time when few
except the clergy could read or write. Cupar was the home of the Barclays and
marriage connected them with the surrounding villages of Leuchars, Dairsie and Ceres.

"The Barclays of Pickering
George Barclay and his wife Janet Tullis, both natives of Cupar in Fifeshire, Scotland,
came to Pickering Township in Upper Canada. In his petition for land dated 3rd
December 1817 George Barclay stated: ""That your petitioner is a native of Scotland.
That he left Scotland for the Province in 18l6. That he has been resident in this Province,
the greater part of the time in the Home District since the month of October 1816 and
was employed as Teacher of the Common School at Newmarket about six months.
That he has a family of a wife and six children who are now all in this Province.
That your petitioner being desirous of settling on some of the waste lands and being
possessed of means to cultivate and improve..."" now asked for a grant of land.
He was granted two hundred acres but it seems that he subsequently purchased his
farm on Concession VI, Lot 19, from Mrs. Matthews for fifty pounds.
The children born in Scotland were George, Jane, Betsy, Margaret, Nancy and James.
Three sons — David, William and Eli — were born in the big log house on the new
homestead.
George Barclay evidently was qualified both as a teacher and as a Baptist Minister
when he came to Canada at the age of thirty-six. Some of the histories of Pickering
Township claim that he was educated at St. Andrews University but, in 1974,
the Keeper of the Muniments of St. Andrews wrote: ""I regret that there is no record of
such a man as a student at St. Andrews although for a man born in Cupar St. Andrews
would have been the most likely university. However, for a man intending to become a
Baptist church minister at the time, St. Andrews or indeed any other Scottish University
might not have been a natural choice. Instead, one of the Baptist training schools in
England may have been more likely . . . .""
As early as 1821 The Reverend George Barclay was ministering to Baptist
congregations between Markham and Whitby and, in 1824, the Markham Church
records tell how some members delcared that ""the shepherd is not an hireling""
and George replied that ""the labourer is worthy of
6
"
"his hire"" — and so the congregation was split on the question of paying its minister.
He continued to preach and at one time was Moderator of the Baptist Association.
A list of the marriages he performed one year appears on Page 16 of the Home District
Marriage Register, Volume I, 1831-1840 (in the Ontario Archives). He evidently won
friends. Twenty-four years after his death a gentleman wrote to one of his grandsons
about ""... the late Elder George Barkley who came to Upper Canada about 1817
and was my own and my Father's friend. I remember well the first sermon I heard him
present in Markham in '18 or '19. I was then some 10 years old. It was from Psalm
14.2,3 verses 'The Lord looked down from heaven to see if any did understand.'""
In 1825 George Barclay once more petitioned the Government for land, this time for two
hacres for each of his five sons — George, James, David, William and Eli [aged two
months!]. The documents record that there was no objection and, presumably,
land was granted in Brock Township.
In fact in 1846 the boys had farms on Concession VI, Lots 14 (James), 15 (David),
16 (George Jr) and 18 (William). In due time the daughters married and moved to
various farms nearby. Eli remained to work the home farm and raise his family there.
The name of the nearest town, ""Brougham"" (in honour of the great English Whig peer),
was significant in terms of the political leanings of the neighbourhood's inhabitants.
Several area names were changed over the years: Pickering Township was originally
""Edinburgh"" and Whitby was once called ""Radical Corners"".
The people of the area were opposed to the ruling party's habit of land-grabbing.
The Reverend George Barclay was one of the leaders of the local opposition to the
powerful Family Compact and there is on record a heated letter by a Major George
Garnet about ""this vile old preaching traitor that stimulated the people of Pickering ...
to take part in the late Rebellion."" On the other hand, letters of the ""traitors""
themselves reflect their dismay at the
7
"
"violence which resulted from what they regarded as legitimate opposition to political
tyranny. In 1837 George Jr. took an active part in the fight at Montgomery's Tavern and
was imprisoned. He was also sentenced to banishment, but came under the general
amnesty and returned to Pickering Township where he taught school for a time.
In 1840 he followed his brother-in-law westward to Middlesex County and resumed
farming in Lobo Township.
George and Janet retired to a beautiful little cottage on the corner of the home farm.
In the 1840s they helped the younger people to establish a Disciples Church in the
Schoolhouse on the Brock Road where Edmund Sheppard taught. George also was
chairman of the local District School Board. Until his death in 1857 he remained active
as a Baptist Minister. Janet lived in the cottage until her death in 1866.
In the meantime the old house was replaced by a fine new one — still a good dwelling in
1976. The date of this building is in some doubt. Adeline, born in 1853,
told of the difficulty in keeping warm in that draughty big place. C. L. Burton stated that
after 1852 all the children were born in the new house. One thing is pretty well
established: the old house burned down completely on 20th October 1862,
the day Emma Maria (who became Robert Fuller's mother) was born.
George and Janet's youngest son, Eli, acquired the farm and it passed successively to
his younger son, Charles, then to Charles' son Harold. Finally the big house and the land
were sold, except for the five acres retained by Frank and Rowena Barclay for their
business and the old cottage facing the 7th Concession road where Helen (Barclay)
Auld now lives with her husband Gordon. The recent fight to save this and much
surrounding land from development of a great new airport for Toronto appears to have
succeeded; but many believe this is only a lull before the final order for all to get out and
leave the homestead where Barclays have lived for nearly 160 years.

