THE SHIP DREDGE PRIMROSE
AND THE
TORONTO HISTORICAL BOARD
"We're going to the Toronto Marine Museum
and the hest part is, it's on board a boat!"
Not just any boat, a 138' dredge, built in Canada in 1915 that was
responsible for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, parts of the
Welland Canal, Hanlan's Point and most major harbours of the Great
Lakes.
Dredge Primrose is the last of a lingering local remnant of a fleet of
dredges that helped construct the most grandiose inland water
transportation system in the world. She was decommissioned in Kingston
Harbour in 1969, where she was left to become an eyesore, constantly
irritating the local residents. In the early 80's she was sold for scrap but
never made the journey to Toronto and was left tied on the La Salle
Causeway where she sat boarded -up, vandalized and gutted by mysterious
fires, apparently with no where left to go.
In 1984 she was purchased by her present owner, James McKean
and towed to Frenchman's Bay in Pickering where a long, expensive and
painstaking process of clean-up, and restoration took place. The vessel
was originally purchased by Mr. McKean to use for a restaurant.
Today, 81 years since she first moved out to open up Ontario's
waterways, her hull and fittings are in the same immaculate condition they
were in 1915. Originally built as a suction dredge, moving into and
through water beds which it was dredging, the boat was built to last. The
builders utilized black iron plate over fabricated steel frames and is
robustly constructed. Transverse frames span the bottom and are 24" high
with 6" "T" flanges on the top and bottom and spaced 24" centres
midships where the bulk of the machinery was originally installed. The
vessel's original machinery and equipment has been stripped out, thus
making the vessel several hundred tons lighter. After removal of the
machinery the inside hull surfaces were cleaned of oil and dirt buildup,
washed and painted with a rust resistant paint.
With the original machinery removed, large, unobstructed areas
were created within the hull, main deck and upper deck. All together, the
vessel has approximately 10,000 square feet of available floor space ready
for services and interior decorating.

Me Ship Dredge Primrose
What a fitting tribute to the watery ghosts of history that an
enterprising group of farsighted people in the form of The Toronto Marine
Museum and Project Management Canada, should latch onto this tentacle
of time and restore the Dredge Primrose in a commemoration of, if not an
illustrious past, at least a romantic one. Her days as a dredge are over, but
we can still show respect for one of the grand old ladies of inland marine
history. This our real Great Lakes heritage.
Dredge Primrose will be much more than a sterile display in a
marine museum building - a visitor will actually be standing in a vessel
that helped to build our Country. The possibilities for interactive displays
are endless; the huge draw for school children is undeniable and will
present a.meaningful and unforgettable learning experience with our past
and present.
The owner of the ship is presently selling it because his property
where Dredge Primrose was berthed in Pickering has been sold. Although
there are other alternatives for the ship, Mr. McKean has put a
considerable amount of blood, sweat and tears into the refitting of the ship,
and it is his choice that the ship should go to the Toronto Marine Museum
where she can retire in glory and continue to be of service to the people of
Canada and a tourist draw to our American visitors. There is a tremendous
amount of material, equipment, photos, plans and other paraphernalia
available about the ship, some in the possession of Mr. McKean and some
in the possession of the Kingston Marine Museum of the Great Lakes.

5.21 Welland, ea. 1900: The DREDGE PRIMROSE, built by Matthew Beatty and Sons of Welland, was a
much more sophisticated version of an essential canal workhorse than that shown in Fig. 20. The company
specialized in a variety of equipment designed for maintenance and reconstruction of the waterway, not merely
dredges. Irish-born William Beatty had settled in Thorold in 1834, obtained a mill privilege f rom the Welland
Canal Company, and went into the lumber business with tanning as a sideline. SCBM: n-1188
