Illustrations: DUFFIN'S CREEK, AJAX -- where it enters Lake Ontario, is shown in the top photo.
On the far shore is the proposed site of a $700,000 marina. At the present time low lake water
levels and little rain has lowered the creek considerably. Lower picture shows the mouth of
Duffin's Creek as it appears from Rotary Park on the east. Low lake levels here have left a wide
beach which is put to good use every week-end during the summer. —Photos by John Mills.
AJAX (Staff) — Recent publicity regarding the development of the mouth of Duffin's Creek as a
marina or boatel has aroused a great deal of interest in this area. Owner of the property on the
West bank of the creek at its mouth is L. G. Hough who purchased it some years ago with such a
possibility in mind.
The Marshall A. Foss Corporation Ltd. has studied the area and expressed the opinion that
properly developed the location could become an internationally famous yacht haven.
Marshall Foss, president of the company said unlimited funds could be made available for the
project. Pier construction and dredging would be major cost items, but the topography is well
suited for the project and will undoubtedly attract many of luxury boat owners from Toronto and
other big centres.
In addition to facilities for berthing and handling of all classes of water craft, an outstandin
""boatel"" will have a restaurant and a snack bar with dining pavilion and patio overlooking the
lake on the west side of the yacht basin.
It would provide a location for class A marine sales and service and display of marine pleasure
equipment, ramps for launching boats from trailers, as well as eqipment for handling large vessel
services, a fishing centre and many shore recreation attractions.
Mr. Foss stressed that the project woulud necessarily be of the highest calibre.
It could not be something in the ""amusement park"" category.
BIG POSSIBILITIES
Referring to the possibility that the area further up the creek will become a conservation area and
such a scheme would tie in well so that the whole area would become an integrated feature which
would benefit communities for miles around.
In recent months the Metro Conservation Authority has been making a study of this section of
Duffin's Creek with idea that it could be developed into a park and wild life sanctuary.
The Ajax Planning Board has already made preliminary studies of the proposition made by the
Marshall Foss Coropration. It is expected that matter will come before town council at its next
meeting on August 11, at which time a recommendation may be in the hands of council.