"The GEORGE BARCLAY (of Lobo) Family
While the father pursued his vocation as minister, his farm from 1819 would be operated
by his wife and eldest son, George, then in early manhood. We hear first of him as
affiliated with the McKenzie Reform movement, which was gathering force against a
Colonial Government administered to satisfy England. This son then was farming about
two hundred acres very near to his father's land. By 1837 he had a family of four,
and his involvement is recorded in Colonial Records signed by Sir George Arthur,
Lieutenant Governor (Page 67): ""George Barclay Jun'r was in arms at Montgomery's
and an active follower of Matthews in his expedition to burn the Don Bridge and houses
adjoining. His case is aggravated by the robbery of a person whom he and his
companions pillaged on the highway. The father of this young man is a Baptist preacher
and bears a very bad character for disaffection.""
George Barclay Jun'r and his companions were convicted of high treason and
sentenced to some years in prison, to be followed by banishment from the country.
Captain Peter Matthews, a man with a good record in the War of 1812, was executed
along with Samuel Lount. It is well known that McKenzie, the leader and fiery editor,
got away to the United States, where he remained an exile for several years until there
came a general pardon. On his return the people of Toronto welcomed him and
immediately elected him Mayor of the city.
Family tradition says McKenzie escaped on George Barclay's horse. Also passed on is
the story that militia soldiers, searching for known rebels, fed their horses from the
Barclay oat-bin without finding the guns buried in those very oats.
In the Fort York Museum, Toronto, there is a box fashioned by George Barclay,
inlaid with fine wood, when he was in jail for having been in the 1837 battle at
Montgomery's Tavern. This poem and dedication are on the top of this box.

"""IN MEMORY OF LOUNT * MATTHEWS""
Executed at Toronto U.C. April 13th 1838
Their minds were tranquil and serene
No terror in their looks were seen
Their steps upon the scaffold strong
A moment's pause — their lives are gone.
May vengeance draw his sword in wrath
And justice smile to see it done
And smite the traitors for the death
Of Matthews, Lount and Anderson.
Let Canada mourn for Liberty weep
By the ravage of tyranny torn
And may the true sense of freedom in peace never sleep
Till their banners in triumph are borne.
For ever trust to Freedom's call
For ever see she bids us sally.
We in her ranks would rather fall
Than round a despot rally.
May the king oftener strike the blow
And lay those haughty tyrants low,
Than forge the chains that bind the Free
And hang the sons of Liberty.
12
"
"A second box made during the period of imprisonment is kept by the grandson of
Joshua, living now in Kitchener — Keith Barclay. It is inscribed as follows:
Top.
To
Jane Barclay from her husband George Barclay to be kept as
a memorial for him while confined for high treason in a
land of oppression. June 26, A.D. 1838
One side.
Tyrants their fetters forge in vain
To crush thy spirit — Liberty
like brittle glass shall burst the chain
From hands now striving to be free.
One side.
In memory of Samuel Lount & P. Matthews
executed April 12, 1838
Their words were tranquil and serene
No terror in their looks were seen.
Their steps upon the scaffold strong
A moment's pause, their lives are gone.
After his release from prison and the general pardon, George Barclay engaged in
teaching school not far from the Pickering home. Then in 1848 an abrupt change took
place. The farm was sold to another Scot and the Barclays, with eight children,
took the long winter trek by horsepower and oxen some 150 miles west to Lobo
Township, west of London. They settled on Lot 8, Concession II, Lobo Township,
a 200-acre farm of solid bush. According to the census two years later, 24 acres had
been cleared and were in crop — wheat, potatoes, oats, vegetables.
The census also records that they had 176 acres of bush land; horses, several hogs,
and poultry. This Township was just filling up with ambitious young people.
Joshua Barclay 1836 – 1895
In 1851 the census found Joshua still living with his grandparents on their farm when his
own family had already been two years in Lobo. It turns out that he had lost a leg in an
accident at the age of fourteen. The account written at his death said this occurred in
connection with a threshing machine. It has come down in the family that he was known
13
"
"as ""Peg-Leg"". He farmed for years, and in later years became Treasurer of the
Lobo Council, continuing in this important duty after retiring from the farm to live in
Strathroy. Joshua's children mainly stayed in Ontario. We find them still in Middlesex
County, as well as at Sarnia, Listowel and Kitchener.
On his stone in the Strathroy Cemetery:

"WILLIAM E. BARCLAY of Michigan
William E. Barclay was born on the 7th Concession of Pickering Township and went to
Lobo Township when he was about school age. We know nothing of the local school
facilities. However, George Barclay was a teacher, and so would interest himself in his
family's education.
William married Janet McLeod and by 1871 they had six children. 1871 seems to have
been an important year, for the farm in Lobo was sold to one of William's brothers;
so this year can be accepted as the time when William and Janet moved to another
farm near Lake Orion, Michigan, where seven more children were born and raised.
All but one of the children lived well into the present century.
They must have kept up their connection with Lobo Township, as 'Jessie' spent years
with her Uncle Eli Barclay in the Poplar Hill store. She married Orville Harris, and the
Michigan Barclays still attend family reunions in Western Ontario.
The ninth child, Reuben, married Alvina McGarry and their family of fifteen are well
represented in the Pontiac-Detroit area. We were fortunate in meeting many of this
family at a lovely party in June of 1976. Others of the William E. Barclay family are
spread over the continent — several on the West coast.

"JANE BARCLAY Bentley
Jane Barclay came from Scotland at fourteen, an age when she would be expected to
do the work of an adult in the fields or at the various household duties of the time.
She married a young native of Ireland, Randall Spencer Bentley.
It is believed that they lived west of Claremont on a farm.
Their children were born here, four daughters and three sons.
In 1838, the year when her third son was born, Jane died and was buried at
Claremont Baptist Cemetery.
Within a year Randall married a young widow, Helen (Ogilvy) Scott, who brought one
daughter, Christina Scott, into the family. In a few years three more Bentleys were born.
At this time the younger married people were moving to new land about one hundred
miles to the west. From Markham Township (where he was listed in Brown's Toronto &
Home District Directory of 1846/47) Randall Bentley moved to a farm in South
Dorchester Township, Elgin County. There he donated an acre on the corner of his
farm for a Church and cemetery, where today we find the splendid Mapleton Disciples
Church, one of whose early pastors was The Reverend Edmund Sheppard, husband of
Nancy Bentley. Their son was Edmund Ernest Sheppard, well-known in the publishing
field.
George Barclay, Jr., apparently followed his brother-in-law, Randall Bentley, to the west,
as it is probable that the Dorchester Townships in Elgin were settled before Lobo
Township in Middlesex. Information about these new bush farms was shared among
relatives and friends.
Randall Bentley was for many years a respected Elder of the Disciples Church.
In the early days of this Church these lay ministers were extremely important to their
scattered and small congregations, where ordained ministers like Edmund Sheppard
were so few in number.

