or a combination of all three. Many different
types of drugs have become available in the
past 15 years, each designed to lower blood
pressure in a somewhat different way.
Perhaps the most widely used group of drugs
are the tranquilizers that have a quieting effect
on the brain and help lessen nervous tension.

Other groups of dregs known as vasodilators

Did You Know That
ThE Bruce Trail was officially opened Sat.
June 10th by Hon Rene Brunelle, Minister of
Lands S Forests. The northermost tip of the
frail is Tnbormory, and this will be the site
of the opening. The devotion of the clubs, trail -
makers and hikers in general has resulted in
the preservation of this unique, scenic natural
resource -- 440 miles of opportunity for people
to "get back to nature "
Last year from mid April to mid November,
4.1,664 golfers played at the Don Valley Golf
Course. In the same period 49.801 played at I ium-
ber Valley Golf Course. The Ontario Public Golf
Course championship at Humber Valley comes up
this year on June 16th.
There is more truth than fable in the suggestion
made this week by the publisher of this news-
paper. He said 'If Russia and the United States
joined forces --it would mean an immediate end
to any thought of war, for who would even con-
sider fighting both these big powers."

A New Force & Uniform
Canada"s Armed Forces will begin evaluating
a distinctive Canadian uniform early this sum-
mer.
The uniform• dark green in colour, and its
insignia. will be tested by 400 members of the
forces. It is the same for officers and men,
except for rank insignia.
Nenior commanders and selected personnel at
all rank levels will wear the uniform during
the trial period of approximately nine months.
Distribution is based on the size of the command
or formation, with Mobile Command - the largest
- receiving 45 uniforms.
The 100 -man guard of honor and flag parry
on duty at EXPO 6; will be the largest single
body, of personnel to test the uniform. The guard
will be issued with the uniform within the next
month.
Designed for day-to-day wear, the uniform
will not replace combat or environmental cloth-
ing.
The basic uniform, made from a crease resis-
tant polyester fibre/wool fabric, will consist
of a jacket, trousers and cap, with a light
green polyester fibre cotton shirt, dark green
tie and black shoes and socks.
A peaked cap will be worn by all ranks.
Warrant officers and equivalent and below will
have a plain peak while officers will have trim
on the peak. The cap badge will reflect the
service, regiment or corps.
All officers of the rank of brigadier, or
equivalent, and above, will wear a new common
cap badge. All other army and air force per-
sonnel. and navy officers and chief petty officers,
will continue to wear their present cap badges.
Naval men up to and including the rank of petty
officer second class will wear the badge now
worn by petty officers first class. Pettyofficers
first class will wear the same badge as chief
petty officers.
The uniform jacket will be worn without a
belt, except for ceremonial occasions.
For ceremonial occasions a dark green belt
with gold stripes will be worn by officers and
men.
Officers will wear braid on the lower sleeve
made from old gold fabric. Sergeants and below,
and equivalent, will wear gold fabric chevrons
on the upper sleeve.
On the lower sleeve warrant officers first
class, and equivalent, will wear the Arms of
Canada; warrant officers second class, and
equivalent, will wear the crown and wreath of
laurel, and staff sergeants and equivalent will
wear- a crown.
Buttons on the jacket will be of similar color
to the gold fabric. A matal collar badge will
also be worn to indicate service branch.
For hot weather, a short sleeve field jacket
will be worn with the neck open. Officers will
wear their rank insignia on shoulder epaulettes
on this jacket, while the men will wear wash-
able rank insignia on the sleeve.
The uniform includes a light weight raincoat,
and a heavier weight top coat. A greatcoat for
winter wear is being designed.
It is anticipated that some changes may be
made in the uniform following a review of
the evaluation reports.
While the present trial uniforms will be of
a light weight cloth, a heavier weight of cloth
is being developed for evaluation under colder
environmental conditions.
A new uniform for women serving intheforces
is also being designed. This uniform will be
m ade from the same material used for the men's
uniforms, and will be tested at a later date.

a very large web,
usually one on a
branch.
The best and surest
remedy for these is
to remove the branch
and burn them. You can
try spray but I still
like the old fas:iioned
method and you are
sure you are rid of
them.
A lot of complaints
have been received
this week about trees
and shrubs that have
started to leaf out and
then seem to shrivel.
In some cases it could
b e the lack of water
for some beds are very
dry now if you have not
been watering the last
week. Another cause is
mites and these are
difficult to see.
You should in all
cases spray with an
ornamental spray to
rid your trees and
shrubs of any pest that
they may be bothered
with.
The second is to give
them a good feeding of
preferably a liquid
fertilizer which acts
immediately andwater
well. If this has
happened to your fruit
trees, particularly
p ach, it could be a
fungus. In all cases a
good general purpose
spray should be used
but be sure that you DO
NOT use a systemic on
your fruits and vege-
tables.
Privet hedging is now
being attacked. This,
too. needs spraying
and if you want to take
the easy way uut use
the systemics which
last for a few weeks
as the insects will con-
tinue to nibble if you
don't act.

