page 8.DunbartonThe funeral of Mrs. Isabella Smith , widow of the late Robert Smith, took place
here on Thursday last. It was well attended (notwithstanding the terrible state of the roads)
by most of the neighbours and friends including a large number of the oldest residents of
Pickering. The old lady lived to the great age of 92 years and 2 monts, and had maintained
good health and strength until five years ago, when she began to fail. Mrs. Smith and her
husband came to Pickering over 55 years ago, were they have resided ever since with the
exception of two years spent in Scotland about 30 years ago. They were the oldest of all the
old settlers who came to this district from around Largo, Fifeshire, and settled this part of the
country. With the exceptiomn of Mrs. Annan these settlers are all gone, and their places
occupied by the second and third generation. Mrs. Smith and her husband who predeceased
her some 18 months ago were consistent members of the Presbyterian church of this place,
and were very much respected in the community. Their experiences of pioneer life were of the
hardest kind, having been several months on their own place before they could discern a
neighbour's light form their own residence, but were amply rewarded by a handsome
competence and a ripe and happy old age. Speaking of pioneers we have often thought that a
Pioneer Society for this township would add to its present noble and praiseworthy societies and
isntitutions.