"
"[Jane Barclay Bentley branch]
Randall Bentley is remembered as having visited his different Barclay connectins in
Ontario and Michigan. He lived for a decade after the passing of his second wife,
Helen, and was buried beside her in the lovely Mapleton cemetery.
Douglas Legg, a great-great grandson of Jame and Randall Bentley and
great-grandson of Helen (Scott) Bentley, is still an important worker in the Mapleton
Church and community."

"
Maria Bentley died in Wiarton, Ontario and was buried from the Disciples Church in
Meaford.
Her husband, Duncan Sinclair, arrived in Canada from Dundee, Scotland, in 1840: and
revisited Scotland in 1869.
Their son William Bayne Sinclair was married to Lydia Maria Barclay on 29th February
1884 – the same year two of William’s brothers died in Meaford.
Lydia Maria Barclay, on the death of her mother in 1870, returned to Canada from Black
River Falls, Wisconsin, and lived with her Aunt Nancy Knowles. Some time later the
Knowles family moved to Meaford, where Lydia married William Sinclair,
Anna Knowles married John Sinclair, and Jane Barclay Knowles married William Henry
Trout [see page 49], another Meaford man.

"ELIZABETH “BETSY"" BARCLAY (MILLER) (HAMILTON)
In the eastern half of Markham Township a hundred years ago lived a colony of Millers,
not least of whom was George Miller, a Scots Presbyterian farmer of great skill and
fame Betsy's story can only be pieced together, and only from one or two hints and from
the Census records. A fortunate note from Dr. Jenny Renner when she was identifying
early photographs led us to look for Betsy's later career as the wife of James Hamilton.
In the 1837 and 1846 Directories on Markham Concession IX Lot 21 the farmer is John
Miller— by 1846 he is ""John Miller Sr."", and there is also on Lot 21 a John B. Miller.
In the 1851 Census these two
gentlemen appear. John Miller, farmer, born in the U.S. in 1785, a member of the
Baptist Church- and his wife, Betsy, born in Scotland in 1805; and John B. Miller, farmer,
born in Canada in 1814, a member of the
Baptist Church - and his wife, Bettina and three children. It is not
possible for John B. Miller to have been Betsy's son, but it seems very likely that he was
John's son — the implication being that Betsy was John Miller's second wife.
On the census record with John and Betsy Miller is also a George Miller, born in 1832.
It is quiet possibe for this boy to have been Betsy's son, but we have no way of knowing
this at the moment. Nor do we know if she had any children at all.
John Miller's gravestone in the Baptist Churchyard states that he died on
7th March A.D.1851. (The churchyard stands next to land that belonged to
another John Miller who died at the age of twenty-nine in 1858.
And there was yet another John Miller, of Thistle Ha' in Pickering Township,
to confuse the issue.)
Betsy's husband died in 1851 and the next record we have is the 1861
"
"[Elizabeth 'Betsy' Barclay (Miller) (Hamilton) branch]
Census. Now she is the wife of James Hamilton (born in 1808 in Canada of Irish
descent) and the Census even records that they were married in 1861.
James' first wife, Bethany, had died in 1859. The Census also records that Betsy
Hamilton was a ""spinster"", like many other married ladied in this Census
(which attests to the large number of weaving mills in the area).
James Hamilton is listed in all the Directories from 1837 on as the owner of
Concession IX Lot 30. Although Betsy died in 1871, she is listed in the 1871 with
James Hamilton. James died in 1885.
This picture is assumed to be that of Elizabeth ""Betsy"" Barclay, wife of John Miller
and of James Hamilton — both because it was found in a Barclay family album and
because of the marked resemblance, to at least two other children of George and
Janet Barclay: Nancy Barclay Knowles and James Barclay
In the little churchyard of the 1st Markham Baptist Church beside the brick
church with boarded-up windows are the gravestones of many Millers and Hamiltons,
including the four whose lives were linked by marriage: John Miller, James Hamilton,
Bethany Hamilton - and Elizabeth, wife of John Miller and James Hamilton,
who was know all her life as ""Betsy"".
"
"Edmund Ernest Sheppard
This Sheppard achieved a good deal of fame as publisher, editor and writer.
He was one of the founders of the Toronto Saturday Night in 1887 and was chief
Editor until his retirement in 1906. His father, The Reverend Edmund Sheppard of the
Church of Christ Disciples, came from Newark in England and married Nancy Bentley,
the daughter of Jane Barclay and Randall Bentley.
Edmund E. Sheppard was born in Elgin County in 1855 and died in 1924 after retiring
to California. He had married Melissa Culver at Mapleton, where his father was Pastor
of the Disciples Church. As a very young man he had lived in the Mexican border
country, where he was a cowboy and drove a stagecoach. Many of his tales were of the
few years of adventure there. He had one ambition never satisfied — in politics.
He ran unsuccessfully twice for Parliament, and also for Mayor of Toronto.

"ELIZABETH 'BETSY' BARCLAY {MILLER} (HAMILTON)
Betsy came with the others from Scotland and was old enough in those days to do a
woman's work as well as to help with the multitude of farm chores. We have little further
information about her except from census and church records.
By 1851 she had married John Miller, and lived on Lot 21, Concession IX of Markham
Township. She was widowed in 1851 and, in 1861, married a close neighbour,
James Hamilton. We have found no record of children.
Her death occurred in 1871 and James Hamilton survived her for fourteen years.
All three are buried in the 1st Markham Baptist Churchyard on Lot 22, Concession VIII.
"
"The story of Margaret Barclay's life in Canada has had to be pieced together.
If she has descendants, we have not been able to find them. She was born in Scotland
and came to Pickering with the family. In March 1831 she was witness at the marriage
of her brother, George, and Jane Willson at the Baptist Church in York,
and in December of the next year she married Robert Barrie.
Twenty-six years later she was left a widow with eight children and turned to
dressmaking to support her family. Stones in the Brougham churchyard on the grounds
of the former Christian Church mark the graves of Margaret and Robert Barrie.
In the Directories of the Home District Robert Barrie is listed first on Pickering
Concession VIII Lot 24, and later on Concession VI Lot 14. In the 1851 Census he is 'a
farmer, born in Canada, a member

of the Disciples Church, living in a log house”. In 1861 Margaret appears in the Census
as a widow, and living with her are her children Robert, Betsy, Margaret, Alexander and
Ida. In the same Census is her son John, a farmer, married, with a daughter and a
step-son.
Margaret’s Niece, Lydia Sinclair, knew her quite well for the last twenty years of her life.
Lydia kept this picture and on the back of it she wrote:

