The charming brignt village of Pickering is situated in Ontario County, on the North shore of
Lake Ontario. In energy and enterprise it is up-to-date, within easy distance of Toronto by
Motor Car or Grand Trunk Railway. It offers a delightful location for a summer home
The Independent Telephone Company here has purchased the old G. N. W. telegraph line
to Claremont, Greenwood and Brougham. This will shortly be fitted up and new phones
connected with it. The Bell telephone is also installed in the Village.
Pickering is picturesquely situated to the east of the Rouge, the winding creek which in
olden days gave to the village the name of Duffin's Creek is still quaintly beautiful.
The many handsome residences bespeak the appreciation of the home makers, and their
efforts to add to nature's attractiveness.
The lake is visable from many parts of the county, and seen
through the beautiful blue distance is an impressive feature of the landscape.
The climate of Pickering is ideal, it is a charming spot wherein to spend one's summer vacation.
The surrounding country offers to the agriculturist such golden opportunities that one marvels
that our young men are not more eager to take a farm in this township rather than the far west.
Here by close attention to business, the agriculturist may in a few years become wealthy without
the many disadvantages of pioneer life, at the same time retaining good health, thus happiness
is assured. This tends to give the rural life an attraction unknown to those unfortunate enough to
be city bread winners.
The Farmers' Institute in this district brings to all the benefit of science and practice as taught at
the Agricultural College, the application of scientific principles to the practical operations of the
farm, and the interchange and dissimulation of the results of practical ex-

perience on the part of successful farmers, have increased the returns from the farm, far in
excess of anticipation. The Women's Institute fills a long felt want in advancing the interests of
women's work, and the broadening of the home maker's sphere. The churches of which the
people are justly proud, include the Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopalian and Roman Catholic,
here also is the Friends' Meeting House, where for many years the Friends of the Province
have gathered for Yearly Meeting, with representatives from West Lake, Norwich, Yonge Street
and other places.
The school is well equipped and the standing of the pupils speaks well for the advancement of
education.
The business of the village is active and up-to-date, so that one has not to be wearied with
shopping trips to the city, but, when in Toronto can enjoy the day sight seeing unburdened by
parcels, thus the expected Radial R. R. service, or Suburban train service will be greatly

appreciated by merchants, giving the opportunity of frequent trips to the markets, that they may
buy to suit their customers.
A branch of the Western Bank is located in a most attractive banking room, and doing a
flourishing business.
The village is well supplied with Dry Goods, Grocery, Boots and Shoes, Confectionery, Drug
and Stationery Stores.
A wide-awake newspaper, "The News," issued weekly, supplies interesting local news and is
earnest in furthering the best interests of the place.
Home-seekers will find in Pickering the right site on which to build, friends that are true,
neighbors that are kind.
Health means wealth, Pickering has the best.
Pickering is an ideal spot for the home of the city business man.