Peonies are now
starting to get large
buds and in some var-
ieties will soon be in
bloom. The blooms do
need support. If you did
,not place a ring around
the base of them when
they first started to
grow, you can get a
peony ring at the nur-
series which will open.
Or use a coat hanger
and place this around
the bush at the bottom.
Gently raise this up
the plant till it be-
comes snug. Do NOT
pull it too tight for the
blooms will be too
crowded. The ring will
hild the peonies up off
the ground and at the
same time will not
show.
As the tulip blooms
fade snip them off for
they will take all the
food available to them
by fertilizer through
their leaves to produce
seed instead of storing
up bloomfor next year.
As the season was

longer to ripen and
turn yellow before we
can remove it.

Lilacs are now in

cut anymore you will
be cutting off next

already set. Keep this
in mind when you cut

Give lilacs lots of

lWhat Happened?
Mr. Pat McGrath of the Bay Ridges Rate-
payers' Association asked Council on Monday
evening what action, if any, had been taken
on the 900 name petition he presented to them
a few weeks ago.
The petition protested the increased mill rate
and was presented to Council with the inten-
tion of it being presented to the Provincial
Government.
Reeve Laycox asked the Township Clerk what
had been done with the petition who in turn
advised that no action had been taken. He asked
Mr. McGrath to provide him with the original.
West Shore Association has agreed to supple-
ment the petition with 1200-1500 names from
the West Shore area, and West Rouge will
also further the cause by circulating a petition
in their area.

Report From Queen's Park
On the 17th May, the Honourable W. G. Davis,
Minister of Education, announced the launching
of a program in 1968 which will eventually
ensure that all elementary school teachers in
the Province will have university education.
Under this program, which the Minister of
Education described as the most significant de-
velopment in teacher education in this century,
teachers colleges for the education of elemen-
tary school teachers will be integrated with
the Province's universities.
It is contemplated that the first transfer of the
program to a university will be made effective
.July 1, 1968 and that conceivable all will be in
readiness for two institutions to make the
transfer at that time. Other transfers will be
made at the earliest possible date. In all cases,
the terms under which the transfer will be made
will be by agreement between the university and
the Department of Education along the lines
governing the operation of the colleges of educa-
tion already in effect.
The first step probably will provide that a
prospective teacher entering university would
take a two - year program with each year de-
voted partly to academic work and partly to
teacher training.
At the end of two years he could go out and
teach or continue his university studies.
Later, the requirement might change to a full
year of academic work, followed by the two year
program described above, so that the student
might still be able to leave after atotal of th.-ee
years.
This pattern could then be extended to the ulti-
mate requirement of a minimum of a degree
and certificate. The full details of the program
have yet to be worked out with each university
concerned.
When the program gets under way, students
planning to become teachers will take their
academic courses on the same basis as other
students in the university but they will not get
academic credits for their teacher - training
courses.
They will spend four years after Grade 13
getting their degrees and certificates, with
each year incorporating a combination of aca-
demic and teacher - training courses.
Entrance training standards for teacher -
training students will be gradually upgraded
from the present 50 per cent to a minimum
of 60 per cent by September, 1972 - or earlier
if this is possible.
The Minister of Education also announced
that the last initial summer course for uni-
versity graduates proceeding directly into teach-
ing upon graduation will be offered during the
summer of 1968.
In spite of the many advantages which these
summer courses had, they have not been with-
out their undersirable features. The period of
training has been too short, and because classes
of studenrs were not available in the secondary
schools during the summer period, there was in -

adequate opportunity to practise teaching in
actual classroom conditions. The problems in-
volved have been studied fully by officials of the
Department of Education, the staffs of the col-
leges of education, professional organizations,
etc.
As a result of this study and of the possible
alternatives it has been decided that the last
:initial summer course for university graduates
proceeding directly into the teaching profes-
sion after graduation will be offered, as stated
above, during the summer of 1968. The second
summer course for these students will be of-
fered for the last time the follow! ig summer.
Students who graduate from university in the
spring of 1969 and thereafter will be required
to take the year - long program at a college
of education to qualify for teaching. An appro-
priate program will continue, for a period of
time, to be offered during the summer for uni-
versity graduates who have had, after gradua-
tion, five or more years experience in another
profession or position and who decide that they
wish to qualify as teachers.

The residents have
