HomeMy WebLinkAbout2539• An Early "Conoersatiun Piece" at Green Ricer — Reading from left to right:
C.L.B. ae a little shaver (leaning against post), George Barton his father,
a brother, Franklin (now Professor E. F. Burton, University of Toronto),
his mother, with G. E., another brother in her arms, and standing against
post, Edgar David, brother, who died in his nineteenth year. The store's
delivery wagon is even at the right, in the foreground. Credit and barter
rather than "cash-and-carry" was then the custom. The exact date of the
picture is unknown, but it was probably taken about 1882. "Most of the
village population," says Professor Burton, "is in the fringe."
