A half century of service to local farmers by the Wilson family will be celebrated in
Whitevale on Saturday, September 25, 1982. Past and present customers and their
families along with suppliers are invited to an outdoor barbecue at the Community
Park in Whitevale between 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. Activities will include lucky draws for
the adults plus games and prizes for the kids. The feed mill in Whitevale has been
operated by the Wilsons since 1932 when the late Mr. T. L. Wilson purchased the
business. In 1959 his four sons, Orville (Red), Gordon, Alvin, and Kenneth took over the
family firm, and have added grain drying, fertilizer service and bulk feed handling facilities.
Mrs. Audrey Hornshaw, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.L.Wilson has handled the
accounting and bookkeeping at the mill since 1932. A devastating fire leveled
the original water-powered brick building in 1961, but a modern feed mill was
erected on the same site in 1962. Business has maintained a steady growth in
spite of approaching urbanization and farm ownership changes. Today the mill is
powered by electricity. Modern, complex rations for balanced nutrition of livestock
and poultry are made to computerized formulations. An extensive line of animal health
products, sanitizers and pesticides is carried. Pet foods and supplies for horse owners
find a ready market in the surrounding homes and farms. Local grain is received at the
Wilson's mill each harvest for drying and transporting prior to processing. Employing a
total of seventeen persons, the Wilson brothers offer a wide range of services to farmers.
Their well known sales representatives, Fred Williams and Jim Roefs are specially
trained and particularly knowledgable of farmers' requirements.

WHITEVALE,ONTARIO
Majorville (later Whitevale) and Dunbarton, had their beginnings in the prosperous
1840s and 1850s. The site of Majorville contains one of the best mill seats in the
township on the headwaters of Duffin's Creek. When the British decided in 1843 to
allow American grain into England duty-free, provided that it was ground in Canada,
good water-power sites close to harbours became very valuable. In 1845 Truman White,
then only twenty years of age, acquired the Majorville water rights and built a large
gristmill and sawmill which immediately prospered. Later he added a large woollen
mill to his works. A little village composed of his workmen grew up around the mill.
To serve the booming grain and flour trade created by White's mill, William Dunbar
and a number of associates formed a harbour company which built a dock and
warehouses on Frenchman's Bay and laid out a town plot which was named
Dunbarton after its founder.