"
"NANCY BARCLAY (KNOWLES)
Nancy Barclay came to Pickering at the age to start school. She married Abraham
Knowles, who farmed Lot 20 on the Broken Front Range of Pickering Township near
the lakeshore. The fine brick house, built about 1847, stands close to the Pickering
Nuclear Power Plant.
The Knowles family came from New Jersey in 1803 and fanned out westward along
Lake Ontario. Most of Nancy and Abraham's nine children married and apparently
moved westward also. William lived in West Liberty, Iowa, and in 1906 George was in
Pasadena, California.
The Disciples Church of Pickering (where the cemetery remains at the corner of the
Brock Road and Highway 2) was 'set in order' in 1843. Charter members were
Abraham Knowles and wife, David Barclay and wife, and the wife of James Barclay.
The name Knowles appears frequently in the Disciples Church annals —
so too does the name Trout. In 1867 Nancy's daughter Jane married William Henry Trout,
a millwright, mechanic and inventor who in 1916 published The Trout Family History,
a valuable reference.
Bethany College in West Virginia is a Disciples Church College. Jennie Steindorf
Renner, a great-granddaughter of Nancy Knowles, is a graduate of the College and
recently was given an honorary Doctorate for outstanding service over the sixty years
of her association with the College.
Another of Nancy's great-granddaughters, Dorothy Davis Darsie, a skilled needlewoman,
is in possession of a fine sampler worked all those years ago by Janet Tullis Barclay —
truly a family treasure.

"Almira Barclay married Alexander Ketchen, the village blacksmith of Brooklin, in 1860.
One of their sons, Will, lived in Port Credit. Another, Blair, moves to Fergus, Ontario,

"Almira Barclay married Alexander Ketchen, the village blacksmith of Brooklin –
their children scattered far. William lived in Port Credit. Blair moved to Fergus where
he raised purebred cattle, but his son John farmed for only a short time and the land is
now a flourishing development. Blair’s children all graduated from university –
Margaret to become director of dietitians at Toronto General Hospital,
Helen to marry a teacher who became principal of King City High School,
and Barclay to serve the federal government in the Manpower division.
Janet Ketchen and her husband, Hugh Rose, lived in Mexico City and then in Sudbury.
Allie’s son Irving Roger became a pharmacist and had two sons - John with an
insurance company in Peterborough and Allan being Canadian Ambassador to Surinan.

James Barclay – 1815-1869 and his wife Hannah Caroline Parnham – 1818-1904
James Barclay
So attractive are these portraits of James and Hannah Barclay that they inspired a
grandson, Robert George Barclay, to a life-long hobby of family research,
to commission the Scots Ancestry Research Society to trace the family in the records of
Cupar and other towns in Fifeshire, and to write down his recollections of the family
members whom he knew.
James was the youngest Barclay child born in Scotland. His education was probably
excellent, as his father and brother were both schoolmasters and education,
as it is to many Scots, was vitally important to the Barclays. Because James died when
he was only fifty-four, there is not much material to be found.
"

Hannah lived to be well known to her grandchildren. She came to Canada from
Nottinghamshire at the age of thirteen. The day after the family landed in York in
June of 1832, Hannah’s mother died of cholera. Shortly thereafter Hannah came to
Pickering Township to live with The Reverend George and Mrs. Barclay.
James was twenty-two and Hannah not quite nineteen when they were married by
James’ father, and this document in George’s handwriting is one of the family treasures
Hannah attended a school for young ladies in England and one of her many
accomplishments was watercolour painting. Several of Hannah’s

paintings represent contemporary scenes such as this.
There is no record or tradition that James took part in the 1837 McKenzie Rebellion.
Certainly he sympathized — he was a non-Conformist and subscribed to a radical newspaper (The Oshawa Reformer). It is assumed that he began farming in the row where the Barclay brothers, across the road from their father's farm, were all listed on the Sixth Concession in Brown's Toronto And Home District Directory of l846/47. Between 1838 and 1861 Hannah bore ten children and in 1860 the oldest daughter, Almira, was married.
On September 9th, 1862, at the County Court in Whitby, a Grand Jury was sworn in by
judge Zacchaeus Burnham with James Barclay Foreman. According to
The Oshawa Vindicator James Barclay and his fellow-jurors expressed satisfaction
with the order and cleanliness in

the gaol and in finding so few persons there, especially in the female department.
In later years his sons were noted for their devotion to civic duty and for their kindliness
and it seems fair, in the light of James' one reported public action, to suggest that they
inherited these characteristics from him.
James and Hannah, with others of the family, founded the Disciples Church in Pickering
and two of their sons, George James and Eli, became Elders in that Church.
At some time between March 1864 and 1869 James and Hannah moved to Oshawa.
It is not known what James did there. They lived on Church

George James Barclay lived in Oshawa for the first years of his married life. In the 1871
census he was listed as a machinist, and later he was a successful businessman and a
very active leader in the Disciples Church in Oshawa and Toronto. In 1892 he became
Secretary-Treasurer of the Toronto Conservatory of Music, where his bright nature
and attractive disposition made him most popular until he died very suddenly in 1903.
His daughter married a doctor in Toronto and Frank carried on a business there.
His other son, Walter, was an outstanding musician who earned a music degree at the
University of Toronto and later studied in Leipzig, eventually becoming Dean of
Music at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music.
Anne Jane Barclay married William Lauchland, born in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland.
They lived in Oshawa and raised a large family. Of their children, Norman became a
pharmacist and lived in Vancouver. Lyman practised medicine for many years in
Dundas, Ontario. His office is to be a museum. It is apparently the oldest continuing
practitioner's office in Ontario, having been continuously occupied by a McGill medical
graduate since 1832. Lyman's daughter, like her grandmother, raised eight admirable
children; his son became a professor of Engineering at

