W. D. MATTHEWS & CO. THOS, MOODY, Agent.
Mr. Birrell Speaks
SIR,—I thought I would write you a few
lines to contradict a few statements in
vour last issue as regards the strike of coal
hands at Pickering Harbor. In the first
place we asked no more than is usually
paid here and other places. Secondly,
whoever informed you that I was the prin.
cipal agitator in the strike told you a
falsehood, for I can prove by the other
hands that we were all equally agreed to
stand out for the pried we got on the first
load. Thirdly, you say that the rat work.
men, as you are so minded to call them,
were subjected to all sorts of threats and
jaers. That I most p)sitively deny, but
the abusive language, much to your sur-
prise perhaps, came from Mr. Sparks him.
self—calling us robbers and other mean
expression. Now surely Mr. Editor in all
fairness we have a right to run our own af.
fairs. Now, Mr. Sparks, when his boy
was driving horse for the ice company in
the winter, and getting 60 cents per day,
and the men 90 cents to $1 per day, told
his boy to strike for 61 per day, for he
said it would take a man to do the work,
and was the means thereby of the other
boy losing his job, for as in our case, they
did not get what they asked. Now, Mr.
EdW)r, we were not asking any raise, only
the usual price paid, for we can unload
quicker where he gave the 25 cents on the
first load, than we can where he only
wants to give 22} on the third load. But
he was asking a big raise for his boy, ac-
cording to the wages then being paid.
Now, when the two Kings, father and
son; came down, and we explained our
case to King, Sr., he thought we were per.
fectly right and said he would not inter-
fere. But the son was bound to go to work
fair or not. In the end they all went to
work, that is the rat gang as you call them,
and were not interfered with afterwards.
Now, Mr. Editor, I was down to Pickering
on business, and on returning home who
should I meet but Mr. King Jr , and we
started to talk about the coal, and one',
word brought on another, and warmed as
it went on till it cameto blows, aud J.King,
according to his oath, procured a piece of
rail with which to defend himself, but did
not break my nose as you state. And it
was not a birch gad as your informer states.
Perhaps his ancestors have been in the
habit of using birch in the making of bas-
kets and canoes that he thinks anything in
the way of wood is birch. Now, Mr. Ed-
itor, your informer states that I drew a
knife. Now, such a thing I did not have
about me, and that was proven by Mr.
Kings two witnesses at the the trial, and I
would like you in future to be careful who
your informer is, whether he is reliable or
not before you print the like, because if
I hear any more of that I will make them
prove their word. The only witnesses to
the affair both swore at the trial that they
saw no knife, and that ought to be suffic-
ient. Now I do not profess to be a Saint,
and if I get in a fuss of this kind now and
then it is no more than might be expected,
when the Deacon himself was so near it
but a few .weeks gone, calling Mare and al.
most getting to blows with another mem-
ber. Hoping von will snare me a brief
space in your valuable paper to vindicate
myself as far as possible,
I remain yours,
CHARLES BIRRI'LI,.
