Heritage Property
By Debbie Blair
The White Church at Erskine Cemetery will be declared a heritage property if its
congregation supports the idea.
Pickering Town Council approved a notion on Monday that a by law be made to
designate the church as a building of historical significance.
Murray Stroud, a member of the Erskine Cemetery Board, said although the board
unanimously supports the designation, approval by the congregation is still necessary.
Stroud said the property is owned by the United Church and ""
we must have the ratification of the congregation as a whole"".
Cost of repairs to the building, which was built in 1884,
are paid by the cemetery board.
Stroud said that Dunbarton residents would like to see the White Church remain
standing as it has played an important role in the history of the area and serves
Pickering residents as a community cemetery.