William and ‘Retta’ Barclay married 1870
the University of Western Ontario.
Of James' and Hannah's sons, Eli David seems to have had the most formal education.
He earned his B.A. at Bethany College in West Virginia in 1872 and immediately
became Adjunct Professor of the School of Ancient Languages. He taught in colleges in
seven different States and preached and wrote for the Disciples Church.
He was married, but had no children, and died at his brother Lyman's home in Whitby.
William Henry sought his fortune in the United States and married a girl from
New York State. They lived in Illinois and Minnesota and were prominent
supporters of the Disciples Church. Their son Walker was a lay pastor in Pipestone,
Minnesota. It is to William's granddaughter, Edna Peak, that this book owes much of its
inspiration and many carefully checked names and dates.

Not very much has been discovered about Albert. He was christened Albert Ernest
Ash in honour of the Disciples Elder famous in Oshawa, Joseph Ash. In the 1871
census Albert is listed as a miller living in Oshawa, and in 1904 when his mother died
he was living in New York City. Here, it is said, he had a seat on the Flour Exchange.
He died some time before 1925 and was survived by his daughter, Antoinette.
Helena Louise lived to be eighty-four. Her husband, Fred Mackintosh,
was a prime favourite with her nieces and nephews and she herself was known to them
as ""Auntie Mac"". They had a summer camp on Lake Ontario near Whitby where the
young relations spent many happy holidays.
Youngest son of James and Hannah was Lyman, with whom his mother made her home
until her death. Perhaps the family's move from Brooklin was prompted by the need to
provide higher education for the children. Lyman attended Oshawa high school,
then articled as a lawyer and was called to the Bar of Ontario in August 1878.
By this time he had already been deputy for three years during the illness of J. V. Ham,

Registrar of the High Court of Justice, Registrar of the Surrogate Court,
Clerk of the County Court and Local Master of Titles. He served under the same
Judge Zacchaeus Burnham to whom his father had reported as juryman in 1862.
In 1881 he was formally appointed to succeed Mr. Ham and, in addition to carrying out
his duties ""intelligently, promptly, accurately, efficiently and courteously"",
found time to be on the Board of Education and the Public Library Board for
twenty-four years, to be Vice Chairman of the Ontario Ladies' College for fourteen years.
In 1912 he moved his growing family to Edmonton where he set up a law practice and
promptly entered public life as member of the School Board and Chairman of the
Public Library Board, being the person chiefly responsible for obtaining the Carnegie
Grant for the Library building. His portrait still graces a room in the Library.
For a time he was Police Magistrate of the City of Edmonton, but illness forced him to
retire in 1924, the year before his death.
Lyman and Kate Barclay were noted for their kindness, hospitality, and for their lively
family.

Virginia became a nurse and a trained musician, and for many years was soloist with
the Baptist Church in Peterborough, Ontario, where her husband was Science Master at
the Teachers' College.
Jack worked with Reveillon Freres and returned to them after his war service in France,
staying with the company when it was taken over by Marshall Wells until he retired in
1950. He lived in Edmonton.
Marjorie was Public Health Nurse with the Edmonton School Board for many years,
and in 1972 Mr. Justice Kane recalled her ""pleasant, gentle way with children"".
She is still the keeper of family traditions and rememberer of birthdays despite her
eighty-seven years.
Don enlisted with Jack in the Third Canadian Mounted Rifles but could not pass the
medical exam to go overseas. After the war he worked for Canadian Western Lumber
as its Eastern Sales Manager. He was very much in demand as a public speaker and
in 1927 was the youngest man ever to be elected Chairman of the Wholesale Lumber
Dealers' Association of Ontario. For many years he made a home for his mother in
Toronto and remained a bachelor until 1960.

Helena practised law with her father. After two years at St. Hilda’s, Trinity College,
Toronto, she finished her B.A. at the University of Alberta, taught school,
articled in the law office of H.H. Parlee and was called to the Bar of Alberta.
She gave up legal practice, but her husband and son both became Q.C.s and Benchers
of the Law Society. For some time Bill has been Director of the Alberta Institute of
Law Research and Reform.

Helena entered with enthusiasm into the spirit of this book and gave invaluable moral
support, advice, financial assistance, and all the information she could remember or
collect. It is a pity she did not see the book in print, but she took enormous delight in the
collection of pictures which was made, and in sharing her knowledge with the writers.
Like his father before him, George Barclay was young in heart. If Lyman at the age of
fifty-seven could pull up stakes and head for the open prairies, so too could George face
change debonairly. He travelled his country from coast to coast and loved it openly.
From Whitby Public School and Collegiate he entered University of Alberta to study
accounting, at the same time working with the Credit Foncier. In 1915 he enlisted,
was commissioned in 1916, served with the PPCLI in France and was wounded.
On one leave he and Jim Fuller toured Fife in search of their Barclay ancestors and
succeeded only in discovering Scottish hospitality!
For twenty years George held executive positions with the Soldier Settlement Board.
At the beginning of W.W.II he was loaned to the British Purchasing Mission and in
January 1941 was appointed Chief Insurance Officer of the newly created
Unemployment Insurance Commission, a post he retained until his retirement in 1957•
After this he told lively historical tales on the CBC radio network, wrote articles for the
Hudson Bay Company Magazine, The Beaver, and built up a fine collection of books,

Frances Mary and Gordon- 1972
Isabel, the youngest daughter of Lyman Barclay, kept up a formidable correspondence
with as many family members as she could find, and was that invaluable member of the
family who keeps everyone up to date with everyone's news. She suffered many years
of ill health with considerable fortitude and cheerfulness, and her collection of papers
and memorabilia have also been a wonderful addition to this family history.
His Honour Judge Frederick William Gordon Barclay, Q.C., when he retired in 1970,
was the senior Provincial Judge in Alberta, having graced the same Bench where his
father had occasionally presided fifty-odd years earlier. During World War I 'Barc',
at the tender age of sixteen, joined the 194th Highlanders and wangled his way
overseas. He was severely wounded but returned to study law at the University of
Alberta, practised law and won for himself an enviable record of public service like his
father, uncles and brothers before him.
Lyman's grandchildren are scattered across the continent and beyond,
one having just returned from a CUSO assignment in Ghana. We hope this story of their
'Begats' will show them what a proud name they bear.

