HomeMy WebLinkAbout2182Article taken from the Pickering News, April 8, 1892,regarding a concert presented by The
Sons of Temperance, Brougham.
Those who attended the concert on Friday evening given under the auspices of the Sons of
Temperance, were well repaid for their time and money. Mrs. E. Wilson sang in her usual
goodstyle, while John A. White did his musical part in a pleasing manner. Thos. Henderson,
our teacher, pleased all with his reading anent "The mouse killing episode." T.H.
Greenwood gave a couple of recitations and completely captured his heareres. Mr.
Greenwood is a young man possessed of remarkable elocutionary powers, and will yet be
heard from in the near future of "this Canada of ours." Following the literary part of the
evening, the Pickering Dramatic Club, presented "Ten Nights in a Barroom." Like some
others I expected that this part of the program would be a fizzle, but I was agreeably
surprised, as were all in attendance. The play is a heavy one, but yet every character was
well sustained. J. A. Hilts, as Sample Switchel, is the star, to use a theartical term, and with
his witty sayings and comic exterior captivates his audience. J.T. Richardson, as Mr.
Romaine, did nobely, while W.G. Ham and C.F. Hill filled the positions of Slade and his son
Frank, to a nicety. Miss May Gordon performed the part of Mrs. Slade with grace, while Miss
Hall is a dedided success as Miss Cartwright. As the Morgan family Misses Woodruff and
Peart, and W.J. Clark, have few equals. Though unlike his true nature, W.D. Rogers makes
a perfect villan, as Harry Green; and S.H. Jeffery does the part of Willie Hammond credit.
Although it was 12 o'clock when the curtain drew, the audience were loath to leave the hall.
The music for the entire program was furnished by the famous Whitevale Ochestra, and was
no exception, neither descredit to theat company. I think the people of Brougham will help
me out in saying that the above was the best concert ever given in Brougham, and it is a pity
that the program cannot be repeated. Receipts of the evenning some $34. The only
objectionable part of the procedure was the small admission fee. The lodge members
treated those who had taken part in the program to a supper in their hall, after the concert,
and the ladies received many a word of praise for their excellent pastry.
