The First Issue of the
PICKERING NEWS
Every newspaper office has its files. In most offices a copy of each issue is
filed away and when the fifty-two issues are complete, they are bound and go into the
archives. The Pickering News, for some reason other had not filed the first two years,
consequently we have never had that privilege of exhibiting OUR FIRST ISSUE.
This summer there passed away an old citizen, of Pickering Township, an elderly lady
who had made a practice of preserving original papers and volumes.
Other members of the family, some time after the passing of their sister,
were re-arranging certain of the deceased's effects, and found placed away,
in a trunk, with other papers a copy of the first issue of this publication, Vol. 1. Issue
No. 1. Nov. 11th, 1881. published that year by W. H. Higgins, for the publishers.
The present publisher, who has been with this paper for forty-six years,
is greatly indebted to Mrs. T. C. Brown for the gift of this copy which we prize a
great deal. For any of our friends who may care to see that copy we have hung same for
a while in our windows here.