"DAVID LYONS BARCLAY
George and Janet Barclay brought six children to Canada.
The first of their three sons born in Pickering was named David Lyons.
In 1842 he married Maria Houck and lived in a substantial brick house on Lot 15,
Concession VI, Pickering. After Maria’s death he married Mary Mackie,
a much younger woman, who took wonderful care of him on their farm and during
retirement in Stouffville.

David was reputed to be a very good farmer and carpenter.
The wooden spoons and other tools he made were treasured by his nieces.
He had no children. When Jane (Preston) Barclay died, David and Maria took t
wo of William and Jane’s children. Robert stayed for several years while he attended
school. Nancy lived with them until she died at the age of fifteen.
"
"WILLIAM SLEIGH BARCLAY 1821-1892
This son, the second born in Canada, grew to manhood seeing his sisters and brothers
leaving home and setting up on various farms. He finally married Jane Preston and set
up on a fifty-acre farm across the corner from his old home. By 1861 they had five
children: David and George, daughters Mary, Thamar and Lydia. Two more children,
Robert and Nancy, had been added to the family when the farm was sold to John Miller,
a very progressive Scot. The Millers had been close neighbours for over ten years.
We have yet to learn where the family were until 1868 when their arrival is recorded in
Black River Falls, Wisconsin, then a lumbering centre with farming just opening up.
When David Barclay became prominent as a Judge, it was always said that the family
had arrived on a new railway line riding the very first regular passenger train. Jane,
the mother, died in 187O, as well as her second son, George, who is reported to have
been in uniform in the American Civil War. As a Canadian, he could only have been one
of those adventurers who received a ""bounty"" to substitute for an American
conscripted into the service. He could have been under eighteen when that war ended,
so it is unlikely that he saw active service.
Upon the grievous loss of a mother and son, the family returned to Pickering where we
find them divided among relatives. Mary was in the Miller home — those good
neighbours. The little ones, Robert and Nancy, were with Uncle David and his wife
Maria; while William himself was listed as farm helper on his sister Nancy Knowles'
farm down by the lake, along with Lydia who remained and grew up before leaving this
country.
The eldest son, David, was soon back at the Wisconsin town where he had a mixed
career as woodsman, manufacturer of cloth, and operator of a dray business.
He was seriously injured by a runaway team and was lame until his early death.
His portrait is prominent in the Jackson County Court House at Black River Falls where
he held a position as Judge until his death at the age of fifty-four.

"
"[William Sleigh Barclay branch]
William himself, with others of the family, came back and settled on a farm near Hixton,
north of Black River Falls in the vicinity of Sechlerville and Taylor, where some of the
family are buried and where descendants still are living.
The youngest, Nancy, died when she was only fifteen. We find her name on the stone
along with Aunt Maria's, in the churchyard of the old Disciples Church at the Brock Road
on #2 Highway a couple of miles from the lake. Uncle David's name was added to the
stone in 1904, after a second childless marriage.
Lydia remained with her Aunt Nancy on the Abraham Knowles farm for some time,
and then married William Sinclair at Meaford, Ontario. He was a grandson of her
Aunt Jane Bentley. They, too, went to Wisconsin and later followed her sister, Thamar,
to California where their family grew up. Lydia's daughter, Mrs. Evalyn Graves,
is still giving valuable assistance to advance this Barclay story.
The youngest son, Robert, raised quite a large family at Black River Falls.
He once visited various Ontario relatives in the early 1930s with his youngest son,
Harold. They visited his cousins, Emma my mother, John at Owen Sound,
and others in the Lobo district. The next contact between our families was in late July,
1974, when we visited Vivian, daughter of Robert Barclay, in Minneapolis.
We had dinner there and spent a good time going over family pictures and making
notes on all the relatives. We also visited Robert's grandson, Lyman T. Barclay and his
family in Minneapolis. We have since discovered some of Mary's family not far from
Detroit at Carleton, Michigan, but have not met them yet.

"The BARCLAY / BURTON Family
George Burton came from the Markham-Pickering area, where he travelled the country
with horse and wagon making regular weekly trips to serve farm people whom he got to
know very well. His regular stock would be canned goods, sugar, flour, dried fruits,
some plain yard goods, men's work clothing and, no doubt, he took orders for other
items to be delivered in a week. He soon knew and was married to Eliza,
eldest daughter of Eli and Mary Ann Barclay. The wagon delivery business gave
place to a general store at Green River. Living quarters were under the same roof so
Eliza was soon in the business too — particularly the tidying up and cleaning at the
end of each long day. **
Various changes in conditions and an increasing family took them to Toronto,
where they set up in the grocery business in a shop at Oxford and Augusta Streets with
adequate living quarters in the same building. The business was a failure so George
was soon back with the horses he loved, travelling the city for a wholesale firm.
He was fond of dealing in horses.
My own knowledge of the family home and all the goings on at their Clinton Street house,
a few doors south of Bloor Street, came when I was taken there by my mother with Ella,
my younger sister. The family cow pastured in a sort of gully east of the house where
now is a solid Manning Avenue. They had a stable rented nearby for the cow and horses.
I was a farm boy and everything about these domestic animals was of vital interest to
me. Odd as it may seem, here I saw my first proper bathtub where I had a very joyful
scrubbing. Ella and I were taken by Aunt Eliza to call on Charlie at the Fancy Goods
Wholesale place. Ella chose a coloured doll. I was six but no toy in the shop interested
me enough to make a choice. I wanted a team of real live horses.
Visits there were repeated when we got to Toronto on our own. On a stop-over there in
late 1916, coming from Camp Borden (probably
98
"
"my last visit with the older couple), I recall Uncle George taking me for a walk up to
Dupont Street where there were extensive market gardens put to sleep for the winter.
Nell had married and with her husband, Bob Bond, employed by Ontario Hydro,
lived in with the older couple. This was the last time I saw Uncle George.
I have no knowledge of Eliza's final years.
Charles Luther Burton, whose business beginnings were with H. H. Fudger in the
wholesale trade, moved at the call of this merchant to a position in the new Robert
Simpson Company. In earlier years there he made two trips a year to Britain and
Europe as a buyer. From this he moved up to take over as general manager of
Robert Simpson Limited. As this enterprise grew with its various department stores and
large mail-order business, his son Edgar took over and, later, Allan, a younger son who
had distinguished himself in World War II in Europe. Recently Charlie's grandson,
another Edgar, has taken over as general manager. In each case the senior man,
on handing over the active reins of the business, has advanced to Chairman of the
Board.
Eli Franklin Burton distinguished himself as a physics scholar over the years,
being very much a leader in developing the electron microscope which extends human
knowledge into vast areas. He rose to be head of the Physics Department of the
University of Toronto.
Recently Colonel Allan Burton married Mrs. Betty Kennedy, a lady well known to
T.V. viewers as one of the regular panel of 'Front Page Challenge'.

