Robert Beattie of stealing a horse.
—The case of horse stealing preferred
against Robert Beattie, of Brougham, by
G. W. Decker, came uo for preliminary
hearing before Police Magistrate Harp-
er at Whitby Thursday evening. After
hearing the evidence for the crown,
Robert Beattie was committed for trial at
the June assizes. He was admitted to
bail, however, himself in 8200 and his
father in the same amount. Considerable
interest was manifested in this case by
the people of the township, and many
Pickeringites were present at the trial.
The facts of the case are briefly these :
Last spring Beattie purebased a mare
from Decker and for part of the purchase
money gave a lien note. When the
paper became due, he refused to pay it,
and Decker took possession of the horse,
which was at the time tied in Gordon's
shed. The note was left in the buggy.
Some few weeks after. Beattie or some
person for him, took the horse from
Decker's rig, while the vehicle was in
Gerow's shed at Brougham. Decker
procured a search'warrant and again got
the mare. He also laid information
against Beattie for horse stealing. Beat-
tie's defence is that the mare was his,and
that he bad a right to take it. The mag-
istrate gave Decker possession of the
horse until such times as the case is de-
cided by the higher court. It is A, rAr y
complicated affair, and opinions as to its
ultimate termination are paried.
