The Old LIVERPOOL HOUSE
A
HISTORY
RECALLEI
1827
to
1982.. .
and so it goes
THE OLD LIVERPOOL HOUSE, for-
merly The Liverpool Arms Hotel,
was an Original Landmark in the
Pickering area.
Almost 160years ago (in 1827tobe precise),
this building was constructed.
English tradesmen, placed bricks and mortar
4 layers across. They were paid the tidy sum
of 50 cents for a 12 -hour work -day. All were
landed immigrants, as was the man from
Merseyside, Liverpool, Mr. Robert Chacker,
who hired themtohelp constructthis House of
Character.
Their skills and craftsmanship has endured
the test of time, evidenced as you look.about
you today.
Your Hosts Maria and Jim Skentzos, bid you
welcome. We invite you to share in this brief
interlude about The Old Liverpool House.
Originally, The Old Liverpool House was the
private residence of its creator, Robert Chacker
who had married Sarah Newman.
The raising of afamily of four children, one of
whom, their daughter Sarah, maintained fam-
ily ties, and married Howard Toms into this
House of Finery.
Throughout times of change, The Old Liver-
pool House has served many purposes.
Strategically situated on the old King's High-
way, it became a Main Stagecoach stop, serv-
icing travellers en route Toronto to Kingston.
With its close proximity to Lake Ontario and
Frenchman's Bay, it became a great conven-
ience to the Merchants of the Seas and Lakes,
whose grain ships docked atthe Bay. Passen-
gers and Crew alike, were frequent visitors.
A distinguished guest, who visited often, was
Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A.
MacDonald.
During Prohibition in Ontario (1916 to 1927),
The Old Liverpool House remained a Hotel. (IIt
has been said "Bootleg Whiskey could be
acquired" during those 11years). Then came
the "Great Depression". The Old Liverpool
House became a General Store and Post Of-
fice; eventually becoming a Rooming House.
Subsequent Liverpool House owners; the
Marshall family of Pickering, "sold" in 1944 to
the Jatiouk family.
In 1964, Mrs.. Harriet Jatiouk and The Old
Liverpool House, were faced with Expropria-
tion, to allow modem day expansion and wid-
ening of Highway 2.
With determination, Mrs. Jatiouk, negotiated
to have The Old Liverpool House 'picked -up"
and simply moved backonthe same property,
allowing progress of the time to take place.
Mrs. Jatiouk hoped that some day The Old
Liverpool House could be maintained in Char-
acter, yet become a Fine Dining Establish-
ment. (Little did she know Maria and Jim
Skentzos shared the same hope).
In 1979, Mrs. Harriet Jatiouk passed away.
On April 23rd, 1980, Maria and Jim Skentzos
became the new owners, A Hope had become
a Reality.
In 1982, following two and a half years of
careful planning and refurbishing, The Old
Liverpool House was "born again", to carry on
a Fine Tradition -- CATERING TO PEOPLE.
We hope you are enlightened in sharing this
brief interlude, only a tiny capsule of events
over a period approaching 160 years.
Please enjoyour"Bill of Fayre", and visit us as
often as you care to "Dine Out".