"Mrs. Cow – 1900 milk supply for the George Burton family
Through the summers Mrs. Cow was pastured in a grassy hollow not far south of Bloor
and east of the Burton’s back door. This small field of 1900, now filled in to street level,
is occupied by Manning Avenue. During the winter months Mrs. Cow,
along with the driving horses, occupied a stable nearby.
Care of the animals was entrusted to one of the boys; much fell upon the shoulders of
Frank, whose spare time from studies was interrupted with stable talk and the job itself.

"The BARCLAY/BOYLES Family
Eli's daughter Elizabeth married Malcolm Boyles, and they lived in Markham Township
while Malcolm attended Veterinary College in Toronto. He graduated in 1893 as V.S.
(Ontario), giving his home address as Mongolia, Ontario. By that time they had four sons,
the younger two being twins.
They moved to Toronto Junction, occupying various addresses near where Keele Street
crosses Dundas. In the 1894 City Directory J. Malcolm Boyles was listed as Veterinary
Surgeon at 99 Dundas Street. In 1895 both surgery and home were at 118 Dundas.
Here they lived through 1896, but the surgery was at 4 Keele Street and by this time he
also ran a Livery Stable. In 1897 the family lived at 47 Keele Street,
with the two businesses across the way at 22 Keele Street,
where they remained until late in 1899. Then in 1900 we find them housed and in
business at 346 Dundas (south side), with no mention of the Livery Stable —
their last place at The Junction.
We know, of course, that by the summer of 1901 they were firmly established in the hotel
business at Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan. Kate and Lena, born in Toronto,
were six and three respectively, and the four boys were through school.
This writer remembers a visit to their home on Keele Street,
next door to a Fire Hall where good horses would receive plenty of training and care
night and day. I visited them on the farm near Lipton, Saskatchewan,
in 1919 where Aunt Libby and Harry lived with Roy and Collette.
Recently in the Museum at Markham we found a very helpful lady who showed us
records of 1837 and an 1860 map. John Boyles, Malcolm's father, lived on Concession
IX, Lots 23 and 24, farming 150 acres. So on a snowy day we were able to locate these
farms and the Boyles Cemetery, where several generations of them have been buried;
then we went north to locate the former hamlet, Mongolia, on the same Road 10.
We found, too, that John Boyles had lived there in 1851 — a man born in the
United States, whose family as Loyalists had come from New Jersey by way of
New Brunswick.

Mrs. Mary Barclay second wife of John Barclay of Owen Sound
In the 1880s John Barclay and his young wife lived in Drayton, Ontario,
where their daughter Lila was born. Her mother died when Lila was but a child,
and she was taken by her Grandmother and Aunt Adeline to the old home,
where she grew up as an elder sister to the Charles Barclay family.
She married Wint White and their family is now spread from Alberta to Halifax – most
still being in the Toronto district.
John’s second wife brought him some acres up the west hill at Owen Sound,
where he grew vegetables and fruit which he peddled in the town. When his wife died,
John retained the property.
Later he married a young lady and they had two fine daughters, whose families are now
making a significant mark in our country.

"THE BARCLAY/FULLER FAMILY
Emma Maria (Barclay) Fuller, my own mother, grew up on the old Pickering farm and
spent a year at least in the Jarvis Street High School in Toronto. She was proud of the
Barclay name, and spoke with precision and had a well-rounded vocabulary.
She wrote many letters, keeping very close to her sisters and brothers. Robert Fuller
was from Pickering too. Of English extraction, he had only a short period of formal
education, but was a reader and very able in discussing events and politics.
His mother was the stern Methodist type with firm views on the evils of cards,
dancing and drink. His father was James Chappel Fuller.
The James C. Fuller family lived on various rented farms until they made the decisive
move to western Ontario, where they purchased a hundred acres near Mitchell.
They soon replaced the log house with one of fine white brick, but in each house a
Sunday School was established for the neighbourhood children. Robert and Emma
rented a farm nearby and were fortunate in being able to rent good land.
Logan, Fullarton, Hibbert Townships were their homes for the eighteen years after their
marriage, by which time they had nine children. Ross, the youngest, lived only four
months during the move to Downie in 1898.
These parents differed from their neighbours in plans for their growing family.
Rather than acquire more land, their aim was more education.
The children were fond of school because of more than average success in their
studies. The move to within a mile of Stratford provided much better school facilities for
the younger ones. The two eldest sons had some months' training in business college,
while five of us went through Collegiate to graduate from the Stratford Normal School.
Harry Roger soon wearied of business and followed Herbert to 'the West'.
Herbert B. Fuller was in Saskatchewan riding as a cowboy on a ranch -
soon to be foreman where he trained both horses and men in the work.
Harry joined him as partner in contract work ""dirt-moving"" at various sites.
He finished at Kipp, Alberta, running a post office and general store.

