Drive to preserve
Little Red School
has raised $5,000
AJAX • More than 15,000 has been collected to help restore the Little Red School House
on Pickering Beach Road.
A month ago, Ajax councillors Duncan Jewell and Joe Dickson launched a campaign to
raise $50,000 to assist in the restoration of the
school. The total cost will be $240,000, which will be raised from three areas -$50,000
from public donations, $50,000 from the town and $140,000 from the provincial
government,
""Public support is wide-spread,"" says Jewell. ""We've received donations from
individuals, industry and organizations.""
A $1,000 - donation from Tarxien Co. Ltd. has helped boost the drive.
Resident Helen Hedge has also donated $1,000 to the cause.
In addition, Jewell says a number of service clubs and organizations have made
recommendations for the use of the facility. It has been suggested that the school be
used as a meeting place for service clubs and as an art school. Meanwhile social
agencies have also expressed an interest in the facility.
To help the project, a model of the Little Red School House was built by Pickering
Village resident Robert-Wright. People are asked to buy a $25 shingle for the roof of
the model. The model will be on display at the Mayor's Levee on New Year's
Day at the Ajax Community Centre from 1 to 4 p.m.
The school was built in 1882 and is Ajax's only one-room. schoolhouse.

Businesses asked to help restore the Little Red School House in Ajax
AJAX • More than 600 Ajax businesses have been asked to help save the Little
Red School House on Pickering Beach Road.
Ajax councillors Duncan Jewell and Joe Dickson launched a campaign to raise
$50,000 to restore the one-room schoolhouse. The total coat of restoration will be
$240,000 which will be raised from three areas -$50,000 from public donations,
$50,000 from the town and $140,000 from the provincial government,
To help the project, a model of the Little Red School House was built by Pickering
Village resident Robert-Wright. Jewel and Dickson are asking people to buy a $25
shingle for the roof of the model. So far, $2,500 has been pledged.
Jewell says the local business community has been approached to support the project.
Meanwhile, individuals are welcome to contribute.
The school was built in 1862 and is Ajax's only one-room schoolhouse.
It still stands on its original site on Pickering Beach Road.
