HISTORIC PICKERING VILLAGE
The History of our Community
In 1883 J. R. Brownridge built a new ""modern"" general store on the corner of
Church St. & Kingston Rd. In 1885 he sold the general store to William Dunbar for
$1,250.00. Story on Page 4.
The Dunbar General Store is now the home of Towne Fireplace and Patio.
Kingston Rd., leading to the bridge over Duffin's Creek, The Spinks Mill, located next
to the creek was built in 1809 by a prominent Quaker and colonizer. Now located on
this property is Moodies Motor Inn.
The steeple of the original St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Kingston Rd.
is conspicuously absent. Once it's most outstanding feature, the steeple was
destroyed by lightning in the early fifties. Only the tower remains. Built in 1891,
it is Romanesque in style, with typical rounded windows. In 1930 it became
the Pickering United Church, which has now moved to a new locale on Church St.
The Presbyterian presence reappeared in 1949 with a new St. Andrew's also on
Church.
Keeping with the tradition of Excellence, the Blaisedale Montessori, Grade 1
Elementary program is now located in the historical chapel. Future Skills of
Canada is situated in the lower level.
The original St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 545 Kingston Rd. was built in 1891.

Mystery on the banks of Duffins Creek
By Pam Pryjma
The banks of Duffins Creek possess an unsolved mystery, which has puzzled
generations of Pickering and Ajax residents.
A monument-like structure, apparently constructed over three hundred years ago,
has attracted a great deal of attention by archaeologists and the curious in the past.
On July 7, 1893 the Pickering News featured an article on this mysterious stone.
It is described as an eight foot cube-like shape. The land surrounding it formed a
natural amphitheatre.
Located on the east bank of the creek, about two miles from the village and
approximately one mile from the lake, it was constructed of many smaller granite
rocks bound with a red mortar-like substance. Over one hundred years ago,
the newspaper referred to it as a Jesuit's altar, on the unconfirmed speculation
that it was build by early missionaries.
This theory was based largely on the description given by the oldest local residents
in 1893; being that it had had a hole in the top once filled with lead.
Attempts were made in vain to blow it up with gun powder.
These one hundred year old reports state that at that time it was heavily covered in
moss and the stump of a large pine tree remained where it had once grown out of the
top.
Such a description leads one to speculate on the age of this monument, even in 1893.
A follow up article was published in the Pickering News on July 14, 1893,
to report on the large number of visitors who were drawn to the site after reading
about it. All agreed that the description was ""perfectly correct.""
During an interview, an elderly gentleman first made the Ajax LACAC aware of this
intriguing landmark about five years ago.
He described how, as a boy, he and his friends were drawn to the site by rumours
that it was an ""Indian chief's tomb"". Local youngsters believed that it contained bones,
and many attempts were made to dig around the base to unearth is mystery.
Mr. Field, the owner of the land, would chase the young boys away when their
digging became too aggressive.
It is believed that his historic structure still stands on the shore of Duffins Creek.
The site is now surrounded by the Discovery Bay development.
The extent of its deterioration is unknown, as is its age and origin. Unmistakably,
it is man-made, and is likely further camouflaged under another one hundred years
of moss and tree stumps.
If those reading this article rediscover this curious historic sight still hiding on the east
bank of Duffins Creek, please share its location with us all.
The banks of Duffin's Creek possess a mystery that has baffled generations.

HISTORIC PICKERING VILLAGE
Historical churches of Pickering Village
Four impressive reminders of a very important aspect of nineteenth century village
life still stand in Pickering Village today; its churches. The most outstanding spire
and steeple belong to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.
Topped by a cross, its steeple is still covered in the original 1871 slate.
This Gothic Revival church features characteristic pointed windows, and rose-coloured
trefoil dormer windows in the roof. The building was threatened by fire in 1913
when the rectory burnt down.
The steeple of the original St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Kingston Rd. is
conspicuously absent. Once its most outstanding feature, the steeple was destroyed
by lightning in the early fifties. Only the tower remains.
Built in 1891, it is Romanesque in style, with typical rounded windows. In 1930 it
became the Pickering United Church, which has now moved to a new locale on
Church St. The Presbyterian presence reappeared in 1949 with a new St. Andrew's,
also on Church.
Natural disaster struck yet another of the village's houses of worship when the roof of
the Quaker Meeting House on Kingston Rd. was struck by lightning and destroyed by
fire in 1908. Like the original St. Andrew's, it
features plain rounded windows and local red brick. Its austere appearance typifies
the Quaker way of life. No longer Quaker, it is called the Doric Lodge.
While the oldest church in the village, St. George's, does not have a true steeple,
it has a small four-sided bell-cote designed to shelter the bell from the elements.
The church is Early Gothic, and like St. Francis, features pointed windows,
but in this case true Gothic style, having a tall narrow appearance.
Its bricks are different too, brown instead of the local red ones. In 1859 they
supplied bricks to build a new church to replace the log one, in return for the land.
At the cemetery site on Elizabeth St. was the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Across
from the former United church, now the Blaisdale Dance Studio, stood the small red
brick Bible Christian Church.
This is how the villagers worshiped over a hundred years ago.