Harry Roger Fuller
was killed in action in France in 1917.
This grave is in La Targette British Cemetery two miles west of the Vimy Memorial.
Harry was killed in action in 1917 and is buried at La Targette Military Cemetery behind
Vimy Ridge. Arthur Gordon died at home the same year, and Edward 'Ted' was taken
out of high school to work on the farm in a severe labour shortage due to the war.
The years 1917 and 1918 were a long, tough period for home folks.
James Clifford was on active service early in 1916, Harry and Robert soon after.
These two were wounded in action. James received the Military Medal at the Somme;
then was commissioned and was awarded the Military Cross in France.
Jim and Robert served as officers in reserve units during the 1939 War.
All the family married and raised families — none, however, as numerous as the family
from which they went out into the world. By 1976 five remain, all in a well-earned
retirement: Ida Mills in a nursing home in Regina; the author in his 54th year in Windsor;
Bessie, Ella and Edward Tullis in the Stratford district close to their numerous
grandchildren.

Charles Albert Barclay inherited the homestead farm from his father, Eli Gorham Barclay,
and passed it on to his second son, Harold, who raised a large fine family there.
Later Harold moved to another farm north of Lindsay, from which his family went into
different kinds of work and are doing very well.

Dr. Lyman T. Barclay trained in medicine in Toronto and in Europe to become a very
successful plastic surgeon. In World War II he attained the rank of Colonel and was in
command of a military hospital at Basingstoke, England, where much surgery was
required.

"Bertha Barclay was the youngest in the Eli Gorham Barclay family. She had the usual
education of the time, taught school, probably in Markham Township, and married
Robert Ramsay, a native of the Peterborough area. They soon made the trek to
southern Manitoba, where they made a farm home - a 'homestead', no doubt.
Here my father visited them in the late summer of 1906. Before 1912 they had
given up farming and were living in Toronto, where all their interests have centred to the p
resent time. Their three middle children died quite young. Lawrence went to war in a
Schoolboys Battalion in 1916, and died in action with the Canadian Fourth Division in
the big August offensive of 1918.
Roberta married a soldier from that war who became a dentist and practised on
Gerrard Street East in Toronto. She now has two daughters with young families living
near her in Toronto. Both daughters have gone back to teaching, with higher
qualifications attained by extra hard work.

"Acknowledgements
My very particular thanks and acknowledgements are directed to the two — Kathleen
Bowley who did the final work on the James family and added items on David, Betsy
and Margaret, and also the typing — and to my wife Kathleen Fuller for her help as well
as her critical, constructive interest in detecting errors and suggesting improvements.
To my son, Robert A. Fuller, for sketches, the cover design, and for expert advice - to
the late George Barclay of Lobo Township - to Mrs. E. M. Long, Poplar Hill - to The
Reverend Orlo Miller - to Mrs. Irma Aziz of Byron - to Mrs. Rachael Giles now living in
Michigan - to Mrs. Barbara Shotwell and Mrs. Thera Harris covering the Detroit area -
to Mr. Douglas Legg of South Dorchester - to Mrs. Jenny Renner of Ohio -to Mrs. Vivian
Anderson of Minneapolis for coverage of the William S. Barclay family - to Mrs. Nancy
Ross of Burlington - and to my many
cousins in the Eli G. Barclay family.
R.M.F.
And I owe many thanks to Robert and Kathleen Fuller for
allowing me to join them in this undertaking, and to my husband, Robert Bowley,
for moral support and splendid photography. I am happy to remember the contributions
of cousins who have become friends by correspondence over the past years.
In particular my debt is great to the late George Barclay, my father, to the late Isabel
Barclay of Toronto and the late Helena Hurlburt of Edmonton. I received much kindly
help from Archivists of the Dominion Archives in Ottawa, the Ontario Archives in Toronto,
and Mrs. Muriel G. Luton of the Disciples Church Archives - as well as from Mrs. Donald
Barclay, Mrs. George McBrien, Mrs. Edna Peak of Pasadena, California,
Mrs. Evalyn Graves, Dr. Jenny Renner, Mrs. Dorothy Darsie, Miss Mavourneen Barclay,
Mrs. Louise Russell, and Mrs. William H. Hurlburt of Edmonton.
Finally, the interest and encouragement of my children and of my nephews and nieces
have made me feel that the little book was worth
writing for them.

"The publisher and main author of The Barclays Of Pickering was born in Perth County
and educated at Stratford until he went into teaching near home. He comes of English,
Scottish and United Empire Loyalist stock. Of the latter, Hubbard and Willson were in
Pickering prior to 1800. Barclays were there in 1819 and Fullers came in 1832.
He served three years in the Canadian Army, nearly a year in France where a 'blighty'
some weeks before the end of the war sent him to hospital in England. He resumed
teaching in Sarnia, then in Windsor until he retired as principal in 1954, when he had
already served on City Council for eighteen months.
In the second war he wore the kilt of the Essex Scottish, 2nd Battalion, with the final
rank of Captain, and recently received the Royal Canadian Legion fifty-year medal.
He produced a Fuller history ten years ago, and in 1972 wrote and published Windsor
Heritage, a book of background material on Windsor and the Michigan area —
a book to be found in libraries in our larger centres.
Kathleen Kendall became his wife in 1956. She too was a teacher in England where
they were married. After assisting with the compilation of the Fuller history,
she produced a history of the Kendalls, who have lived in Northamptonshire for many
generations. Her second family history is in the making; it is of her mother's family,
Hurst and Robinson. Her interest and help have been of the greatest value in the
Barclay work.
In all these efforts, each has helped the other with interest, enthusiasm, critical aid and
actual hard work.
\
Kathleen Richmond Barclay grew up on the prairies and served overseas in W.W.II
with the W.R.C.N.S. Has an Honours B.A. in English and History from Queens,
made post-graduate studies at University of Toronto and The Sorbonne.
Was Librarian of the Royal Commission on Arts, Letters and Sciences. In France,
while studying, was executive secretary of the Canadian Embassy Visa Section.
On return to Canada married Robert Eric Bowley, a chemist, philatelist and expert
photographer. For the past seven years has been Parish Secretary of St. John's
Anglican Church, Peterborough.
